Really Good fried carrot cake! Smile Dec 27, 2015

Categories : Singaporean | Chinese | Hawker Centre

Located on the middle stretch of beo crescent is this humble fried carrot cake shop. The young girl pressumably the owners' daughter takes orders and the lady boss is super busy frying away. Most of the customers order the large $3 carrot cake and walk away and come back to pick up the carrot cake.

The owner fries very quickly and is able to quickly serve up the customers.
Crispy

Crispy

Here is my portion of $2.50 white carrot cake. The exterior is burnt to perfection and the aroma of the fish sauce is so fragrant! The lady boss uses ample egg to ensure that there's egg on every part of the carrot cake!

All in all, my carrot cake cravings were satisfied! smile

Joy to the Little Red Dot! Smile Dec 03, 2015

Swensen's has been a family restaurant that does American classic dishes with a local twist in Singapore since 1979. Christmas is all about celebrating good times with family & friends over delightful meals and Swensen's has planned out a Christmas menu just for you!

Looking at their christmas menu, you realize that they have gone "Asian Fusion" with full force, such as Potong supreme pleaser, sweet corn fever and turkey burger!

1. Firecracker Soft Shell Shrimps $8.50++

These flavoured bombs are coated with a tasty blend of spices and fried for that perfect crunch. They are outrageously addictive, these lightly battered morsels are served with swensen's very own pineapple BBQ sauce. The batter around the shrimp was salty but not too overpowering, paired with the sweet and savoury sauce, I could devour all the shrimp and yet not feel overly thirsty!

They were very generous with the shrimps as I think there had to be at least 20 of them. When I was finally though an entire generation of shrimps. Lo and behold, there was a a bed of thick cut french fries!! The fries together with the pineapple BBQ sauce was a match made in heaven! I highly recommend ordering this just for the sauce!

2. Chicken Istimewa $15.90++

Succulent Chicken laced in a mild spricy fragrant marinate with tastes from exotic Indonesia. The chicken is grilled to perfection, leaving a very juicy and succulent chicken thigh meat. Served with traditional sambal balachan, which I found a bit too spicy and achar. This is the epitome of a rich Asian culture that makes you feel right at home for Christmas.

The chicken was very memorable and there were 2 big pieces. I felt that they could've served you more rice, as the rice portion was very small, and more like a tiny sidedish! The rice could've been a coconut seasoned rice like the nasi lemak kind.

3. Chocopop $5.50++

Chocolate ice cream coated with cocoa pops. I wanted the Ol'Vanilla as it was coated with almonds but after ordering, a staff came back to explain that they had run out and recommended this instead.

Despite it's glamorous look, it was actually completely frozen. It took about 10 minutes of starring at it on a plate, before my teeth could BITE into it. There's chocolate ice cream all the way to the bottom of the cone as well! I loved the creamy, sweet and slightly bitter chocolate ice cream!

Swensen's has developed over the years to become a restaurant chain offering not only ice cream, but fun and friendly casual-dining with a wide selection of hearty food, desserts, beverages, ice cream cakes and takeaway novelties.

For christmas this year, if you looking for a dine-out family meal, do give swensen's a go! Their food offerings might just surprise you like they did to my expectations!

Thai Milk Tea INFUSED Waffles! Smile Nov 15, 2015

Kaffles is located within Stirling along the busy Cheong Chin Nam Road. Once the Beauty World MRT nearby is up and running, I'm sure business along this stretch will be booming, until then, the nearest MRT is probably botanic gardens. The interesting thing about Kaffles is that they're only opened on saturdays from 6pm-1am, the reason being that they can co-share the rental cost with other F&B partners in the rental-high upper bukit timah!

Stirling itself offers western food options like sliders and has a indoor seating capacity of about 20-30 pax and a larger outdoor dining area with quirky chalk board menu drawings. It took us about 20 minutes to get seats for 3 pax, as most of their dinners came in groups of 2 and were seated together. We couldn't just drag a chair and add to our table as the walkway was narrow and we would be obstructing it.

Kaffles sells about 4 signature kaffles with larger selection of ice cream. I was surprised to see that they offer additional ice cream flavours like apple pie and earl grey, but yet no Kaffle  signatures with those interesting ice cream flavours. Almost every table around us ordered a Kaffle too!

1. Churros 4 for $6

In anticipation for our Kaffles, we got churros from the Churros Factory which is served by Stirling. The Churros weren't very hot but their texture was crispy and yet chewy on the inside. The insides were dense and cakey at the same time. I loved the cinnamon sprinkles along with the thick and not too sweet chocolatey sauce! It was a good start to my sweet tooth craving supper menu!

2. Thai Milk Tea Kaffles $12.90

Thai Milk Tea infused waffles with thai milk tea drizzle and vanilla bean "drumstick". This is the first waffle I've tried that has Thai Milk Tea in the batter! It was crispy when it was first served and these waffles are some of the thickest waffles I've eaten. They're served with steak knives to cut through that glorious 2 inches of meaty waffle! But strangely though, dubbed as a Thai Milk Tea waffle, it was served with vanilla bean ice cream rather than Thai Milk Tea? There's never enough of Thai Milk Tea! The vanille ice cream tasted okay, nothing too impressive about it, not when you can taste the thai milk sauce drizzled over it!

