Categories : Singaporean Chinese | Hawker Centre | Noodles

Hopefully this store wouldn't close down.. Lor Mee is one of the popular food among Singaporean chinese, but hawker food seems to be a dying trade. Anyway, Feng Zhen lor mee pays homage to the dishes of yore.

They have changed the usual green plates to flowery plates.. the Lor Mee (SGD3.00) is quite impressive, although the ambience may not be comfortable at all. The sauce was not all too starchy and they are generous with their ingredients.. the vinegar actually covers their braised taste.

I ordered the mixed ingredients (meatball, ngoh hiang and fish)! You can make special request if you want.

Categories : Japanese | Pasta | Ramen

Located near the escalator lies a popular well-litted restaurant called 'Waraku'. Located at the same mall as 'Pasta de Waraku', Waraku focuses on a variety of Japanese cuisine instead of pasta alone.

The view from the restaurant is really beautiful. You can chill out watching the boats on Singapore River. The tranquil setting is really relaxing.

This is how the restaurant looks like (you can't view it when you're outside). I love the privacy we can get, away from passersby who may be curious to know what we are eating.

Agedashi Tofu - SGD4.80
For starter, it is a must-try to get Waraku's Agedashi Tofu. Soft on the inside and gooey on the outside, it has flakes on the top and I love the tofu soaked with the sauce.

Do eat it quickly because it becomes soggy after awhile.

Potato Mentai - SGD9.80
This potato mental has a really oily sheen and strong buttery taste. Waraku is really generous with their cheese, making sure every bit of potato is covered with delicious sticky cheese! The cheesy blend is definitely worth the calories... just walk up and down the Singapore River to shed off the fats.

It's a portion large enough to be shared among two people!

We also ordered a bowl of Shoyu Ramen (SGD10.80).. it tasted great without any ingredients. There was a slight hint of soya bean, which isn't too surprising because most Japanese uses soya bean for their soup base. The ramen was really bouncy and I loved twirling it before chewing on the springy texture.

Katsu Curry Don - SGD10.80
The Katsu Curry Don was too heavy for any person. I wasn't used to the ultra thick Japanese curry sauce, and the Katsu was quite a small portion. The japanese rice on the other hand, was fluffy and moist! Do mix it well if you want an even taste, because the rice at the bottom tasted quite plain without curry. The chicken was really fresh and had a slightly pink texture.

How's their service?
Apart from friendly staff, I would have to confess that it may be rather slow when the restaurant was very crowded with business people. DO be patient with them and try to go early if you want to avoid waiting.

Recommended Tips for OpenRicers
1. If you go in the afternoon, the staff would put down the blinds. If you are sitting at the window seat and desire to watch the view outside, just simply ask them so!
2. It is very difficult to ask them to refill your cup of green tea, so just forget about getting that because it tasted quite diluted.
3. Do order some starter to accompany your main. Waraku does sell really delicious starter and appetisers !

Recommended Dish(es):  Agedashi tofu,potato mentai

Spending per head: Approximately $16(Lunch)

Ma Maison has opened a Tonkatsu Bistro in Westgate, and everyone who has dined there would certainly agree that it feels just like stepping into a restaurant in Japan. You can look forward to delicious Japanese food with a truly authentic Japanese ambience. Like at the outlet at Mandarin Gallery, tables quickly fill up from 6.30pm, so do get in early or be prepared to wait.

From the manager to the waiters to the chefs, I could not tell if they were actually Singaporeans. Speaking in Japanese, the chef would respond "はい (Hai – Yes)" to every order. In fact, they have a Japanese accent when they speak. Yet, when they took our orders in English, it was quite obvious that they were Singaporeans. I was amazed at how they could mimic the Japanese so well.

The dining experience really made me feel like I was in Japan.

All mains include unlimited fresh cabbage, unlimited rice (choose between White, Japanese or Multi-grain rice), unlimited miso soup and unlimited roasted Japanese barley drink.

Miso Rosu Katsu Set – SGD23.80
The pork was juicy with a delightfully crunchy coating. The miso sauce initially came across as quite salty, but after getting used to the taste, it reminded me of Marmite. The meat used was less fatty as compared to the pork loin, but combining miso with katsu was truly an ingenious masterstroke

Rosu Katsu Set – SGD21.80
I shared this deep fried pork loin (150g) with my father and we ordered an extra rice/barley/miso soup/cabbage set (SGD4.50++). It was the freshest pork I have ever tasted. As you sink your teeth into the juicy meat, there is a satisfying crunch in every bite. The best part is that the katsu does not feel oily at all!

