Hwang Sil Korean Chinese Restaurant is no stranger to people working in tanjong pagar area. It serves many authentic and nice Korean/Chinese foods. It can be easily spotted with long queue during lunch peak hours.

The restaurant is located at Airview Building which is next to the Red Dot Traffic Museum. The oriental decoration of Hwang Sil brings you back “Shanghai”.

They served a series of ala carte dishes and set meals for large group. Each set no.1 comprising of Tang Su Yuk (Sweet and Sour Pork), fried Dumpling (8 pieces) and a choice of Jumbo Size JJa Jang Myeon Black Soy Bean Paste noodle) or Jumbo Size Jjam Bong (Spicy Seafood Noodles Soup). Since there are 6 of us, and the waitress recommend that the jumbo size was meant for 2 pax, we orders 2 set of set no.1 ($55) (1 jumbo size JJa Jang Myeon & 1 jumbo size JJam Bong) & ala carte size for JJa Jang Myeon & JJam Bong. Noodles overdosed. I have enclosed herewith the menu from Hwang Sil restaurant for easy reference of the food dishes available. Photo Credit: Hwang sil.JJampong (海鲜拉面) make up of chewy smooth noodles, seafood, vegetables and meat in a spicy soup. It was one of the popular Korean-Chinese dish enjoyed by people over the world, thus you can easily find it in almost every Korean-Chinese restaurant.

The use of the natural ingredients and chilli creates a hearty bowl of soup that is packed with robust flavors. The spiciness “shiok” us with the taste. Most of us find it too spicy. But one of my friend disagree as she stated that it was “spicy yet too addictive for you to stop”. The fresh and generous amount of mussels satisfied her greatly.

Jja Jang Myeon, is the most popular food in Korean Chinese cuisine. It is makes from topping the noodle with thick soy bean paste (chunjang) together with ingredient such
as diced pork, vegetable and maybe seafood. Jja Jang litering means fried sauce
in Chinese. To be honest, I have never been a fan of Jja jang Myeon as those I tried in the past have a overpowering oil smell.

This Jja Jang Myeon in Hwang sil surprised me with its taste. The sauce was sweet and the texture was just right. It was not too thick, so diners will be easily sick of the taste after a while. The noodles were chewy and smooth as well. It was really addictive that we kept eating it, bowl after bowl.

The jumbo sized.

The ala carte size

Fried Dumpling was inclusive in set no.1 . It was pan-fried before serving. The sides were very crispy like biscuit. Within it, you can find meat, glass noodles and some spring onion inside.

Another of our hot favourite is the Tang Su Yuk (Sweet Sour Pork). The pork cubes where dipped with a layer of flour before being dipped fried. It was then topped with a sweet and sour sauce. The Tang Su Yuk was crispy as though it was popcorn chicken. The sweet-sour taste helps to tickle our taste bud and enhanced our appetite.

Regular
Size Tang Su Yuk - $38

All in all, it is worth coming for the Korean-Chinese dish in Hwang sil. It is recommended to call to make reservation in case it can be very crowded after working hours too.

Nothing beats having the traditional local style big breakfast to kick starts your day. Good old traditional coffee, soft boiled eggs, thick kaya toast and French toast is what Tong Ah Eating House has been famous for.

This old-school coffee shop has shifted from its symbolic red white three storeys building to a new shophouse which is a few doors down the same road. Tong ah has been operating its business since 1939.

Right outside the coffee shop, there are only about two or three tables outside where you can slowly sip your kopi and munch on kaya toast. The rest of the seats are located inside the shop where it is supposed to be air-conditioned. But during our visit, it the air-con was down. Diners can choose to sit indoor or outdoor to enjoy their meal. Usually, the outdoor
eating is more popular as it is more cooling and carries a greater traditional vibe. Tong Ah also serves cze char dishes at the later part of the day. Aside from the traditional kopi which you can order to accompany the toast, the tea here is also very fragrant. The boss has been using Sri Lankan tea from the same supplier for decades and he makes a special effort to age the tea so as to develop greater flavour.

My favourite item is French toast with kaya. Slices of bread were dipped into the egg mixture before grilling it. It was really fragrant. The egg covering was slightly crispy and soft in the inner. With the butter being placed on top of the toast, the heat from the bread melts it naturally. The kaya further value-add this dish. Unlikely the usual, it was not sweet and has a very thick texture (lumpy).

White soft bread was steamed and sandwiched with butter and kaya mixture. It was really soft and “chewy”.

