Bak Chor Mee Pok  Smile Dec 26, 2014

This Bak Chor Mee stall was featured in Channel 8 “Just Noodles 面对面”. Hence, there was a long queue during Lunch time. The queue time was about 20 minutes.

Initally I wanted to order their famous curry noodle, but when it was my turn to order, they had just soldout, hence I ordered the Bak Chor Mee Pok.

At $3, the Bak Chor Mee Pok had generous portion of meat and pork liver. I had noticed that this Bak Chor Mee stall used button mushroom instead of Shitake mushroom.

This Bak Chor Mee tasted good. The mee pok was springy and cooked just right. There was right amount of pok lard oil in the mee pok that made it silky smooth when eating. The minced meat tasted soft and tender, I guessed that they had marinated the meat before.

Spending per head: Approximately $3(Lunch)

Mee Rebus Smile Dec 25, 2014

This Malay stall at Yuhua Hawker Centre always soldout before Lunch hours. Today, I reached the hawker centre early and decided to have a try on their food. According to their signboard, they used healthier choice ingredients for their dishes.

I ordered the Mee Rebus at $2.50. The stall lady was very friendly, asking me whether I need more celery or beanspourt for my Mee Rebus.

The Mee Rebus looked not only smell good but also tasted good. The gravy was thick and flavourful, I could taste the fermented soya beans in the gravy. The gravy was not too spicy, just right. There was also a lot of shallots added which add to the overall taste of the Mee Rebus.

Overall, although I was not sure which healthier choice ingredients they used but the Mee Rebus sure tasted good.

Spending per head: Approximately $2.50(Breakfast)

Prawn Noodles Smile Dec 24, 2014

My friend recommended me this Prawn Noodles stall at Ang Mo Kio. From my friend, I heard that this stall orginated from Tampines before moving to Serangoon and finally settled down at Mayflower Food Centre.

There was a long queue during Lunch hours and the menu prices looked afforadable.

I ordered Prawns Bee Hoon Soup at $2.50. The stall holder was quite slow in preparing the dish. I waited 20 minutes in the queue of just 5 people infront.

The Prawns Bee Hoon came in piping hot. At $2.50 price, there was 3 medium prawns, kang kong, few slices fish cake and pork slices.

The Prawns Bee Hoon soup tasted very good, with heavy pork ribs soup taste instead of prawn shells. The  prawns tasted fresh and springy, not powdery like other stalls. The pork slices tasted sweet, I guess they were used in making the soup. However, the fish cake tasted bland and too springy.

Overall, I felt that the Prawns Bee Hoon tasted very good at this price, the serving size was good.

Spending per head: Approximately $2.50(Lunch)

Coffee Smile Dec 26, 2013

While waiting for my friend at Yew Tee Mrt, I went to nearby 1983 Cafe to have some drinks. The cafe was air condition. Since it was drizzling, I ordered a cup of hot coffee. The cup of coffee in this cafe was surprising cheap at $1.

The cup of coffee was piping hot, I had to use the spoon to drink sip by sip. The coffee had nice arabica aroma. The taste was also rich in arabica beans with no sourish aftertaste. The sweetness and creaminess of the coffee were also just right. I think the local staff was quite experience in making a good cup of coffee.

Overall, I was very surpised that this 1983 cafe sells good coffee at neighbourhood kopitiam prices.

Waygu Beef Croquette Smile Dec 26, 2013

There was some Japanese Food Kiosk inside the Isetan Supermarket. One of them was J Dining, which sells deep fried Japanese Food.

There was one item which caught my eyes, that was Waygu beef Croquette and it just cost $2.80! Hence, I bought one to try.

The Waygu Beef Croquette had a very crispy breaded outer layer. The crispy and fluffy texture of the breaded layer was similar to Tonkichi Restaurant. Inside the croquette was quite disappointing, there was much more potato then minced beef. However, the croquette tasted good. The potato was smooth and not powdery. There was some flavour of beef meat, but I was not sure was it waygu beef, as it tasted like just normal beef meat.

Overall, the Waygu Beef Croquette tasted good, though I was not sure whether there was any real Waygu Beef at this affordable price tag.
