Revamped Cafe in the heart of AMK OK May 05, 2016

Located under a block of flats, in beween ang mo kio and bishan mrt is Workbench bistro. I last visited this cafe almost a year ago, when they have a small selection of food and was portrayed to be more of a waffles and ice cream hang out.

Their menu offering has doubled with more options to cater to various foodies. BBQ ribs, fish and chips, even salted egg wings. The dessert section with blue velvet waffle caught my eye and I asked the staff what is a blue velvet waffle and she said it was a waffle that was blue in colour! I knew I had to try it!

1. Spam Fries $9

I love spam fries and this was a pretty huge portion served with parmesan cheese and garlic mayo. The spam fries were sliced to the right thickness and was slightly crisp on the outside and soft and tasty on the inside. Eat them while they're hot. Once they've cooled, they become pretty hard and isn't as enjoyable.

2. Matcha Latte $5

I liked the latte art on my matcha latte and it wasn't overly sweet. It has subtle bitternotes with each sip. I really enjoyed it. The temperature was just right and I slowly enjoyed this drink throughout my meal.

3. Oven baked prawn and cheese pasta $13

Looked decent but it didn't taste up to standard. The pasta tasted bland and though they were generous with the prawns. I couldn't quite taste the cheese.

5. Salted egg wings $12 *highly recommended*

With the salted egg craze all over Singapore, I was still surprised to see salted egg wings here. Unlike a popular salted egg wing shop in timbre+, the wings here were very crispy and definitely exceeded my expectations. They were deep fried to perfection and then submerged in a golden sauce of goodness. The salted egg wasn't over powering or gerlat. Do share this with a couple of people too!

6. BBQ Ribs $18

I was abit stunned when I saw the portion of the ribs. Huge for $18, but once I grabbed my fork and knife and started to dig in, I was even more stunned when I felt the toughness of the meat. The meat was literally "glued" to the bones and it took some effort to get the meat off the bones. The meat was also dry in most areas. In the areas that the meat wasn't so dry, it was at least edible. The fries did way better than the ribs. I polished the fries off the plate!

7. Beer Battered Fish and Chips $13

As mentioned in the BBQ ribs, the paprika fries were my favourite but the fish and chips here were pretty decent too. Crispy and crunchy beer batter was definitely the highlight of this dish. The fish meat tasted like your typical dory fish meat. But at $13, in a heartland area, I think this cafe still provides decent value to the table.

8. Blue velvet waffle with cookies and cream ice cream $9.30

The blue velvet waffle was indeed blue, but a very dark blue. It gave me the impression that it was a charcoal waffle! Served with caramel sauce, the cookies and cream was okay. It was creamy but could've been smoother in texture.
Cakey  waffle

Cakey  waffle

The waffle itself was very dense and cakey. I'm a crispy waffle lover so this wasn't the waffle for me. My friends however finished it off in minutes!

Overall : This cafe does try hard to meet the cafe hopper experience. It has reasonably priced and for people living around the area, grabbing a weekend brunch would be ideal at workbench bistro. Nice, chill out ambience also helps you take your mind off the misses of some of the food here.

S'mores Waffle OK Mar 20, 2016
Categories : Ice Cream and Gelato

S'mores Coffee & Creamery arrived in Upper Thomson late last year and I've been meaning to try them out for the longest time! The have open till 1am on fridays and saturdays woohoo! The shop itself is along same row as Nunsongyee and Habitat. But the bus stop is right in front of it, for those taking a bus to this supper location

The mainly serve coffee and ice cream but they also have 4 main breakfast items that could just satisfy your hunger pangs. As I had arrived on a friday at 10pm, the cafe was rather empty but as time passed, by 11pm, all the tables were filled with young hipster crowds.

They offer a wide array of ice cream flavours, but favourites like sea salt caramel, chocolate, mango sorbet, thai milk tea, cookies and cream were available. There's definitely somethig for everyone here at S'mores.

The colour scheme of S'mores was a very vibrant and colourful set up. The tables and stools were black with a colourful bright pink wall. The shop was well cooled with the powerful air conditioners on a hot and humid friday night.

1. Single Scoop (Thai Milk Tea)

They were very generous with their single scoop, check out the size of this! I'm a thai milk tea fan and this literally tasted like a frozen thai milk tea. No joke. The taste was spot on. It was smooth and creamy, with a subtle sweet fragrance of the condensed milk in the thai milk tea ice cream. Every mouthful made me want to dig my plastic spoon back into the cup for more. This is probably my most favourite thai milk tea ice cream I've ever tried. The ice cream didn't melt too quickly either. It held it's shape and form during my "phototaking" session.

