Otak Otak Smile Dec 26, 2014

I was shopping at Westgate and walked around the basement food hall. I could smell the nice aroma of grilling Otak Otak. I walk round and round the food hall and was confused which stall was selling the Otak Otak. I followed the smell and saw the  menu board that 328 Laksa stall was selling it.

I was a bit sceptical whether a Laksa stall can make good Otak Otak. Nevertheless the grilling of Otak Otak aroma was tempting and I bought 2 pieces at $1.10 each.

The Otak Otak was wrapped in banana leaves and the size was quite large. The Otak Otak meat inside was also quite large. The taste of the Otak Otak was very good, very spicy, very moist and there were real fish meat.

Next time I am going to buy this Otak Otak to eat with Gardenia bread and lettuce at home!

Spending per head: Approximately $1.10(Tea)

Chwee Kueh OK Dec 25, 2014
Categories : Hawker Centre

While I was in Chong Pang Hawker Centre, I saw a chwee kueh stall selling at very affordable prices, only 8 pieces for $2.

The chwee kueh was quite oily, it was dripping with oil. The kueh tasted very good, with right amount of springiness and almost melted in mouth without the need to bite with teeth.

However, the cai poh was disappointing. The cai poh was sweet and seem like it had not been braised enough to achieve the kind of savoury as the famous Tiong Bahru Chwee Kueh.

But overall, the chwee kueh was good consider the cheap selling price.

Spending per head: Approximately $2(Breakfast)

Vegetarian Bee Hoon OK Dec 25, 2014

Categories : Hawker Centre | Vegetarian | Noodles

I was in Chom Pang Hawker Centre in the morning and I want to have some vegetarian meals. There were 2 stalls selling vegetarian meals, hence I had chosen this stall with a longer queue.

I had ordered a plate of Vegetarian Bee Hoon and it cost only $2.

The Vegetarian Bee Hoon came without any braised gravy. Hence when eating the beehoon, it was quite dry, eventhough the beehoon was nicely fried with "Wok Hei". There was generous ingredients but not much of varieties as compared to other Vegetarian Bee Hoon stalls.

The mocked meat tasted almost similar, only the colour looked difference. The fried beancurd skin was very crispy and good to eat alone as a snack. I do hope they sell this fried beancurd skin separately so that I could eat as a snack.

Overall, the Vegetarian Bee Hoon was very affordable. I do hope they could have gravy for the beehoon.

Spending per head: Approximately $2(Breakfast)

There was a famous stall in Pasar Bella selling roast meat which used premium pork. I had ordered the mixed platter which contained their famous Honey Pork Roast & Crackling Pork Roast. The cost was not cheap, more than $10 for a small takeaway box.

When I opened the box, there was mild roasted meat aroma. However, the taste was otherwise.

The Crackling Pork Roast did not have the similar savoury taste of Cantonese roast meat. Instead it was quite bland and dry. The skin was chewy and not crispy, maybe I buy takeaway and the meat had became cold.

The Honey Pork Roast also did not have the similar sweet malty taste of Cantonese roast meat. The meat was bland, lean and dry.

There was a brown sauce given, according to them it was apple sauce and it tasted sourish like vinegar. The brown sauce was good for dipping the bland roasted meat to enhance the palate.

Overall, I would still prefer roasted meat from the local hawker centre.

Spending per head: Approximately $15(Dinner)

Mixed Seafood Paella Cry Dec 25, 2014

I saw a lot of bloggers raved about this Mixed Seafood Paella at Pasar Bella. Hence, when I was there, I decided to have a try. The environment was dim and cosy there, the staffs were also friendly introducing their food fares.

I ordered the Mixed Seafood Paella. The cost was $13.50, quite pricey for a takeaway meal. When I opened the takeaway box, I could smell the fishy aroma of seafood and lemony scent.

The taste of this Mixed Seafood Paella was quite disappointing. Although the rice looked yellowish and shiny, it was actually soggy and tasteless. The seafood seem to have been stay on the cooking pan for too long, it was over-cooked and too chewy to be eaten. The whole Mixed Seafood Paella meal tasted quite bland and smell fishy, it was not to my liking.

Hopefully next time they could have replaced the seafood with meat such as chicken or pork to bring out the sweetness to the rice.
