Categories : American | Desserts and Cakes

From the creators of Montana Singapore is their latest addition on the second floor of POMO, the shop itself can be accessed through the entrance of Montana Singapore. They are marked at customizable donuts.

You can pick from their Selection of :

1. Gula Melaka Pineapple
2. Apple Berry Crea Cheese
3. Mango Peanut Butter
4. Green Tea Yuzu
5. Salted Caramel Nutella
6. Chai Bandung
7. Salted Yolk Cereal
8. Dark Chocolate Caramel

All of which are priced at $5.50 each.

You can almost choose to "Pimp your dough"
Additional Donut at $1.20 each, more glaze at $1.50 each, more toppings at $1.50 and additional filling at $1.50 each. It's a full-fledged DIY donut counter!

I believe that this is the first of it's kind in Singapore too!
Red velvet crumble anyone?

Red velvet crumble anyone?

Check out their donuts on the right, all ready to be pimped up!
Mango White Chocolate sauce anyone?

Mango White Chocolate sauce anyone?

They have a wide variety of glazes for the donuts which aren't commonly seen even in donut chains, such as apple pie bacon cream cheese, that's a mouthful!
Pineapple anyone?

Butter beer popcron, red velvet crumble sounds amazing! Definitely unique toppings again, never seen around Singapore.

They also have milkshakes at $6.80 which weren't ready yet during the food tasting session, but flavourts that stood out to me were Cheesey Cola which had coconut cherry cola milkshake with cherry cola sauce and watermelon lime foam!

1. Dark Chocolate Caramel $5.50
PIMPIN' it up!

PIMPIN' it up!

This is for chocolate lovers who like it extremely sweet and have craving for sticky sweet and salty caramel sauce. The donut itself was pretty sizeable. I definitely couldn't eat it all by myself. Just thinking about the calories is a sin by itself! In the syringe was the apple cider salted caramel sauce and to use all all the sauce provided, you might just get TYPE II diabetes no joke. I think half a syringe of it, was more than plenty!

Don't get me wrong, I liked the sauce, but I also know the fine line with enjoyment and over-doing it! The granola added a nice crunch to the donunt, but being that everything on the donut was sugar ladden and you really couldn't taste the granola at all.

2. Green Tea Yuzu $5.50

Green Tea jasmine glaze with yuzu white chocolate cream and black sesame cookie crumbs. I really liked this donut! Yes I am a green tea fan and very sad that they no longer sell green tea waffles at Montana. I, however, unofficially declare this as a reincarnation of their green tea waffles! The green tea jasmine glaze didn't have a green tea aroma, instead, it just smelt like any sweet glaze. But digging in, the green tea glaze had a noticeable taste that though sweet, wasn't as sweet as the apple berry or the chocolate glaze. The white chocolate cream was also a bit too sweet for my liking and coupled with the black sesame cookie, which I really couldn't taste, again, because of the over-sweetness of everything being sugar overdosed!

3. Apple Berry Cream Cheese $5.50

Smoked berry glaze with apple pie bacon cream cheese and granola. This was a visually appealing donut. The smoked berry glaze was vibrantly pink and the glossiness of the glaze was just so tempting! It gave off a strong and sweet berry smell. The applie pie bacon cream cheese was very thick, sticky and again, overly sweet. I do like cream cheese alot. But I would go easy on the syringe for this donut, maybe like 1/3 the dose? The smoked berry glaze worked very well with the donut. I might just order this donut with the smoked berry glaze and granola and skip the apple pie bacon cream cheese for now. Unless, I sense the lack of sugar in my daily diet.

Even this is my first time trying such donuts, I do like them. They definitely stand out from competition and having spent so many years in the US chalking up donuts from all the various chains, Fabulous Dough gives new meaning to donuts!

Fabulous Dough also continually gathers feedback to further improve their offerings, so who knows what they have in stored for us!

Overall: 1) Nice interior decoration 2) Visually appealing food 3) Interesting DIY Donut concept 4) Only for sweet tooth!

chinese food OK Dec 28, 2015

Coffee Hive was set up by four enterprising young men who love local coffee and came together to devise a cosy place with affordable coffee and great food to the people working around the area. They are touted to have a unique blend of local coffee is specially formulated to bring out the aroma and taste of original local coffee.