2. Chocolate Milkshake *must try*
A  bit  too  sweet  for  my  liking

A  bit  too  sweet  for  my  liking

This chocolate milkshake was smooth, with a great sugar-rush to perk me up refreshing flavour. It was chilled to the right temperature. The chocolate milkshake itself was extremely thick and I do recommend sharing this. There was a slightly mild milky taste with every sip, but the chocolate was still overpowering the milk taste. This would make a great drink the scorching hot weather. This is definitely a must try for chocoholics!

3. S'mores Waffle $5.80 with earl grey and cookies and cream *must try*

The presentation of this waffle is very different from other establishments. The buttermilk waffles are very thick and pretty much "well-done" or "toasted". They aren't light and airy or dense. They have a texture closer to that of toasted bread, that stays toasted even when all the ice cream has melted!

The toasted marshmallows stole the limelight here. Check out how charred they are on the edges of the waffle! The marshmallows were sweet, slightly too sweet for my friend but for me it was spot on. It wasn't as sweet as the thick chocolate sauce on the bottom waffle.

I really enjoyed their earl grey ice cream. I was in love with the earl grey taste that was very sharp in the smooth ice cream. It also paired well with the crispy waffle. The cookies and cream was on the sweeter side, compared to the earl grey, so for me, coupling the cookies and cream ice cream with the waffle that was topped with the chocolate sauce was too much sweetness overdose for me. If I had the choice, I would've just asked burnt marshmallow creme on both waffles.

Overall : A great place to hang out for supper, and definitely do try the S'mores waffle, it's totally worth the $ and calories.  Service was also pleasant and friendly!

American Style Wings OK Mar 16, 2016

Categories : American | Fast Food | Halal | Burgers and Sandwiches

Located on the 4th floor of Bugis plus is Wing Zone. Having studied in the US, I do miss wing nights and grabbing a whole bucket of wings for cheap and washed down with a cold root beer. But being in Singapore, these wings don't come cheap and no one seems to sell them in buckets (50 wings)  Wing Zone is touted to have had 20 years of experimental success with their 13 flavours, originating from Florida.

Looking at the menu, it really reminded me of being back at my second home. The usual items like mozarella sticks, burgers, wedges, winglets and drumlets etc. Most of it, seemed pretty affordable and they are all nett priced.

This was their weekday lunch menu from 11am-3pm. I visited on a tuesday afternoon at 12pm and my colleague and I were the only customers the entire time. After you have picked your order, regardless if it's a burger or not, you have to pick a flavour.

- Buffalo Bliss
- Mango Fire

- Nuclear Habanero
- Thai Chili
- Sweet Samurai
- Liquid Gold
- Honey Q
- Garlic Parm
- Cinnamon Maple
- Tokyo Dragon
- Lemon Zinger
- Cool Ranch

1. Mozarella Sticks $6.95

You get 5 mozarella sticks for $6.95. First off, the exterior of the mozarella stick wasn't breaded, but rather just covered in flour. It was piping hot when served with the super chilled and cold salsa. This was completely unexpected but oh well! The mozarella stick did have a long stringy cheese in the center which wasn't impressive in taste or texture. It felt very chewy and hard.

Check out the stretch!

The batter that covered the mozarella stick was too thick and intense for me. I got pretty full from slowly eating one mozarella stick.

2. Chicken Tenders (4 pc)  $7.95

Served with a side of full-flavored version of traditional honey mustard offers blissful relief from the heat aka Liquid Gold. The chicken tenders were dry and hard. The were hot but I can pressume the meat was just as frozen as the mozarella sticks were frozen a long time ago. Not a single chicken tender tasted tender. It was another disappointment. The sauce however was it's saving grace.

3. 1/4 Pound Burger $8.95

The burger though small in size, was the best tasting item we had ordered. The meat was seasoned with Honey Q  that had Sweet honey and smoky BBQ to deliver great Southern flavour. The meat itself wasn't as dry as the chicken tenders or mozarella sticks. The bread felt a bit hard and stale though. The tomatoes and veggies used in the burger tasted fresh. The wedges were slightly too salty for my taste but they were fresh and crisp on every bite.

4. 6 Pc Wings $7.95

I got a side of 6 pc wings with Tokyo Dragon which had hot honey meets classic teriyaki for an experience of ginger, soy and heat. The wings were dry but the skin of the chicken was slightly crispy. The sauce gave a sharp sweet and sour sensation. The sauce was evenly distributed amongst the 6 pieces of chicken.

Overall : The food came quickly, maybe because we were the only customers during a weekday lunch time, but the food didn't satisfy any of my cravings for wings. The staff were polite and very friendly. They were also very patient and helpful when it came to picking a sauce for the wings.

