Below average ramen Cry Jul 07, 2014

Categories : Japanese | Ramen

Tried the following for my family of 4 :

Black Duck Set $16.90

Salmon Rice Set $14.90

Special White Set $14.90

White Cha Set $15.90

Read reviews about the broth, with descriptions like 'creamy ... thick ... rich ...". So I have been wanting to try it; however, I must say that I am disappointed. Broth is diluted & oily. None of the robustness that should come come hours of boiling pork bones, except the oil. The noodle is springy & a little hard. The broth makes or breaks a good ramen. I'll not be back again.

my 1st & last visit Cry Jun 19, 2014

Kyo by Sakae took over the unit previously occupied by Capricciosa. The place is so nicely done up & looked so inviting, so I was there this evening for dinner with my 2 kids.

These were what we ordered:

1. Dragon Maki ($7.99): This is a soft shell prawn maki with avocado slices. Passable, though tail end of the prawn was not crispy at all.

2. Unagi Maki ($8.99): Was taken aback when this was presented - it looked so scrawny compared to the ones in the menu. While the unagi was dry, there was some interesting crispy bits inside.

3. Sakae Ju ($13.99): This is a chirashi with various salmon types - sashimi, mayo, chilli. The spicy one was really fiery hot, not for anyone's palate. Again, they have to scrimp on the rice - it was a thin layer, perhaps about 1cm in depth. So those with an average appetite will not find this filling.

4. Salmon Teriyaki ($18.99): This is a bento set of Salmon teriyaki + tempura. The sweet potato tempura was oily, with discernible oil glistening. Accompanying tempura sauce not served, staff had to be told to bring ti table. While the picture showed rice in a separate bowl, the rice here was served in the same tray. Looked like poor quality white rice, as it does not look like japonica rice, as it was elogated & not sticky.

5. Salmon Sashimi ($6.99): This is so-so.

6. FOC Red Plate Sushi: I was entitled to 1 complimentary red dish for joining as a member. Watched the conveyor belt went a few times, before I finally picked up a inarizuchi filled with mayo & whatever that was the filling. Very poor quality red plate items with no premium items at all.

Although the restaurant was not even 1/2 filled, the service was slow.
After going through the menu & having decided on the orders, there was no wait staff in sight. I looked around and waited for quite a while before I got up & went to the cashier counter. Waited there for awhile before a staff in yellow T-shirt appeared, & followed me to my table to take my orders. They also took very long to serve the drinks. As a newly initiated member who is entitled to complimentary green tea, this was not served until I requested for it. The food took so long to arrive. We waited for 40 mins before the makis were served, then another wait of 5 or more mins for the Sakae Ju, followed by another 10 mins for the Salmon Teriyaki Bento. When I finished my hot green tea, I lifted my cup to signal to the wait staff to top up with hot water. The staff came over with a jug of cold green tea. Surely he can tell that mine is hot, as it was in a cup? Finally, after 1 1/2 hours in the restaurant, of which 90% of the time was waiting for food arrivals, it is time to settle the bill. Cashier was not in sight. Staff in yellow Ts cannot do cashiering duty. Waited a while for the manager, who was in the kitchen to attend to us.

The total bill for 1 adult & 2 kids amounted to $66.92. We were not exactly full, given the miserly portions. We are better off going to Watami which is some units away, serving better quality food.