Coffee Hive aims to be a homely, cosy place for everyone. As such you will notice that at every Coffee Hive, they are situated in small locations with comfortable air-conditioning, kopitiam style wooden tables and chairs.

1. Chicken Ipoh Hor Fun $4.80

I love my kway teow and so I went with Ipoh Hor Fun. After you paid for your food, you will get a buzzer and then when the buzzer rings, walk over the food collection point to help yourself to the condiments and collect your order. The portion was pretty decent. Lots of hor fun. The hor fun was sufficiently wet and tasty. A lot of diced and fried garlic was used to achieve this taste.

There were mushrooms slices and chicken shreds, a very typical Ipoh Hor Fun style of serving. The soup was slightly too peppery for my liking and I think I tasted the use of MSG in the soup too.

2. Teh $1.40

The teh was okay, it wasn't too diluted or too sweet. But I did notice a slight bitter aftertaste after each sip.

3. Curry Chicken $5.80 (With bread/rice/noodles)

Their number 1 selling according to every table around me was their curry chicken. You have a choice to order it with toasted baguette, rice or noodles. I'm not sure what kind of noodle options you get but most of the customers had this with either bread or rice.

The curry was lemak and wasn't too spicy. I don't normally like spicy foods but this level of spiciness was okay with me. There were alot of chicken pieces which was tender and very easy to get the meat off the bones. Not alot of potatoes though.

All in all, a simple, quick eat place to savour local delights in the comfort of air-conditioning but at a slightly higher price than nearby food courts.

Play and Eat at Play Nation! OK Dec 10, 2015
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Desserts and Cakes | Juices | Burgers and Sandwiches

When board game cafes slowly boarded up, in came Play Nation! Play Nation is the perfect place for hours of good clean fun with friends and family. It is Singapore’s largest gaming cafe combining console games and board games. With a collection of over 200 board games and more than 100 Nintendo Wii and Xbox 360 games, there is something suitable to inject fun and laughter in family and group gatherings! On top of gaming, they also serve main courses as well as sides to go with your non stop gaming fun!

Check out their private rooms, which mind you are not sound proof and you need to have 8 pax to book an entire private room. I visited on a weekend at 730pm. We were charged $14.90++ for 2 hours of gaming with free flow drinks and popcorn which were popped fresh and refilled constantly!

I really really loved their popcorn, I think I grabbed 3 bowls of this from the tray warmer that keeps the popcorn fresh!

1. Chicken Cutlet $10.90++ / $8.90++ (with purchase of a game package)

The chicken cutlet tasted like every other fried chicken cutlet you've had at any hawker center. The chicken cutlet portion was pretty huge and I must say, Play Nation was also pretty generous with the fries.

2. Cheese Fries $4.90++

This is my second time ordering cheese fries and if you have 4 pax playing console games, you get to pick a free side priced $4.90++ and below, and I usually go for this! The cheese is usually hot and the flavour of the cheese is pretty strong. The french fries don't turn soggy at all and they're not too heavily salted either.

3. Pancakes $12.90++ / $10.90++ (with purchase of a game package)

The pancakes didn't taste that great, but their side dishes were more forgiving. If you were craving pancakes, you could most probably spend a couple of dollars more for pretty pancakes next door.

The scrambled eggs were done right. They were fluffy and not too salty. The chicken sausages though, were over fried and all of them got stuck together.

4. Chicken Chop $10.90++ / $8.90++ (with purchase of a game package)

The chicken cutlet tasted pretty normal too, just like their chicken cutlet. I'm guessing they're all commercially sourced. But if you do not like coleslaw, you can ask to get it swapped for more fries instead.

We got to Play Nation at 730pm, ordered and were done with our meals by 830pm. The staff were very attentive and tried to help in any way possible. They have some of the most cheerful staff I've ever seen. 830pm, we started playing console games till 1030pm afterwhich, we were told to leave or top-up for additional hours of console gaming.

Overall : 1) Quick service 2) Wallet-friendly meals 3) Do not expect too much for their food.

