Wanton Noodles Cry Dec 28, 2014
Categories : Cantonese/Hong Kong | Food Court | Roasted Meat

There was always a queue at this Hong Kong Roasted Meat stall, maybe their stall was located right at the front of the foodcourt.

I ordered the Wanton Mee Dry at $4.50. The bowl was big but the serving portion was smaller than expected.

The Wanton Mee however was not as good tasting as its looks. The mee kia was springy and properly cook. Their Wanton Mee sauce looked dark but tasted more like dark soya sauce. The Char Siew looked roasted with malt but the meat was quite bland and lean. The Wantons were quite small and had little meat, I tasted more of the Wanton skin than the meat.

Overall, this Wanton Mee was not to my liking. I would still prefer the other Wanton in the vicinity such as Eng Kee in Yuhua Hawker Centre which was also cheaper and bigger serviing portion.

Spending per head: Approximately $4.50(Lunch)

6pc Classic Wings Set Cry Dec 26, 2014

Hearing how popular was Wingstop and its unique Fried Chicken, I went to Bedok to have a try. The Wingstop decor looked like a normal fastfood, the queue was short.

I ordered the Teriyaki 6pc Classic Wings Set at $9.90, it came with a drink and 2 sides. The wait for the food to be ready was quite long, about 15 minutes. To my surprise, the 6 pieces Chicken Wings set was not 6 whole chicken wings but was break into 3 winglets and 3 drumlets. The size of winglets and drumlets was also quite small.

The chicken wings smelt very nice with rich teriyaki sauce. The chicken wings were hot and crispy on the outside, but there was little meat. The teriyaki sauce was sweet and salty with a bit of caramel. However, I found that the taste of the teriyaki sauce was too salty.

Overall, Wingstop Chicken Wings was not to my liking as the marinate sauce was too salty and the size of the wings were too small.

My friend was late and I was tired standing under the hot weather in Bugis Junction. Hence, I went to Starbucks to get a iced blend drink. I did not want to order coffee, hence I ordered the Mango Passion Fruit Frappuccino Blended Juice, venti size. The cost was about $7.50.

The wait for my ordered drink was quite fast and the friendly staff called my name when my order was ready. The decor inside the Starbucks was cosy and comfortable, the air temperature was also cooling, good for resting my tired legs.

The taste of the Mango Passion Fruit Frappuccino Blended Juice was disappointing. It was also very sweet. There was no real mango or passion fruit in the drink. The taste was more of concentrated mango syrup with blended ice. I could not taste any passion fruit flavour, maybe the staff had forgotten to add the syrup in. Nevertheless, the drink was thirst quenching in this hot weather.

Overall, I felt that having paid $7.50 for a juice drink, I should be getting a real fruit blend instead of syrup water.

Spending per head: Approximately $7.50(Tea)

There was a famous stall in Pasar Bella selling roast meat which used premium pork. I had ordered the mixed platter which contained their famous Honey Pork Roast & Crackling Pork Roast. The cost was not cheap, more than $10 for a small takeaway box.

When I opened the box, there was mild roasted meat aroma. However, the taste was otherwise.

The Crackling Pork Roast did not have the similar savoury taste of Cantonese roast meat. Instead it was quite bland and dry. The skin was chewy and not crispy, maybe I buy takeaway and the meat had became cold.

The Honey Pork Roast also did not have the similar sweet malty taste of Cantonese roast meat. The meat was bland, lean and dry.

There was a brown sauce given, according to them it was apple sauce and it tasted sourish like vinegar. The brown sauce was good for dipping the bland roasted meat to enhance the palate.

Overall, I would still prefer roasted meat from the local hawker centre.

Spending per head: Approximately $15(Dinner)

Mixed Seafood Paella Cry Dec 25, 2014

I saw a lot of bloggers raved about this Mixed Seafood Paella at Pasar Bella. Hence, when I was there, I decided to have a try. The environment was dim and cosy there, the staffs were also friendly introducing their food fares.

I ordered the Mixed Seafood Paella. The cost was $13.50, quite pricey for a takeaway meal. When I opened the takeaway box, I could smell the fishy aroma of seafood and lemony scent.

The taste of this Mixed Seafood Paella was quite disappointing. Although the rice looked yellowish and shiny, it was actually soggy and tasteless. The seafood seem to have been stay on the cooking pan for too long, it was over-cooked and too chewy to be eaten. The whole Mixed Seafood Paella meal tasted quite bland and smell fishy, it was not to my liking.

Hopefully next time they could have replaced the seafood with meat such as chicken or pork to bring out the sweetness to the rice.
