Waffles and Gelato Smile Apr 04, 2016

Categories : Café | Desserts and Cakes | Ice Cream and Gelato

Located at Home Team NS is the second outlet of Milk & Honey Gelato, not to be confused with Milk & Honey, the one that serves frozen yogurt. This is more of a cafe with a family oriented set up.

What stands out most is the décor and the wide variety of gelato flavours it offers. The café has a mix of yellow and black furniture which stands out from its white washed walls. It is not possible for one to miss this café tucked in between Saizeriya and Ossia Music.

They also have a selection of cakes and pastries. I noticed several customers walking in just to take away some of these sweet treats which got me interested into wanting to do the same!

While you can order plated desserts such as donut waffles and their signature gelatos, Milk and Honey Café also offers affordable salads and sandwiches such as ham and cheese and egg mayo.

Milk & Honey currently has 5 plated desserts, namely their donut waffles.

1. Berry Malt $5.90

Donut waffle and fused balsamic strawberry sorbet and salty malty gelato, strawberry compote and strawberry Tuile (thin baked strawberry biscuit)

The donut waffle was crisp on the outside and fluffy, soft and cake-like on the inside, just the way I like it. The abtter was fragrant with an eggy, buttery-like flavour. It had more of a cakey aroma. The standard of these donut waffles are quite different from any waffle or dont I have tried. The strawberry gelato was smooth, creamy and melt-in your mouth.  There was a very nice fragrant from the gelato as well.

2. Half Quaffles with Mao Shan Wang $8.50

One of the starlets of this café is definitely their freshly handmade quaffles (quarter waffles). Crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside, the quaffles are accompanied by creamy gelato of your choice which melts in your mouth with each bite!

A full sized quaffle is $5.50, and a half is $3. Gelato scoops are priced at $4.50-$5.50 and $5.50 being for a premium flavour like mao shan wang, for which each bill can only order one scoop of this limited flavour.

The highlight of this was the mao shan wang durian gelato was which was extremely smooth and creamy. The gelato here leaned towards the sweeter side as I have an acquired sweet tooth, this was the flavour for me. The gelato was so addictive, I couldn't bear to waste even a drop of it.

The waffles didn't turn soggy despite the gelato melting atop of it. The waffles had a very crisp and light texture. I could distinctively smell the buttermilk fragrance while they were cooking it on the waffle iron but the aroma disappeared by the time it was served. Maybe the durian gelato aroma overpowered the waffle?

3. Mango Cheese $6.20

Donnut waffle with parmesan cheese, mango compote, passionfruit coullis and passion fruit mango sorbet.

The mango cheese is a combination of sweet and sour tastes, topped with a crispy and flaky biscuit. I loved all the cubes of mangoes surrounding the donut waffle. They were sweet and a great compliment to the slightly sour sorbet. The sorbet though without dairy, still tasted very smooth and creamy. The lingering aroma of the mango flavour really won me over.

4. Mocha $4.80

For caffeine friends, enjoy their finest brewed coffee, a signature blend of coffee beans from Yahava KoffeeWorks'.

I really liked their mocha. It had the right notes of chocolate and coffee. The staff were also very friendly and accomodating to my orders. The coffee itself definitely gave me a much needed energy boost for the night!

5. Strawberry Float $5.90

This is a strawberry sorbet with soda water and strawberry sauce. You had to wait for the sorbet to completely melt before drinking this, otherwise you would just be drink plain soda water. Other than that, it was a nice, fruity and refreshing drink.

Overall : There's no other way to wrap up your day than to hang out at this cosy café with your loved ones while enjoying your favourite gelato and waffles. I really liked their mao shan wan durian gelato and their donut waffle creations!

Italian food and Shibuya Toast Smile Apr 01, 2016

Categories : Fusion | Bars/Lounges

Bodacious serves up simple and unpretentious food. They serve all-day breakfast menu dishes such as all time favourite Eggs Benedict, among many other chef's specials. It has an outdoor dining area that is sheltered as well as an indoor dining area complete with a bar top counter for beers and more.

The interior is very pop culture like with chic and sleek furnishing. The dining area is mainly lit up by natural lighting from the glass windows surrounding the entire bisotro, so you can be sure to get really good photos during the day. The air conditioning was just alright and kept me cool throughout my dining session. The iced water they served was chilled and had a citrusy taste.

The menu for the appetizers seems to have something for everyone, including my favourite truffle fries.

