Pizza Craze! OK Jul 13, 2012
Categories : Pasta | Halal

Ordered 10 pizzas due to a large graduation party over a friend's house and the nearest was from Eng Kong Terrace. We were quite pleased with their service in being able to deliver up so quickly, but it got too a sad disappointment when we realize the ingredients were quite tough and not fresh like as if it has been placed there for quite a long time.

A regular pan 9" pizza costs $18.80 and we ate all of the regular sizes. A large one 12" would cost you $25.80.
That's the difference of having 3" inches. A stuffed crust 13" would cost $31.50.
shocked

BBQ Chicken Supreme had bit and pieces of chicken chunks, chicken rolls, pineapple chunks, green and red capsicums on tangy BBQ sauce. It wasn't that spicy as they claimed, which was relatively good so we can spam chili flakes on them smile The BBQ sauce was deliciously sweet!

Hawaiian pizza, the all-time favorite for everyone because of the ingenious idea of putting pineapples into pizzas. Now, do pineapples really come from Hawaii? tongue Anyway, another sweet-tasting dish makes me wonder if this pizza dough is meant for sweetness as it was quite thick. One would feel full after you have eaten two slices. Thankfully we ate small portions and get to try one of each!

This is a special pizza that is made Singaporean-styled, with beef pieces topped with green and red chili. Indeed an exceptional combination of spices that does not taste very spicy, I felt they could use a variety of ingredients though, it was rather dry for this pizza.

Meat galore for the carnivores! lol They probably baked this pizza for quite long because there was a slight sour smell to the meat, it was a little dry too. I guess it does not look as appetizing as you see from those pizza hut advertisements, it's like the ingredients are not well-spread out.

Ocean catch! Indeed something different from the usual grounded beef. Shrimps, squids, tunas, crabstick and diced tomatoes on a cool lime mayonnaise base sauce, this pizza makes you feel like the ocean is in your mouth, so don't be surprised if you are mouth-watering because of the overflowing goodness of the ocean catch smile

Super supreme is one of the chef's recommendations. With a variety of ingredients, you can never get bored of this pizza! In fact I feasted alone on this before. Made with Ground beef, cabanossi sausages, beef pepperoni, chicken ham, capsicums, onions, olives, mushrooms and pineapple chunks, it is the best-one-yet-from-pizza-hut on this new york crust. I wish they would made more choices of choosing the crust available, more specialized and customized you see.

Last but not least, we got one with a thousand island dressing which was made in such a way that tasted disgusting. Tomatoes, lettuce, ground beef, cheese, tomato sauce, i had no idea what i was eating. Had to forced myself to gobble the rest of the slice when I had this.

Bangkok Jam – as the name says it – cooks up Thai-inspired dishes that appear mouth-watering on the menu. Prices here are largely extravagant but the portions here are tiny. We couldn’t pass any verdict without reading the impressions from the reviews we had viewed online, which mainly skewed towards the ‘not recommended’.mad

And I must say before you read any further, their service is better than good. Greeted by warm-hearted people, I kind of enjoy the atmosphere here.lol

For starter, we had a Pomelo Salad with Shrimp ($9.90).bowl Topped with cashew nuts sprinkled with a sweet lemon zest sauce, this pomelo salad is a refreshing starter that opens up our appetite. The portion was so small even though we expected it to be a large plate from the picture, and I think it is fairly overpriced for such a small dish. sad

We also ordered the Fried Chicken Wings with Fish Sauce Marinate ($8.90), and it was a letdown because we can’t taste the fish sauce marinate. In fact, it was quite weird because we were thinking don’t people dislike the smell of fishes? Why add a fish sauce marinate into the fried chicken wings? We gave some better name suggestions like ‘Golden Roasted Thai Wings’ which would definitely sound more attractive, I guess this sauce should be a secret recipe but we’re not sure whether they meant the sweet chilli or not. Confusing.shocked

One of my friends had this, which I believe is Fish N’ Chips (can’t remember the exact name). Kind of strange to find western food in a Thai cuisine place, but it turns out that when you sink your teeth into the soft white flesh it appears quite delicious to eat as well! However, the chips was a sloppy chunk of moist potato slices that have been left exposed to the air too long and tasted like dry mashed potato. Absolutely weird.mad

We also had the red curry chic ken with rice and the green curry chicken with rice that both cost $11.50 each. Was there any distinguished taste? I think the portions is too small to satisfy. sadWith a palm-sized ball of rice and barely any meat in the curry, I thought that it would be better if this was served with prata or as a snack instead. The red curry was better because it was less oily but I thought the green curry was more fragrant and at least had more vegetables in it.

