Best Chendol! Smile May 23, 2015

Categories : Hawker Centre | Desserts and Cakes

Looking at the prices of the desserts they offer. They are reasonably priced and with a huge variety of desserts!

They had 3 friendly staff all in uniform that churned out the desserts quickly. Hence there wasn't a line whereas the next door fish ball noodle had a snaking queue.

I read that the owner goes to Melaka to buy the Chendol jelly and I believe this. The colour of the jelly is a pale green compared to a bright green which is the normal colour of the Chendol jelly at most desserts. I'm guessing those are the factory produced Chendol jelly with more artificial colour ones.

The gula melaka in this dessert was also very fragrant and authentic! My parents who missed the good ole Chendol from Melaka will be back here on a routine basis now that we have found a hidden gem in the Toa payoh neighborhood!

Naomi Kitchen is located at the bus terminal HDB block, right next to Serangoon Nex.

It is more of a standalone shop and is very visible from the main road.

The second you walk in, you are greeted by the mesmerizing cake display. I visited on a friday evening and their business began to pick up around 730pm.

The seats and table are very clean and simplistic in terms of look and feel.

They also sell baked goods for you to take home and munch on whilst studying etc, they were all very cutely designed and packaged. I was tempted to grab a bunch of these and walk over to the cashier!

They also sell ice cream, waffles and even snow ice!! Quite a diverse menu of food offerings I must add.

1. Chocolate Rainbow Cake $6.50

This rainbow cake stands really tall in comparison to the rest of the competition! It was very moist and I enjoyed the chocolate cream. Each layer was the same thickness and taste. They also offer a fruity rainbow cake with real fruits in each layer! But for all chocolate lovers, I do recommend this rainbow cake!

2. Potted Tiramisu $5

The presentation is pleasing to the eyes and I really liked the potted plant idea. The top layers of the Tiramisu was rather dry, upsettingly, but as you "dug" deeper, and get to the ladyfingers, it was super wet with flavours rum and coffee. A tad too wet, it more of a flower pot, which had been "watered" too much. But nonetheless at $5, it was rather reasonably priced!

3. Matcha swiss roll with azuki bean $1.20

Probably the most anticipated food I wanted to try, but it was a bit dry and the green tea flavour wasn't strong enough, but again at this price point. I really can't complain too much. I would definitely be back to try more of their swiss rolls!!

For $14.10, I truly satisfied my sugar cravings for the night and I was very happy to chance upon this place! This place truly deserves more recognition, even though it is hidden in the Serangoon neighbourhood!

My friend also ordered a main, which took quite a while to get prepared. We had to remind the staff to get the food order into the microwave or oven, whatever prep device they needed to heat it up. We knew this because the minced meat was still stone cold.

Nonetheless, I would still hit up Naomi Kitchen for more desserts and maybe try their savoury waffles!

Fluffy and Sweet Soufflé! Smile Apr 13, 2015

Categories : Japanese | Café | Desserts and Cakes | Ramen

Located on the third floor extension of Plaza Singapura, is Hoshino Coffee, a popular Japanese chain of coffee shop. I wanted to try this so badly at Shibuya but time did not allow. So back here in Singapore, I decided to go all out and try it!! 7 soufflés ordered and here goes my personal soufflé buffet!!

Now that is supposedly Spring in Japan, even though my Japanese friends told me it snowed last week and it's currently 6 degrees celsius in Tokyo, the Spring menu for Hoshino coffee includes this super pretty pink  strawberry soufflé pancake!

"Gotta catch em all!"

1. Hoshino's Spring Pancake Soufflé $14.50++

So after the waitress took our 7 orders of soufflés, all the 4 pancakes arrived at all table all at once! The strawberry ice cream was very smooth, it wasn't too sweet but the syrup they provided us was very sweet indeed!

Use it sparingly over the soufflé, as it can drown out your taste buds and we had 6 more soufflés to try and we didn't want to kill our taste buds. The soufflé itself is alot harder than the normally fluffly soufflé. As it is a pancake, I would consider it more like a fluffier and slightly tougher version of a chiffon cake.

