Disappointing Charly Cry Jun 13, 2013
Categories : Restaurant | Steaks and Grills

As an avid globetrotter and food enthusiast, the owner nicknamed none other than Charly, embarked on an adventurous journey across the continents while gathering innovative food ideas and concepts. Located at NOMU and the recent opening of PasarBella (Turf Club)'s and I12 Katong's outlets, Charly T's is yet, a medium to share his inspiration to the masses through food.

It was a last minute decision to have our dinner at Charly T's, as the Groupon voucher that I bought ages ago expired on that day. I was quite reluctant as it was nowhere near my place, however the journey time from Dhoby Ghaut to Charly T's is no more than a 5-minute stroll. Thank God, I didn't really want to waste the $40 worth of vouchers anyway.

Since Rotisserie Chicken was marked as their speciality, we decided to try out a quarter (S$14.50) which comes together with 2 side dishes. Having eaten the roasted chicken, I can't understand what's the hype about. There was no doubt that the marination was done pretty well and the faint charred taste was a plus, however considering that it was the breast area I had, it was still dry and ain't juicy at all. For the sides, our choices were steamed vegetables and mac-and-cheese, both which hardly passes the mark as well.

Cordon Bleu Chicken (S$14) barely hit the spot too, but it's definitely better than the rotisserie chicken. The breast meat this time round was not oily, yet tender and fairly juicy with the usual ham and cheese, encased in a crispy crust of bread crumbs. Lovely, just that the cheese was too bland and runny for my liking. Thick cut potato chips was good, much better than the ones in MacDonalds or Kenny Rogers.

I don't even know why Kaiserschmarrn (S$16) became our dessert, but I figured out its because of the unique name that we don't even understand. And so it came, light and fluffy pancake, and showered with icing sugar and raisins, accompanied by home-made vanilla ice cream. Although the menu itself describes this Austrian-German dessert as "****-ed up pancakes…good for 2!", portion-wise, yes it's good, but as a whole, I wouldn't say I was that accustomed to the particular moist, eggy-banana flavour. BUT! The homemade ice cream was awesome. It was one of the best I've ever had. It comes at S$4 per scoop if you want another serving of heaven.

In a nutshell, Charly T serves decent Western affair (well, mostly), but it's not that worth it, if without vouchers. Oh well, at least I know what's Kaiserschmarrn now. Do you?

Spending per head: Approximately $20(Dinner)

Lovely Aftermeal Dessert Smile Jun 13, 2013

Categories : Hawker Centre | Desserts and Cakes

What's a good meal without desserts? More often than not, when I am around Clementi central for a dinner, Lao Ban is always the "after meal place" that I head to for desserts. You see, the only place months ago to have Lao Ban is Old Changi Road, but after new outlets emerged all over the city, Lao Ban Soya Beancurd is much easier to get.

Different from the traditional soya beancurd (where they serve with sugar syrup), newer renditions like Lao Ban's served it pre-mixed, and using a special recipe to ensure that their soya beancurd is smooth and silky, so much you probably just put it in your mouth and swallow.

All in all, Lao Ban proves to be a more favourable choice for the younger crowds in Singapore.

Great Taiwanese Dishes OK Jun 13, 2013
Categories : Taiwanese | Chinese | Restaurant | Noodles | Rice

Managed by The Asian Kitchen group, Lu Gang Xiao Zhen offers a great variety of Taiwanese dishes such as their famous Eggy Rice dish, Herbal Guitar Duck and Stir fried Four Seasons Beans with Salt Egg Yolk.

Guitar Duck, otherwise known as roasted duck is one of their specialities. With tender and succulent beneath a thin crisp layer of duck skin, it is no wonder that this is a star dish. The only minus point is probably the excessive oil, other than that - best roasted duck.

Starchy rice cake is served on the dinner table, especially on special occasions in Taiwan. It was one of our anniversaries, and we decided to order this. Nothing "wow-inducing", but it's good to try. Other recommended dishes are Glutinous Rice wrapped in Lotus leaf and Pork Belly.

Awesome, Overpriced Seafood Smile Jun 13, 2013

With the scenic Singapore River and Marina Bay as a backdrop, Esplanade is a beautiful place to chill and relax with the company of your loved ones, and good food. Now, as you all know, good food around the city area doesn't come cheap, especially if the place is known as a "tourist trap".

Nevertheless, we were around the vicinity recently and decided to try out their sambal sting-ray based on one friend's recommendation. Surprisingly, the portion was quite good and the soft fleshy sting-ray meat paired by sambal belachan was just delicious.

Defintiely a must try.

Decent Seafood Meal OK Jun 13, 2013

Categories : Restaurant

When you thought of having casual seafood meals, the first few restaurants that came to mind are probably Fish & Co, Manhattan Fish Market and Jack's Place. Little did we know that a place by the name of Hooked! was hiding amidst the transquility of the western Rail Mall.

Months back, a few friends and I took the opportunity to meet up for dinner after a short photoshoot at the dysfunct railway tracks. We had the Pasta al Funghi, which comes in a savoury, creamy sauce and calms . Portion was huge enough for two girls to share, while the pasta itself was not cooked al dente, was a minus point.

Similar to Fish & Co's seafood platter, their rendition which was served with garlic prawns, squid rings, mussels along with spiced rice was rather limited. I wouldn't say it's even sharable for a grown man.

All in all, Hooked! is worth going for a decent seafood meal if there are promotions going on, and if you're around the vicinity, as it proves to be an unconvenient location.