Kokomama Fusion Cafe OK Nov 18, 2015
Categories : Korean | Fusion | Bakery | Café | Desserts and Cakes | Burgers and Sandwiches

Located on the busy stretch of passerbys walking from dhoby ghaut to bras basah mrt is Kokomama. It is also situated on the ground floor of School of the Arts (SOTA), as such, they have an affordable menu. They have an excellent location between SMU, SIM, NAFA along with the SOTA students as well as being in a central location. Kokomama is marketed as a hip fusion cafe that sells different varieties of food and beverages - french bakery, chilli crab/curry/clam chowder bread bowls, rice bowls, coffee (latte etc), traditional kopi/ teh and dessert such as waffles and korean bingsu. And also affordable bread for people to take away!

As the previous tenants of this shop used to be the now defunct 3 Petit Croissants, the massive industrial ovens are still embedded into 30% of the kitchen that you can see through the glass window. Which is why Kokomama offers pastries, cakes and even bread. It has a large variety of croissants to pick from.

Once you take a glance at the menu, you realize you are looking at foods from different regions, like chilli crab sauce, QQ beef, unagi, baked rice and korean bingsu. It's quite hard to decide what exactly does this cafe cater to. But you can also tell based on the dining room arrangement, the owners probably wanted a no-frills cafe environment for students to hang out, grab a quick bite and dine in a comfortable environment.

You can't miss this shop walking from Dhoby Ghaut or Bras Basah MRT.

1. QQ Beef Rice $9.90

First up, we had a QQ beef rice, the beef reminded me of Yoshinoya's beef bowl, but with less fats. I liked the salad that came in the rice too, made it feel more nutritious. Sadly unlike the yoshinoya beef bowl, the rice here was just your typical rice, rather than Japanese rice.

There are options for sauces for the rice like chilli crab, clam chowder and curry chicken. These are also their soups for their signature blackout bread bowl. They serve these sauces to you in a small cup and you have the option to pour it into your rice. I felt that without the sauce, the rice was too dry to be eaten. The beef itself was slightly dry too and the texture could've been better.

There also sprinkle some seaweed garnishing on the top.

2. BBQ Unagi with Chilli Crab sauce $12.90

Next up unagi! They pretty generous with the unagi but same thing again, the rice wasn't Japanese rice. I wonder why they tout this in their Japanese menu but it's only Japanese because of the unagi and the seaweed?

I enjoyed the unagi was it was tasty and because of the sauce, the rice wasn't as dry as the QQ beef.

After mixing the unagi together with the salad and rice, you will have a mashed-up ungai salad with rice! Not a bad blend!  If you're feeling up to it, you can also spread some chilli crab sauce into it. But I felt the unagi didn't go well with the chilli crab sauce. Which, can be a tad spicy.

However the rice together with the chilli crab sauce made the rice more bearable.

3. Ham and Cheese baked rice $7.90
Student Meal

Student Meal

The cheapest on the menu was their student meals and at $7.90  with a drink, I felt it was still a bit high for this area. I can't imagine spending $8 a meal in my secondary school days. The cheese was well baked. I attribute this to their well-equipped baking infrastructure passed down from the previous tenant. The cheese was thick and delicious. The cheese went through about half the layer of the rice, so the bottom half of the rice stayed dry. I guess it's your part to mix the cheese around to ensure you have a properly balanced rice and cheese ratio.

For the rice that had cheese on it, the rice was good and tasty, together with the numerous slices of ham. It was better than expected. I felt that this was a better option  than a well-known chain that also offers student baked rice.

4. Seafood Cheese Baked Rice $15.90

Next I tried the seafood cheese baked rice. For the price, it's alot! Yes there's prawns and squid and what not, but $15.90? That's being a bit bold, I must say. The cheese tasted the same and the same thing with half the rice being dry. I wish they could've added more cheese to the rice, to ensure you don't end up with half a tray of plain baked rice.

For drinks each person get a syrupy drink for a top-up for $2 with any main course. You can choose from blackcurrant, blueberry, iced lemon tea, lime, honey lemon and green tea.

Check out the fun colours of our drinks! These are definitely catered to the students for sure!
tasted like ribena

tasted like ribena

The blackcurrant drink tasted like ribena to be honest! So not a bad choice for ribena lovers.

The blueberry looked cool but it was too articial for me but hey! They were a couple of real blueberries at the bottom of my drink! How cool was that? Didn't expect that at all!

Overall : A hit and miss place, good location, quick and fuss-free food.