2. Pancake Soufflé with Chocolate Banana $13.50++

Lots of chocolate sauce going on here. When you order a pancake soufflé, you have an option of whipped cream of softee. We went with softee for all our pancake soufflés and we liked the softee. Japanese soft serves, you can never go wrong with them! The pancake soufflé don't have any fillings inside, unlike the hot vanilla soufflés.

3. Pancake Soufflé with Mango $13.50++

We decided to go easy on the syrup for this one, having tried the first Spring soufflé with syrup and the second one with alot of chocolate sauce. The softee itself isn't very sweet, as such you can taste the subtle sweetness of the soufflé pancake!

4. Pancake Soufflé with Matcha "Ogura" Bean Paste $13.50++

The most modest of the pancake soufflés, and my personal favourite. The matcha soft cream here tastes very similar to the one I tried at Tsujiri, it has a stronger bitter after taste than the typical sweet and sugar-ladden matcha ice cream. The bean paste is also very sweet, as such, be careful not to get a sugar-overdose trying to eat that on it's own!

5. Vanilla Soufflé with Chocolate/Custard/Matcha sauce $10.80++ each

All the vanilla soufflés arrived at our table just as we were done with the pancake soufflé!

You gotta pour the sauces into the soufflé and the soufflé was steaming hot as we sliced it open, and even as we dug in, each spoonful, you could still see it steaming!! It is a very hot dessert, and be careful not to burn your tongue!

Of the 3 sauces, my favourite was custard. It had the right amount of sweetness! The chocolate was abit too sweet for my liking and the green tea wasn't sweet at all!

and here's the bill for our exploration of 7 soufflés at Hoshino coffee!!

Service is pretty good here, there's a button for your to press and the waitress will come to you. The also provide you with a bag to put your things.

Bak Kut Teh (PEPPERY STYLE) Smile Mar 25, 2015
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Chinese Soup

Waited for about 15 minutes on a weekday night at 730pm, you get a ticket stub with a number on it, and a waitress will walk up to everyone along the line with an iPad to take orders. Hence, once you get seated, the food is immediately served to you!

The menu is handed to you whilst you queue up.

We ordered $30.25 worth of food for 2PAX, but it was way too much food! The braised intestines were some of the best I have ever had! The soup, though peppery wasn't too peppery, and just right for my taste. The pork ribs themselves were very tasty and I enjoyed them. Sadly the dough fritters weren't freshly fried and crispy, they were soft and doughy! The braised pig trotters was pretty good too, the meat fell right off the bones!

All in all, a great place to eat bak kut teh in an air-conditioned environment, no need to queue outside along clark quay!

200 happy and satisfied tummies! Smile Mar 07, 2015

Categories : Bakery

We needed to feed 200 people at an event and baker talent came to mind!

Start at just 60 cents to 90cents for a bun, they are freshly baked and as we found out, they take orders!

Ordered 200 buns from them and no deposit was required. They didn't ask for our contact and didn't contact us to confirm if we were coming to collect the buns. I guess they have good faith that we will turn up.

So we picked up all 200 freshly baked buns which made my car smell heavenly! If there was ever such a thing as a baker talent air freshener. This would be it!

1. Butter Boom 60cents

At just 60 cents this is their cheapest offering and it is a light fluffy bun with a buttery and slightly oily chewy filling. It's almost like biting into a hollow steamed pau.

Not much to see or nom on, but at 60 cents. It can feed the hungry and the masses!

2. Cranberry Cheese 90 cents

This has an actual filling inside the bun unlike the butter boom. A slight tinge of cream cheese and cranberries scattered across the exterior of the bun which makes this bun smell so delicious!

3. Golden sands bun 90 cents

This is their top seller and most well marketed bun, a Liu sha bun! With a buttery, salted egg filling and a sugared top of the bun, makes this everyone's favourite!
Look at it flow!

Look at it flow!

Look at the Liu sha! Kids and old folks can definitely still enjoy the fun in watching the viscosity of the fluid flow!

Everyone loved the buns and we had 200 well fed and happy people! Thanks to baker talent! $165 well spent!
