Worth a Visit OK Jun 19, 2014

Categories : Japanese | Restaurant | Sushi/Sashimi

I last visited Kuru Kuru a couple of years ago. As there is a recent Groupon deal, I searched for latest reviews to see if the restaurant is worth a re-visit before I make the purchase.
Was very apprehensive with some recent poor reviews of the place. Nonetheless, decided to check out the restaurant yesterday.
I am happy to say that my apprehension dissipated when the 1st 2 dishes arrived, which were sashimi (salmon, yellowtail & swordfish) & pork cutlet. The former was cold & fresh. The latter, though thin, was decent.
The rest of the dishes (makis, various sushi, shishamo, ebi tempura, chicken wings, gyoza, garlic fried rice ) were OK.
My only gripes were :
Salmon teriyaki/ Salmon in butter sauce - very small pieces for each diner. Some were moist, others overdone & dry.
Chawanmushi - bland
Grilled Saba - skin was nicely grilled, but again, dry.
Sakura dumpling - this is a dried hard mess that I had to spit out. The dorayaki is a better choice than the dumplings
Ice cream - all ok ecept the vanilla, which has strong artificial taste
Salmon roe sushi - overly salty & not so fresh.
Service
Nothing I can fault with. They brought pots )for hot ocha) & jugs (of drinks) so that you can re-fill yourself.
One of the wait staff (I think a male Filipino) even wished my husband 'Happy Father's Day'. Well, it was just a lunch, not a special celebration. Gesture appreciated, though.
So, this place is still worth a visit.

Tasty pizza OK Sep 16, 2014

Sarpino is a chain of pizza restaurants with outlets islandwide. They usually have promotions, eg 50% off, for take aways.

Ordered a takeaway Hawaiian and a BBQ Chicken pizza. Both were the thick crusted type and quite tasty. However, bbq sauce is a little of a overdose, making it a little too sweet.

Reasonably cheap at under $30 for 2 medium 12 inch pizzas.

Cheesecake & Tea OK Aug 02, 2014

Walked past, & decided to go in to have a cuppa & cake.

This is what I shared with my dau:

Matcha Gravity

Matcha Gravity

Matcha Gravity
True to it's name, this is a 3 layered latte comprising of latte & matcha tea. A little 'diluted' & not as rich as what some other joints serve.

Royal Chocolate Truffle

Royal Chocolate Truffle
A chocolate genoise sprinkled with crunchy praline feuiletine and roasted hazelnuts, this is for chocolate lovers.

New York Cheesecake

Rich but I find it a little dry. Prefer a creamier and fluffier texture.

Was there last week with my little girl, and ordered these for sharing as we were not very hungry :
Stir fried minced chicken with basil ($1190)
This is listed as 'Yummy' in the menu. It comes with rice & a fried egg. Portion of rice is small. Fried egg is very oily. The minced chicken, while tasty, is too salty (with sweetish tinge) due in part to the heavily sauced gravy.
Lemon Grass Prawn Cake ($9.90)
Deep fried item, average taste. Prawn not very discernable, probably because it was minced up as paste form.

Overall, food is average & over-priced.

Cuva cakes OK Jun 19, 2014
Categories : Bakery | Kids-Friendly

Got a pack of 6 cuva cakes from Chewy Junior, touted to be the best of best worlds - cupcakes + lava cake. They really look very pretty & inviting.

By the time I reached home, the cuva cakes were in a mess. I took one out to eat - cream frosting was too mushy, the lava doesn't flow. I can't possible warm the cuva cup up to make the lava flow, as this will ruin the cream frosting. The cake texture was ok, not too sweet.

Kept the rest in the fridge to chill. When chilled, cream frosting is firmer, but the rest of the cuva suffers - harder cupcake & lava.
