$1.30 Ice Kachang Smile Mar 07, 2015

Categories : Hawker Centre | Desserts and Cakes

Located at the edge of the second row of shops is this old school dessert shop run by two brothers.

At $1.30, it's still reasonably cheap price for an ice Kachang. Gone are the times where they sold this for a dollar but they are still generous with the ingredients.

At 35 degrees celcius on an average afternoon, this would be worth more to you than at just $1.30!

There are 3 atap seeds, lots of crunchy corns and big red beans and also pink jelly cubes. When the ice melts, you get an ice Kachang drink to Wah down all the cooling ingredients you had chow down on!

All in all, a great stall for refreshing cold or hot desserts, you won't think twice about ordering a dessert as their prices are all pretty low.

Halal Brunch Smile Mar 03, 2015
Categories : English | Café | Desserts and Cakes | Burgers and Sandwiches | Brunch

There's been an increased number of halal cafes popping up and Penny University has been around for the past 2 years. It's so common to see cafes popping up, but no one really knows when they close down. But Penny University is a survivor and I decided to go learn why.

It's not exactly close to any MRT station, so I took bus there and at 12pm, I was told to give my name and they said it would take at least 30 minutes for a table. I patiently waited and as other potential customers gave up waiting, my waiting time was reduced to a mere 15 minutes.

Their menu is printing in a old/washed out font and it makes it quite difficult to read, I struggled at first, but we still managed to order our food.

I read on their facebook and instagram that they now serve Fluff Bakery cupcakes, the cupcakes which I queued for an hour for! But at 12pm, the cupcakes hadn't arrived and when I left at almost 1:30pm, the cupcakes still hadn't reached. The boss himself had no clue when the cupcakes would arrive, even though I called at 830am to ask if there would be cupcakes.

Penny University is famed for their coffee, as such I decided to go with an affogato.

1. Affogato $7

When the affogato was served to me, the waiter explained that the center cup was the coffee and on the left, it was gula melaka. I was like. WOAH!

As you gently pour the coffee over the ice cream, it melts the ice cream into a silky, and creamy texture and with the gula melaka, the sweetness offsets the bitterness of the strong coffee. I felt awakened as I sipped the affogato. This is some strong stuff! I enjoyed it so much I will have to order it again soon!

2. The BLAT $9.50

The minced beef patty was pink in the center and was very juicy and soft. We enjoyed the sourdough toast which was very crispy and thick. The texture of the cheese was also very hard and I enjoyed the fresh tomatoes which tasted sweet.

3. English Breakfast $16 + $2.20 (smoked chicken)
I really enjoyed the poached eggs, and with sourdough toast. Definitely a more western style of soft boiled eggs with toast. Everything was pretty okay, but I did like the sausages, one was slightly spicy. The smoked chicken was slightly on the dry side, but it still tasted good.

Awesome cafes that sell baked goods, have baking classes so awesome coffee shops that sell coffee also have espresso workshops!

So after my brunch at Penny University, I feel that the key reason why Penny University is still around after 2 years it that their prices are on the reasonable side, and also because it's a halal cafe. I just wished that they would take reservations. Food wise, they're okay, and though not fantastic, with their prices.. I think they can survive a lot longer.

Super cheap and good Muslim food! Smile Jan 30, 2015

Categories : Malay | Food Court | Halal

Located at the corner of north canteen is this rather new Muslim stall. It has changed hands many times and I think this new management has got the right combination to a long lasting Muslim stall. The food is cheap, and I mean very cheap!

I mean look at the prices! I've tried the Mee soto before and it was indeed fabulous for $1.20! No one believed me that I paid $1.20 for it! Lol but today they ran out and rice is all I could get.

For just $2, I got thai sauce (sweet and sour) fried chicken and omelette with rice that I asked for curry veggie sauce to be drenched over. The veggie curry isn't spicy, and I don't normally take spicy so you get what I mean.

The chicken pieces were huge and so was the huge chunk of omelette and the big serving of rice!
For $2, I might have to say that this is probably the cheapest Muslim food in Singapore! And the food is good too!! It's not crappy food, even the beef rendang was Soo tender!

Definitely a huge fan of this stall and hope to try more of their various dishes! smile

New Astons Smile Dec 29, 2014
Categories : Steaks and Grills

With the new opening of Kallang Wave Mall, comes this new Astons'. It is hidden on the second floor, right at the corner
They were doing a promo of $10 for a chicken cutlet or Fish and chips and a bottle of Snapple. So my family jumped on this promotion.

Here is the gigantic fried and crispy chicken cutlet. I've had Astons' chicken cutlet many times and everytime, I enjoy it without fail. This proves that they have a decent standard of quality control, as I always manage to get the same texture and taste from the chicken cutlet, no matter which outlet I head to.

Black pepper chicken, the sauce itself was abit too salty and peppery for myself, but my sister enjoyed it. Flooded with fries is how I would describe this picture. Astons is quite generous with the sides and I thoroughly enjoyed my daily share of carbs from this.

Here is the fried fish and chicken sets. Which was more than enough for all of us, as we ended up not being able to clean up our plates.

Recommended Dish(es):  Chicken Cutlet,Mac n Cheese,Onion Rings

Spending per head: Approximately $13

Prata Breakfast! Smile Dec 29, 2014   (Related Review)
Categories : Indian | Food Court

I love egg prata and even more so when they cook it like a "bomb" where by the egg is laid out like a sunny side up! And cooked only on one side so instead of a normal egg prata that has the egg mixed into the prata. This is like a kosong/plain prata with an egg on the other side and the egg yolk will still be runny!

Of course this requires you to give the cook some instructions but they understood my order and made one to perfection! For $1.20, this is my definition of a happy breakfast!