Their all day menu looked very satisfying but there were interesting items on the main menu like seafood risotto and pan fried sea bass that I was tempted to try. The menu itself is very simple with reasonable prices.

Check out the furnishing!

1. Mela Merillo $4.20+

This was an interesting drink or at least seemed like one on the menu. Listed as a mocktail tea that was strawberry flavoured. I was a bit shocked to see such a huge cup placed on my table by the waiter. Taste wise, it was more like strawberry syrup with peach syrup mixed with some sprite. The temperature of the drink was superb for the scorching hot weather outside.

2. Sea bass $16.80+ *Highly Recommended*

Pan-fried sea bass in spicy tomato sauce with mash potatoes. I decided to pick this as my main as I felt that it would lighter but I was wrong. The sea bass was huge, in comparison to what is offered at most eateries. It had a very crispy fish skin and my knife exposed a very soft and tender fish meat that tasted both fresh and with the tomato sauce was mind blowing. But sadly, the tomato sauce does overwhelm the crispy fish skin a bit and so the fish didn't stay crispy for too long. The mashed potatos were so soft and no clumps were seen. This was a perfect lunch option and I'm definitely getting it again. I cannot get over the crispy goodness of the fish and the sheer portion of the sea bass!

3. Spaghetti Vongole $15.80+

A crowd pleaser! Spaghetti & clams in white win sauce accompanied with a tomato salsa topping. We asked if we could get this without the tomato salsa but we were told it was cooked together with the spaghetti. This dish despite not having a spicy warning label was extremely spicy, like peppery mouth burning hot! They used a lot of garlic as well, so fellow office workers around, do check if you have external meetings after your lunch here before choosing this dish.

4. Shibuya Toast $13.80+ *Highly Recommended*

Acube of toasted, honey-drizzled, thick and uncut, soft milk bread, decorated with berries, topped with salted butter and vanilla ice cream. The thick toast had a slightly crisp exterior but the interior was kind of dry for my liking, but only on the edges. On the inside, the toast was layered with butter clustered all in the middle, evenly spreaded. The toast had a decent amount of sweet fragrance and when the staff placed it on my table. I could immediately sense my sweet tooth going "wow".

Portion is strongly recommended for sharing between 2 or more pax. The toast was still decent. Really really love the texture of their vanilla ice cream, it was so smooth and light, with a melt-in-your-mouth texture. The ice cream was pretty frozen, so after a pro-longed photo taking session, the ice cream finally warmed up to the right temperature for my fork to ease it's way into the ice cream.

This shibuya toast is a great option for those with a sweet tooth! My only wish was that this toast should be served with a portion of honey or syrup that we could drizzle over the ice cream! There was some syrup all over the plate, but it just wasn't enough for my "wannabe-diabetic" tastebud!

Overall : Loved the ambiance at Bodacious, and their newly revamped menu. Just wished the staff could've been more attentive to our needs during a weekday lunch hour.

Categories : Thai | Mookata

Located in a coffee shop in the matured estate of Ang Mo Kio is Chok Chai Mookata. Just opened 3 months ago by Len and Jon, these young and energetic duo have tasted the goodness of authentic Thai Mookata in Thailand. They then decided to bring back this delicious family sharing style of food to Singapore. They spent time learning the authentic marinating methods and tweaked their recipe to suit Singaporean taste buds.Their menu seemed very reasonable for a HDB coffeeshop. $28 for 2-3 pax and $45 for 4-5pax for a mookata set. Ala carte add-ons start at $3 for thai black pepper chicken, farlic lean meat and pork belly!
Lots of variety

Lots of variety

For the set menu, here's what you get
1. Thai Black Pepper Chicken
2. Thai Garlic Lean Meat
3. Prawns
4. Sotong
5. Scallops
6. Pork Ball
7. Crab Stick
8. Fish Ball
10. Hot dog
11. Xiao Bai Cai
12. Cabbage
13. Golden Mushroom
14. Sweet Corn
15. Carrot
16. Tang Hoon
17. Egg

Looking at the amount of ingredients for the price, I must say, this is probably the most bang for the buck mookata I've seen. There's a huge variation of ingredients at about $10 per pax. There is no beef in the set but you can order beef slices from the ala carte menu.

Owner Len explained that here at Chok Chai, they strongly believe in providing you with the authentic Thai experience, so much so that they import chilli from Thailand. They have invested in their own grinding techniques to make their own in-house chilli. He shared that the chilli had coriander, garlic and a mix of "secret" ingredients to give it the wow factor. There's both red and green chilli options. The bacon strips had a good ratio of fats to meat and it was extremely juicy and oily after grilling for some time.

