Prawn Noodles Smile Dec 24, 2014

My friend recommended me this Prawn Noodles stall at Ang Mo Kio. From my friend, I heard that this stall orginated from Tampines before moving to Serangoon and finally settled down at Mayflower Food Centre.

There was a long queue during Lunch hours and the menu prices looked afforadable.

I ordered Prawns Bee Hoon Soup at $2.50. The stall holder was quite slow in preparing the dish. I waited 20 minutes in the queue of just 5 people infront.

The Prawns Bee Hoon came in piping hot. At $2.50 price, there was 3 medium prawns, kang kong, few slices fish cake and pork slices.

The Prawns Bee Hoon soup tasted very good, with heavy pork ribs soup taste instead of prawn shells. The  prawns tasted fresh and springy, not powdery like other stalls. The pork slices tasted sweet, I guess they were used in making the soup. However, the fish cake tasted bland and too springy.

Overall, I felt that the Prawns Bee Hoon tasted very good at this price, the serving size was good.

Spending per head: Approximately $2.50(Lunch)

Wanton Mee Smile Dec 24, 2014

I had saw Straits Times reviewing about this Wanton Mee stall. When I was in Buona Vista, I went to have a try.

During Lunch hour, there was not much queue, I ordered their signature $3 Dry Wanton Mee. From the appearance, the wanton mee had generous roasted char siew and a bowl of wantons.

The Wanton Mee's noodles tasted very good, it was springy and smooth to eat, I could taste the lard oil. The gravy for the dry version was good with sweetness of char siew sauce.

Their roasted char siew was very good, with good amount of malt and sweetness on the outer layer. The meat was tender and not fatty.

The wantons were a bit small but nevertheless it was good. The skin tasted a bit slimy and the meat was marinated with crushed dried fried fish.

Overall, this Wanton Mee tasted very good with acceptable portion at this pricing.

Spending per head: Approximately $3(Lunch)

Mushroom & Vegetable Bun OK Dec 24, 2014

Clementi seems to be a bakery hub, there was another new bakery opened within walking distance from Baker's Talent stall.

This Hong Kong bakery stall was specialised in Hong Kong style bread. The prices of buns also cost more than Baker's Talent, maybe their ingredients were imported from Hong Kong.

I had bought the mushroom and vegetable bun. This bun cost $1.30. The bun was big but the filling was not generous.

The texture of the bun was somewhat stiff, not as fluffy as Baker's Talent ones. The taste of filling was surprising good with peppery mushroom, red carrots and jicama, similar to popiah fillings, just a bit drier.

Overall, I would still prefer the buns from Baker's Talent which are cheaper and fluffier.

Curry Rice OK Dec 24, 2014

After shopping at Bugis area, I decided to have Lunch at kopitiam instead of expensive restaurant in the malls. I chanced upon this kopitiam whereby almost every stalls having a long queue. I decided to queue at this traditional looking Hainanese Curry Rice stall. The queue time was not long, about 15 minutes.

I ordered the Curry Rice set and added the braised pork. The total cost was $4. the serving was quite big at this price.

The amount of curry gravy on the rice was over-whelming. The curry rice had a nice curry aroma. The curry gravy did not taste spicy, but more of savory curry. The curry gravy was good to eat with rice and the meat together.

The braised pork was good, it was braised until the meat absorbed the herbal gravy.

The fried pork fillet was a bit disappointing. The meat fillet was very thin and I could not taste the pork meat, I thought it was flour instead.

The fried cabbage was disappointing, it was over-cooked and mashy.

Wanton Mee OK Dec 24, 2014

During morning hours, there was a long queue at this Wanton Mee stall in Clementi West Food Centre. Hence, I decided to join in the queue. The aunty manning the stall was slightly slow in serving and preparing the Wanton Mee.

I ordered the Dry Wanton Mee at $2.50. The serving was quite worth with the number of Wantons and slices of Char Siew.

The Wanton Mee was somewhat disappointing. The noodles seem to be over-cooked, the texture was soggy and tasted floury. It seem that there was no special sauce for dry version, just diluted soya sauce.

Though the noodle was not good, the wantons were good. Big and meaty of the wantons. The Char Siew was average, handmade and not the roasted type.