We didn’t order any Thai iced teas, they serve water for free on Bangkok Jam coasters, which I presume that is why the cost of the food was more high-end because they’re spending on unnecessary decorations to touch up the place like this.chopstick

I’m a fan of Thai food but I just felt that this was just not the one and improvements must be made. Therefore we all agreed that we do not recommend this as well, and I personally felt that they should have a feedback form so that we could give them our thoughts.smile

Moi Lum restaurant is unbelievably popular! As my mother is the birthday girl for the day, she decided to pick her favourite Cantonese cuisine hangout at Moi Lum in Tanjong pagar, a stop away from our place, and it was quite empty at 11.50am sharp on a weekday that I wondered why she had to make a reservation.

The staff, which was mostly made up of senior citizens, had quite good service that I felt it was over-friendly. All eyes were on our table like an eaglehawk waiting to swoop down to serve us before we even raised our hand to signal them to come over. We had to tell a few of the staff for a few times that we were still deciding. smile

We ordered quite a few dishes because there was a groupon voucher which my mother had bought, $40 for $80 worth of food. Because of the huge value that we have, we decided to try the best specialities in the house! lol

We ordered a majestic roast chicken (small $14) and it was REALLY MAJESTIC, living up to the name. With slightly crisp skin and a juicy tender roasted taste in the middle of the white chicken, this chunk of meat goes really well with the chilli sauce that I believe was made in-house! You can see the chicken is fried slightly to a crisp golden brown, giving off its fragrance through the golden browncolors. mad

We also ordered the scallop in yam basket, a unique dish that I seldom see (small $14). The waitress sliced the yam basket in front of us in equal portions and I could smell the fragrant from a distance. Topped with vegetables, the scallop gives off a delightful flavour balancing the taste with the yam, which was coasted with a layer of crispy thin flake! lol

We also had chilli kangkong, which was not as good because the vegetable did not taste as fresh. I would personally not recommend this dish as it was not one of the favourites or chef’s recommendations but my mother wanted it so we had to give in to the birthday girl! lol

The claypot stew beef (small $15) was really delicious! It was the first dish to arrive and we thought we could just eat this dish with rice and forego the rest. bowl The other dishes were served pretty quickly too and we were quite surprised and their fast and efficient service. Made with tender beef slices, it was delectably generous alongside with beef meatball and a generous portion of vegetables. A highly recommended dish if you’re a fan of beef. lollol

We had a ice-cream with mango sauce for dessert and it was not as tasty as you see in the picture. It was a battle of sour versus sweetness of the mango, which gives off a weird funny taste and our family passed the verdict that Moi Lum doesn’t fare well in desserts.

Oh, and the restaurant quickly filled up with executives from offices nearby and it was full-house before it hit 12.45pm. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal and my family and I were quite pleased that the toilet was quite clean, and the air-conditioners were also dust-free. It is rare to find a modern restaurant served with traditional Cantonese cuisine and this is indeed a gem!

I’m not a French connoisseur but when it comes to having a classic dining experience with regional French savory (e.g pastries and confectionery), Antoinette is a fine place to go. A crowded place with strangely quiet ambience, Antoinette has selected beautiful wallpaper with French-like furniture that goes along with the carpeting and lightings, topped with fresh flowers so delicately beautiful. lol

I greatly applaud them for their attention-to-detail in bringing across the excellent French atmosphere, and sadly the only thing that is lacking is an outdoor platform where the customers can people-watch or sky-gaze, just like they do in France. smile

We were handed over one of the most huge menu board I’ve ever seen, Menu A La Carte.

We ordered an All-day breakfast of egg with smoked duck breast, served with sautéed mushroom & herbs, homemade Pain de Mie toast and salad with house dressing costing $15.00.

I was really pleased with the way they lay the food out, definitely takes fine culinary skills to keep the dish warm yet presentable. lol

We also had a Concorde (costing $20.50) which consists of Roasted chicken with bacon and creamy morel mushroom sauce served on the side. We were really paying for the quality of the food, the roasted chicken was juicy inside and totally unlike the dry chicken that you sometimes eat where you have to drink a lot of tea to cover the after-taste. The bacon was not as fatty and the mushroom made me felt like I was on cloud nine. The concorde presents to me a heavenly tasting experience and exceeded my expectations.

For deserts, we ordered Antoinette, an earl grey ice-cream with raspberry jelly and milk chocolate shards (Cost $9.00), a Café Latte ($6.00), and Brittany (a type of macaroon) ($5.00). I thought I was in paradise with my main course, but Antoinette brought me to a higher place than ever, no one can ever replicate that taste that I have in my taste buds. It has surely topped my favourite desert list! I love the intricate heart-shaped design that they did on my Café Latte, it was kind of disappointing that the milk was not as warm as I thought thus the foam formed bubbles pretty quickly and wasn’t nice to chew on.