Mookata! OK Nov 12, 2015
Categories : Thai | Mookata

Located at the end of a long stretch of busy eateries at Bugis is Mook's. It is a relatively new Thai BBQ place, that opened earlier this year. Mook’s unique moniker is a play of two words, ‘moo’ and ‘kata’, which translates to pork’s pan, setting the stage for porcine ingredients that populate its menu. An array of seafood are also available for the culinary pleasure of its patrons, where one can cook prawns with crab meat and fish balls in boiling pots of tom yum or chicken soup. Singapore has seen a growing trend of Mookata sprouting in even the smallest of coffee shops; it is one of the most popular get-together meals in Thailand and I can see why it’s getting popular in Singapore.

Mook’s Thai Mookata BBQ is just opposite Bugis Junction near the ever popular Ah Chew Desserts. Mook’s has a down-to-earth interior with wallpaper in a brick design and plenty of space aligned between tables to facilitate comfortable groups.

Mook's Thai Mookata BBQ basically only serves in sizes of 2 pax. They don't have much cooked food to offer either, so if you're very hungry, you will have to tahan! And since, tons of Groupons were sold, there was a long queue of people waiting for tables, just like us. I wish I had made a reservation!! Nonethelss, while waiting in line, I noticed the pictures of drinks on the entrance.

I couldn't tahan anymore, I was craving Thai Milk Tea and decided to order one whil waiting in line and the friendly staff auntie offered to grab me a glass of water first, while waiting who knows how long for a table. I told her, I was dying of thirst and needed my Thai Milk Tea, she laughed and hurriedly ran into the kitchen and come out with my saving grace!

Thai Milk Tea $2.90

Their Thai Milk Tea tasted exactly like what Thai Milk tea was supposed to taste, I just wished that they had put less ice. Majority of the cup is just pure ice. What a let-down, at least it tasted sweet and was milky enough to calm me down.

Lemon Grass Drink $2.90
Too diluted, once the ice melted

Too diluted, once the ice melted

Their Lemon Grass Drink was a bigger let down, as it really didn't have enough taste to it, after a while, when the ice melted, it tasted more like  a glass of iced water.

Thai Green Milk Tea $2.90
This tasted like the Thai Milk Tea with Heaven and Earth green tea. No Lie. Go try it and tell me what you think.

Set Menu 2 for 4 Pax $49.90

The food itself came in platters of assorted meats: fatty pork collar and pork belly, garlic marinated chicken thigh, flower clams, fish ball and a few pieces of the lard. In another basket was an array of cabbage, buk choy, enoki mushrooms, kang kong and tang hoon. Overall, food was alright. You can tell that the portion was made small to force bigger eaters to order more. Drinks were at a separate cost and there's no carbs avail (other than a few strands of tang hoon).

There were a choice of two soups to be poured into the moat: chicken soup or tom yum. We choose Chicken soup as I didn't take spicy. Although they placed a whole metal jug of the soup on our table, the waiters were quite attentive and helped us pour in the soup every time they noticed the supply was evaporating too quickly or when the fire was out.

I didn't know that these were pieces of pork lard, until the staff came to tell me how to oil the hot plate! So this is how you cook your food. You leave the pork lards on top, and as it is heated, the fat oils flow down and oil the rest of the hot surface, and that is how you cook your food! But I didn't really trust this method of cooking and ended up using the tongs to grab the pork lard and scrub the entire hot plate surface with the lard, to spread the oil all over. Especially for the fish slices, I didn't want them getting burnt and stuck onto the hot plate.

The meat cooked pretty quickly once they were laid out on the hot plate. The meat tasted good and they were well seasoned. I also enjoyed eating the tang hoon that was cooked in the soup with the meats. After a few seconds of throwing the meats to cook. I started to see the downfalls of this style of cooking. Because of the way the plate is designed for the pork lard oil to flow down, the meats are always sliding off and falling into the soup. I lost count of the number of uncooked, raw items that fell into the soup while being cooked.

The prawns were suprisingly fresh. After eating the prawns, we let the prawn heads in the soup and the soup was really sweet and I loved it!

A thai branded instant noodles with egg to end off my first Mookata experience at Mook's Thai Mookat BBQ.

The service here was better than expected. The staff were friendly and helpful, despite running around and trying to attend to all the customers as the restaurant was running at max capacity. As we left around 9plus, the crowd was starting to die down and the queue outside the shop disappeared.

Overall : 1) Great service 2) Okay Food if you get the groupon