A mookata experience is all about sharing food with your friends and family and cooking food together and for one another. It's a great opportunity for bonding.

The lean meat was very well marinated with a somewhat sweeter marinate in comparison to the other meats. It was very tasty and slightly chewy with every bite. It was definitely one of my favourite choice of meats during the meal. The liver cooked very quickly in the hot boiling soup surrounding the grill iron. It was very tasty and definitely pretty fresh.

The black pepper chicken wasn't too spicy but you could definitely taste the sharp peppery taste. But it didn't have me reaching for my non-existent Thai Milk Tea repeatedly, so I was okay with the pepper levels. It was tasty and flavourful. The chicken didn't have much fats on it either. It was rather lean.

The mookata broth was made with pork bone, white radish, pandan leaves and more "secret" ingredients. This according to owner Len was the "authentic" soup broth he had learnt from his trips to Thailand. So there's basically only one soup broth available here and there's no tom yum options either. The maggie noodles were seriously awesome as they could really absorb all the soup essence in one go.

After we cooked the noodles, we had to repeatedly top up the soup. The Thai speaking staff were also very attentive and noticed the soup levels going down each time we cooked the noodles and volunteered to top up the soup for us, despite having a kettle of soup placed next to the mookata.

There's also a separate dish of vegetables. I'm no rabbit so vegetables aren't for me, but I did love their generous serving of enoki mushrooms.

Som Tam (Papaya Salad) with Fresh Prawn
SPICY!!

SPICY!!

A famous Thai appetizer for any Thai meal be it mookata or not is Som Tam. But as I don't eat spicy foods, I've never actually been able to gobble down a Som Tam myself. According to my friends who tried it, they all said it was spicy! But looking at the generousity of the prawns, I can tell Chok Chai is pretty game to deliver an appetizer to whet your appetite.

Overall : Hidden gem in Ang Mo Kio, very reasonable prices for mookata with quality ingredients accompanied with great service.

Now, if only they served thai iced milk tea! I would have a complete thai dinner!

Categories : Desserts and Cakes | Ice Cream and Gelato

Giovanni L. is owning a repertoire of 102 international ice cream varieties. Most of them are made with our own recipe. Each year 2 to 3 new flavors of ice cream will be created and several of their gelato flavours are international award winners!

Seattle Pike Chowder is under the same management as Giovanni L., and the gelato brought in directly from Germany and decorated in Singapore. It is hard to turn down a scoop of delicious and fresh gelato!

At one glance, you will notice several different types of chowders and you can havethem with a bread bowl, or in a cup. Seattle Pike Peak's chowder also offers sandwiches and a combo for a sandwich and a chowder.

They also have a small selection of cakes and pastries but the cakes looked abit dry and stale and I decided to get a muffin instead.  They also serve imported chilled beers which can go very nicely with gelato.

1. Chocolate Gelato Spaghetti $12.90

A very interesting creation that can only be found at Giovanni is gelato spaghetti. They have a few flavours, namely, chocolate, vanilla and berries. I decided to go with chocolates as it came with almonds, hazelnuts and walnuts. That's a lot of nuts! I was surprised at it's presentation, with 2 waffle biscuits at the side. It was nothing like I've ever had before.

The gelato was nice with chocolate syrup drizzled over it. The gelato here isn't very sweet and is generally milder in flavour, probably the lack of using artificial flavouring. Underneath the gelato is whipped cream which gives the entire dish a light and creamy feel. There were so much nuts that I had a nut in every spoonful. A truly interesting dish, but even though it is gelato stringed into spaghetti, the ice cream melts too fast for you to twirl the ice cream spaghetti up like real spaghetti noodles.

2. Apple Cinnamon muffin $3.90

The apple cinnamon muffin is pretty sizable with a crunchy and almost crispy like top, that is filled with crusty cinnamon crunch. The muffin on the inside was a dense with a cinnamon aroma and essence. There were cubes of apples wrapped around in cinnamon sauce, similar to what you find in a McDonald's apple pie on the inside of the muffin. It was surprise to me. It was pretty good muffin and I'm definitely getting it again next time

3. Smoked Salmon Chowder in a Breadbowl $12.90

This chowder very interesting, as a huge fan of smoked salmon I was intrigued by the tastes. Seattle's Pike Chowder managed to capture the essence of the smoked salmon blend it in with cream cheese and TA-DA! You have an amazing bowl of smoked salmon chowder. I highly recommend this to any fellow smoked salmon lover! The taste of the smoked salmon comes in strong, as an aftertaste.
This was a very creamy bowl of soup, not much to bite into, just good, flavourful chowder. A good compliment to any sandwich.