Check out that thai milk tea infused waffle along with the vanila bean ice cream. I must admit I wasn't sure how to eat this. Eat the ice cream with the waffle and with the cone? Eat the cone first or last? Eat the ice cream with the cone? HAHA! Either ways the cone was fresh with the hard chocolate coating with sugary goodness!

3. Koko Kaffles $11.90

Buttermilk waffles with gula melaka, red ruby and coconut "drumstick". The coconut ice cream was spectacular and I think it went very well with the gula melaka sauce. I actually ended up eating the coconut ice cream with the Thai Milk Tea waffles instead! The buttermilk waffles were fragrant and stayed crispy throughout, whereas the thai milk tea waffle slowly became soggy by itself, can't blame it, since it has thai milk tea in the waffle. The coconut ice cream had a very distinct coconut flavour and was sweet enough for my liking. Together with the gula melaka sauce, it was the BOMB! The ice cream was more of a sorbet type as it wasn't too creamy, slightly icy in texture as well.

Both waffles were very "instagrammable" and came out pretty quickly despite most of the patrons ordering the waffles as well! The staff were friendly and helpful. It was a great supper dining experience. Definitely would be my number 1 choice whenever I have a Thai Milk Tea craving!!

Located in Demsey is the White Rabbit. It has a rather decent sized parking lot which is free of charge for customers. The White Rabbit is more of an upscale fine dining place you would take someone to celebrate a special meal with. It is also a beautifully restored 1930s Ebenezer chapel.
Down the rabbit hole!

Down the rabbit hole!

The White Rabbit resides in a restored old chapel along the stretch of Dempsey Hill. The historical establishment itself is very captivating in creating a unique ‘Alice in Wonderland’ concept of The White Rabbit, attempting to bring you to another world.

There's a very cute outdoor dining area lined with lounge chairs. The staff explained that they were setting up a wedding the next door. I can definitely see this place being used for weddings.

I am glad that they managed to preserve the stained glass from when this was a place of worship. The atmosphere in the chapel was peaceful and romantic with ceiling lights as well very powerful air conditioning systems. So much so, that they staff offered us ladies, scarves or even warm water instead of cold water.

1. Truffle Mac and Cheese with mushrooms $16++

Though this is an appetizer portion. It had alot of mac and cheese and thus, became very filling quickly. The amount of truffle added to the mac and cheese was very significant and you could smell and taste it. They were generous with the mushrooms as well! The texture of the cheese was warm enough to enjoy and yet stick all the macaroni together.

There was also bread service. I picked tomato basil bread, and since the bread is all freshly baked in house. The bread was piping hot and extremely crisp to begin with. The provided butter melted immediately once I applied it into the bread.

2. Deconstructed Cheese Cake $18++

This was an interesting dessert. The wait staff asked me to mix up everything on the plate as there was graham crumble, blueberry sorbet and pop rocks all layered one on top of the other. The cream cheese wasn't too sweet or sour. The pop rock popped in your mouth in every mouthful. It was definitely a surprise for me. I enjoyed that the graham crackers were crumbles instead of a hard crust, that you would find in any typical cheesecake. This way, you could enjoy the graham crackers bit by bit.

3. Chocolate Fondant $16++

The chocolate fondant consisted of a caramel core lava cake with fruits and banana and rum ice cream. The lava cake wasn't moist on the exterior, but rather it was bread crust like. On the inside, was a small pocket of caramel that flowed out like liquid gold! The banana and rum ice cream was full of creamy goodness. I guess to compliment all the sweet stuff, all the fruits provided were sour?

All in all, a very beautiful place to spend time with your loved ones. The food and the ambience are both top notch!

Tea desserts from Hokkaido Smile Sep 28, 2015
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Japanese

Oki-Machi together with Hokkaido Teaspresso has opened at Seletar Mall on 1st August 2015. As it's still a rather new establishment they have still kinks to work out like not having the right sized takeway containers.

They are having a promotion for their mochis at $1 a stick except for the bacon sticks which are $2.

They have a wide variety of drinks and I find them reasonably priced. The staff are very friendly and helpful and will assist in recommending a drink. For example I was thinking of a topping for honey dezato and the cheerful staff recommended me to try their white pearls. There were 3 very enthusiastic staff at this kiosk whom were glad to exclaim "Arigatou Gozaimasu" after each customer had received their drinks.

1. Honey Dezato $2.50
With white pearl toppings

With white pearl toppings

It wasn't too sweet despite not picking a sugar level and it was very milky as well. The white pearls were alot chewier than typical pearls I've tried. It was also sweet and the fact that they didn't put too much ice into the cup made it very easy to reach the white pearls. I highly recommend trying their white pearl toppings.

2. Azuki Dezato $2.50

I had first thought that this was a matcha drink but as I drank it, it just tasted like milk tea with alot of red beans. It tasted like red bean with milk, the red beans were at the bottom and were just as easy to drink up with the provided straw.

All in all, a different "bubble tea" experience that surprised me.