I think the service was okay, I expected something more like a warm greeting or a smile or a great farewell but it was kind of ordinary. I won’t say I’d come back again due to the pricey food but I would visit once in awhile on special occasions. It’s the place where all women would love their men to bring them to, I’m sure. tongue

Great Family Lunch in Royal China Smile Jun 20, 2012

Categories : Cantonese/Hong Kong | Chinese | Hotel | Dim Sum | Seafood

Father’s Day is perfect because dad is here with us, and to add a little extra bonus, it’s because we get to eat great ‘Imperial’ food with daddy! Mum made a reservation at Royal China at Raffles Hotel. It had this tinge of blue so sweet and calming, and my brother calls it the colour of ‘Tiffany & Co.’. The restaurant had its table setting placed so far apart, it was really spacious and out-of-the-norm where I believe the owners have carefully thought over what is the best seating plan. At the far side of the restaurant hangs a huge wide mirror that livens up the restaurant and making it look really spacious. I love the white chairs and the sweet tiffany blue curtains that drape over the cozy little restaurant.

This is definitely the BEST Har Gao (Steamed Prawn Dumpling) I ever had!Costing only $4.80, the freshness and juiciness of the prawn is simply mind-blowing. The translucent skin wraps the juiciness that it just tasted like I was eating a bomb of exciting flavours bursting in my mouth. The best thing is that the skin is not as sticky as most prawn dumplings usually are so it doesn’t stick to the paper (and therefore you won’t waste any of it!).

The porridge had a smooth texture that was easy to chew on, and it was neither bland nor too salty. The crunchiness of the biscuit added in is something rarely added into porridge, but it makes a lot of difference to having a uniquely Royal China porridge and those that are of outside.

The Siew Mai (Steam Minced Pork Dumpling) is really different from what we usually eat outside. Costing $4.80 as well, this is made up of lean meat which I found it more difficult to chew. According to my mother, it’s because other restaurants or dim sum places use fat pork rather than lean meat. Interestingly, this siew mai does not have a porky taste and it is sandwiched in between prawns. I didn’t really enjoy this healthier choice of my siew mai but my whole family have differing opinions of it.

The Cha Siu Bao (Barbecued Pork Bun), which costs $3.60, is my favourite dish. There was this sweet fragrance in the slightly thick but soft bread. Usually I would like to empty the contents of cha shao in the bread because it taste kind of disgustingly sweet and a mash-up of meat, but this pork bun had a perfect combination of its sweet meat, something that I was not usually used to. Most of the times, we Chinese would eat the bun sipping a cup of tea because it’d be too dry, but because of the juicy filling in the bun I didn’t had to do that.

My mother’s favourite was the Steamed Custard Bun. This $4 buns are really the killer. I had to squeeze the custard with egg yolk out into the plate because of the over-sweetness (I don’t have that kind of sweet tooth). My mother really enjoyed it though! I’ve heard that it’s a dish popular with the older generation because it’ll trigger their taste buds. Eating one bun alone made us felt really full, there is this dialect which we called ‘gao-wei’ (eat to the point where we felt it tasted disgusting). So if you’re ordering this, I think it’d be great if you can share a bun with two people.

The Steamed Layer Cake with Salted Egg Yolk is something unique that we’ve not tried or seen anywhere before. It cost ($4) and felt like eating bread with kaya with a bit of saltiness in it. Light and fluffy, it was kind of dry so we didn’t finish it. We passed a verdict into not ordering it again.

The best dish in Royal China? The freshly made, soft, smooth and silky rice roll! With generous fillings and sweet soy sauce (perfect blend of sweetness and saltiness), I won’t be surprised to see you drooling. We tried the Barbecued Pork Cheung Fun ($4.80) and Fresh Prawn Cheung Fun ($4.80).

We had two desserts as well, the herbal jelly ($5) which was really bitter and we spammed honey sauce (practically poured the whole jar of it) and also the black sesame mochi ($4). I really love the black sesame mochi, it's something so unique, a warm hot dish rather than cold dish that you expect mochi to be.

I really love to see the enthusiastic 'aunties' in Royal China serving us, they just represent the Chinese as hardworking and lovable and serious at work. I think they could put on better uniforms though, the light brown uniform really doesn't fit in the royal ambience because it looks like brown cheongsum bought cheaply.

All in all, it was a delightful experience with family and we really enjoyed it smile