Since this place is literally marketed with "Seattle" on the signboard, all their chowders come directly from Seattle on a daily basis, to ensure top-notch quality. Their bread however is made locally. The bread definitely isn't the same bread I had in Seattle.
It was alot fluffier and not as tough, it may suit the locals more, but it is definitely a change.

4. After Eight ice cream (single scoop)

The After Eight was very rich and not as creamy as you would expect, it had a slightly rough texture which would indicate the mint bits embedded into the gelato.

As with any ice cream parlour in Singapore, they melt fast! But the dining here at Fort Canning is well cooled with power air conditioning. Having a wide range of gelatos gives me a feeling they are out to fight the already competitive gelato market. They do not offer typical flavours such as matcha or cookies and cream, but rather very unique flavours like Amorena which is a vanilla gelato with amorena cherries. It will blow your mind! Think of a super awesome raspberry ripple!

Overall : Interesting ice cream creations, great imported ice creams and seattle soups in a very cosy and culturally rich location. Service staff were also very attentive and quick to serve the ice cream and provided great ice cream flavour recommendations

Are you a Fat Boy? Smile Mar 29, 2016
Categories : Multi-Cuisine | Restaurant | Burgers and Sandwiches

Even though Fat Boys has been around in Singapore for quite a while, I've never been to one. But one weekday night I decided to give it a go. They offer western comfort food, like greasy burgers, artery clogging mac and cheese, chili cheese fries, milk shakes etc.

They also offer customization of burgers, so you get to pick your veg, meat, egg, sauces and even buns. You could pretty much create a mega upsized burger with all forms of protein and dairy products, as long as your wallet was okay with it.

Most burgers are priced around $13-$18++, you can top up $2.50++ for truffle parmesan fries or chili cheese fries. Just top up and you won't regret it. Totally worth the extra time in the gym and money!

So here was our feast for 3 pax, 2 hungry adult males and I! It was way too much food. I could sense food coma approaching as I looked at the table!

1. Shrooms Burger $13++ + $2.50 for chili cheese fries

I love mushrooms and the mushrooms here were quite generous. The burger bun was fluffy and slighly crispy on the edges, but as time went by, it became a soggy burger bun. The onions weren't very flavourful but rather, they were quite oily. Nonetheless, the onions brought out the flavour of the juicy mushrooms.

I loved the melted cheese. It was perfect for the thick beef patty. I really liked this combination and for the price. I felt that it was pretty decent. The chili fries weren't as good as I had remembered. But the fries were crisp all the way.

2. DIY Burger + $2.50 for truffle fries

At Fay Boys you get to customize your burger. For this baby, we have

Honey Oat bun $2 with
1. Beef Patty $9
2. Bacon $2.50
3. Sauteed Shitake Mushroom $2
4. Swiss Cheese $1.80
5. Fried Egg $1.50
6. Fried Onion Rings $1.50
7. Garlic Aioli $0.80

Total $21.10++

It is a pretty pricey burger but it has everything that I want on a burger, no veggies! The burger came pretty quickly and sadly I didn't get the honour of bursting the runny egg yolk. The garlic aioli sauce was addictive and it really gave everything in the burger the same flavour.

The truflle fries faired better than the chili cheese fries. The truffle aroma was strong and it could be tasted in every fry!

3. Chicken waffle sandwich $15.50++

Another sinful main course, chicken cutlet sandwiched between cheese underneath a buttermilk waffle. The chicken cutlet was pretty thin despite it's length, but it was crispy and breaded. The waffle was quite tasteless despite it's colour. The mash potatoes were strangely cold but tasty.

4. Onion Rings

I loved these onion rings mainly due to the batter they used. It was fragrant and very crispy. It wasn't doughy at all. The onion rings were huge in diameter and they tasted great with the bbq sauce.

5. Calamari

The calamari was abit too chewy for my liking. But the wasabi mayo was it's saving grace. Definitely preferred the onion rings over the calamari.

Overall : Decent burgers with quick and friendly service. Just skip the sides.