This is my third visit to Kokomama and they have a slightly upgraded menu. With all the salted egg croissant craze, Kokomama has quickly come up with their own rendition of a salted egg croissant as well as other baked main courses. Their location, in Dhoby Ghaut, makes it very easy to locate and they also have a strong human traffic cross flow. Their prices are nett price and very affordable for the huge student population that surrounds Kokomama.

Right next to the cashier, you will notice their array of baked goods. Lots of croissants, both savoury and sweet. The pizzas are also laid out here.

1. Chilli Crab Pizza $7.90

This was a new item on the menu. It looked pretty big for one person and even when sliced in half. It was very filling for me. The crab meat was mainly crab stick, which was disappointing, but the cheese was so good. It was sinful, but it was melted and the texture was consistent throughout the entire pizza.

I must say, Kokomama did inherit some A grade ovens from the previous tenant, 3 petiti croissants. All their baked items all come out good results. I couldn't really taste the chilli crab and it really wasn't spicy. What threw me off slightly was the crust of the pizza. The entire base of the pizza seemed to be one giant slab of bread. The crust of the bread was crisp all over the edges and even in the center, it was hard as a huge biscuit.

The staff also forgot my order of pizza, until about 30 minutes later when I went up to the counter to ask for it and then they apologized for their mistake.

2. Salted Egg Croissant $6.50

I've tried other salted egg croissants and this is the first salted egg croissant I've tried whereby the salted egg was very pale in yellow. It tasted very buttery as well. The croissant stayed crisp despite an overly long photo taking session.

The salted egg taste wasn't evident enough for me. The croissant was buttery and flaky but it didn't have enough layers to make me want to come back for more. The salted egg croissant didn't flow as much as I had expected either. It took some "persuasion" to get the salted egg to flow out. The salted egg sauce wasn't over whelmingly sweet which was good for me. But it quickly became gerlat for me and I highly recommend you to share this, if this is your first time trying a salted egg croissant.

3. Baked Seafood Rice

I've tried a few baked rice dishes here at Kokomama and all of them were okay in my opinion. The cheese was what made me like them and order them again, but the ingredients were lacking. The seafood baked rice was one of their pricier options. Ingreidents included a ring of squid, crab meat and a clam. The ingredients weren't marinated as such, they tasted bland. The rice didn't have any sauce to it, so underneath the layer of melted cheese, sat a bed of white rice. Luckily, the staff offered us saucers of minced beef pasta sauces which I quickly spooned together with the rice!

Overall : An easy to get to location, with simple comfort food at affordable prices

Thai food OK Mar 09, 2016
Categories : Thai | Restaurant | Steaks and Grills | Kids-Friendly

Bangkok Jam is a chain of Thai fast food style with a cosmopolitan dining concept. They are strategically located in major shopping centres in Singapore. All of which have a similar feel and decor. They tend to decorate the dining rooms with pop art, vibrant colours and hints of Bangkok.

Bangkok Jam is another concept by Creative Eateries, the same group who run Siam Kitchen, Sho-Teppan and Suki-ya. You will notice that the cashier for Bangkok Jam is the same cashier as Sho-Teppan.

The menu is one page and most of the items on the board are either thai food or thai fusion food. Most of the items that aren't indicated to be spicy are somewhat spicy, so do ask the wait staff if it's spicy or not.

1. Egg Noodles with Crabmeat, Prawns & Bacon $14.50++

I decided to try this out as I love bacon and crab meat and there aren't too many eateries that offer this east-meet-west fusion. The egg noodles were soft and layered in oil, but still tasted slightly sweet. The bacon was crispy on the edges and some pieces were blackened which I thoroughly enjoyed. The crab meat was legit crab meat, not crab stick and there were 3 juicy and crunchy prawns in the mix. There were cubes of garlic scattered all over the plate and I was busy picking each one of them out!

2. Spaghetti with Roasted Pork, Asian Herbs & Pork Crackling $13.90++

This was a complete let down. Not only was the pork not "crackling" but it was super tough and hard to bite or even chew. The spaghetti was a little hard and was very oily. Bangkok Jam definitely needs to think about using less oil in all their dishes. But the noodles had a good fragrance from the overdose of garlic and olive oil.

3. Stir Fried Kway Teow with New Zealand Beef & Holy Basil $13.90++

Instead of getting Pad Thai, we decided to get this. The beef was fresh and tender. It wasn't overly chewy and had a good balance between the saltiness and the sweetness of the tomatoes. The kway teow surprisingly wasn't too oily. The spgaghetti had way more oil on it's plate than this! I was rate this plate of kway teow similar to what you can get from your neighbourhood coffeeshop except that this plate costs almost $15 after GST and service charge. The portion was rather small. I think this wouldn't be enough for any hungry person.

Overall :  So-so food with hits and misses but the stylish ambience will make you feel like staying in longer to chill out with friends.