Kaya and butter melting within

A traditional style
breakfast is never complete without soft-boiled eggs with runny yolk as a side, and usually served with a dash of white pepper and dark soy sauce.

Bf was in the mood for a heavy breakfast, so he also orders the traditional nasi lemak which is packed in the wrapped in pandan leaf in a triangle shaped packet.

Within the pack, it consists of hot spicy sauce (sambal chilli), malay fragrant rice dish cooked in coconut milk, small anchovies (ikan bilis) and a small fried fish.

For a taste of delight early in the morning, why not dropped by to have a try and immerse yourself in the traditional style coffeeshop.

Vegetarian diet is gaining in popularity on our home - Singapore. Whether your reasons for seeking out vegetarian cuisines have something to do with religion or because you want to go on a greener diet, Liu He Vegetarian Food can be one of your considerations as it provides quality vegetarian food at a low cost.

Vegetarian food does not necessary refers to only vegetable. It can have more varieties and style.

Wu Xiang With Salad Cream:The outer coating was very crispy.. Within it, the filling was made of soya powder to create the soft tender “meat” texture. Upon order, the owner will
start preparing the wu xiang from scrap. So it will take a while for this dish to be served.

But the amazing taste makes the wait worth. Carrots were blended together with mushroom and soya powder mixture to create the filling.

White Restaurant is modern cze char restaurant located in Sembawang, serving delicious white bee hoon. You can easily spot long queue snaking round the restaurants during weekend and dinner hours. The wait is well worth for the white bee hoon was really delicious.

You can easily spot the restaurants as it is located opposite sembawang shopping center. Recently, it has gone through some renovation, providing diners with more comfort which indulging in their delights.

It has been come spacious and brighter.

Sembawang White Bee Hoon has set foot at Sembawang in 2010, serving moist and slimy seafood white bee hoon. The bee hoon stirred fried with egg, was really fragrant. This simple looking dish consisting of white bee hoon, sotong, prawns and vegetables has won many of the diners’ hearts and tummy.

Meat & Seafood Roll (虾枣) is another recommended and popular dish that almost every table has a plate of this on their table. Minced meat and prawn was wrapped with beancurd skin and deep skin. Love how the roll was so fresh and meaty (a lot of filling).

Meat & Seafood Roll (虾枣) , Small - $10

Indo-Style Fried Chicken Wing was really crispy and the meat was tender. However, the taste and smell of turmeric was too strong for my liking.

Chin Mee Chin Confectionery, an old school coffeeshop located at 204 East Coast Road, has draws crowd of people to come and enjoy traditional breakfast. It is popular for its kaya toast.

We may be very used to going to hipster cafes, why not take a break to enjoy some nostalgia at this old school place. Sipping kopi /tea while enjoying nostalgic atmosphere brings you a trip down memory lane to see coffee shop in the past looks like and feel like.

Beside the traditional toast, there are also cakes, donuts and tarts being sold. They may not be fanciful looking, but they definitely one of those that are “old-school”. These cakes, donuts and tarts are being placed in the shelves where you can help yourself to your plate and pay at the counter.

It has been years since the last time I eat a sugar coated donuts. I’m amazed with how soft the donut was and what a perfect match the sugar was with the donut. It was most of the most fast selling item in the shelves as in less than an hour stay there; the whole tray of donut was completely wiped out. Patrons even started asking if there is more.

Donut ($1.20)

Unlike the usual toast, Chin Mee Chin uses fluffy buns instead of slices of bread. This fluffy buns were toasted, thus the buns were crispy on the outer, soft and fluffy in the inner. Generous serving of kaya were spread on the buns with a slice of butter given to be shared between two halves.

One bun (two halves) for $1

The taste of the cream puff surprised me. I was expecting the butter cream puff to be sweet but to my surprise, it was slightly salty. They also offer the chocolate version of the cream puff where a layer of chocolate ganache was apply to the cream puff.

The custard tart was quite decent as the custard was not overly sweet and the tart was crisp, lightly sweet, and buttery.

As for the chocolate muffin, I find it too dry and chocolate ganache was limited.

Cream Puff, Chocolate Cream Puff, Custard Tart, Chocolate Muffin ($1 each)

Really love the coffee as it was thick and the natural fragrant of milk from the condensed milk further value-add the taste, making it really smooth and addictive.

Chin Mee Chin Confectionery may not be the best place to visit for its cakes and tart, but I believe the high quality thick coffee and soft, fluffy kaya butter buns worth definitely satisfied you. What’s more, a nostalgias environment for a walk downs the memory lane.