The Japanese are very organised, even in the presentation of their sauces. You have to put the sauce according to the labelling, which refers to sweet (left), spicy (centre) and salt (right).

There is also many condiments for you to choose from, and if you are not sure what each one is for, the friendly crew is more than willing to help you! However, it may be difficult to get their attention during peak hours from 6.30pm - 8.30 pm.

I would recommend going for the multi-grain rice as there are kidney beans in it. The miso soup that came with the set was so delicious that I could not resist helping myself to numerous refills. It was indeed no ordinary miso soup, as there were bits and pieces of meat, carrot and vegetables.

Some recommendations and tips
I would recommend OpenRicers to get the Rosu katsu set with the multi-grained ricebowl set. The one with the Miso was quite salty and I thought it may not be unnecessary since they have provided a lot of other sauces to go along with the meat! You are advised to go as early as possible because you may spot a long queue. They provide Japanese Barley rice tea and it is refillable. Their soup, rice and drink are all refillable, so you may want to skip a meal on that day in order to make full use of this deal! smile

Moved by their sweetness. Smile Jan 31, 2014

The Sweet Movement sits in a cozy little corner of Somme Road, a stone's throw away from City Square mall. It is under the same flagship of D.C Bakery (or Dessert Cup Bakery from Raffles City). They now serve petite bite-sized desserts accompanying great coffee, and the serene atmosphere and environment makes The Sweet Movement a great option for a lazy afternoon read. This hole-in-the-wall dessert cafe is a one-stop dessert haven to satiate my hunger pangs for sugar cravings... and I thought it may an ideal party place or even for business meetings!

From time to time, they will change their decorations with sweet little notes. These quirky notes are usually quotes that would provoke your thoughts, providing inspiration if you need any.

Do note that these bite-sized pieces are not actual sizes as it was for their pre-launch event. Do visit their Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/TheSweetMovement?directed_target_id=0 for more details! smile You can also message their Facebook admin, although they do take quite awhile to reply because they are rather busy with managing both The Sweet Movement and Dessert Cup Bakery.
Still, I love the service in the place as the staff is very friendly and smiley.

Vanilla Milk Jam - SGD2.80 ea, SGD10 for 4 pcs
This is a delicious crispy toast topped with their homemade vanilla milk jam. It is rich in flavour and sweet at all sides! The vanilla was strong and fragrant to my tasting, I felt like I was eating crispy vanilla ice-cream.

Milk Caramel Jam - SGD2.80 ea, SGD10 for 4 pcs
Similar to the vanilla jam, a daub of caramel is added to the toast. It was a tad too sweet for me, but my friends loved it! It was as crunchy as potato chips and I think it'll make a great replacement for popcorn in the movie theatres.

Left: Nutty Seasalt Caramel; Center & Left: White Chocolate muffins - SGD3.50
Forget about molten gooey lava cakes. The muffins that The Sweet Movement delivers is a perfect decadent dessert! I just can't help but want more and more. This isn't the creamy sort of paste, but it sticks true in making their muffin base the focus. The decorations are just a bonus, but the warm moist texture is really fresh as they bake it fresh daily!

The coffee has a strong aroma and is very rich. I think it's quite a strong fix which may leave me a sleepless night if I drank it too late. The froth sits perfectly on the coffee essence, and they are quite good at their latte art too!

I would prefer their latte as compared to their cappuccino because of the rich smooth finish made by the coffee. The cappuccino, as expected, was too frothy to my liking! It'll make a lovely drink for OpenRicers who desire a creamy drink.

The following are their standard muffins with various designs. Each muffin costs SGD3.50, which is the market price of most muffins in the desserts industry.

I thought all was equally tasty, but if I were to make a choice, I would choose the flower. This is because of their additional white chocolate... though the rest tasted quite similar too! I love the moist base, and I could eat all 4 of them in one go. It's highly addictive, these desserts, mind you!

If you're heading to The Sweet Movement, don't forget the following:
1. Bring your camera, they have cute looking desserts and the lighting is quite good to take pictures.
2. Bring a book for a lazy afternoon off the urban district.
3. Bring lots of water and get yourself hydrated from the desserts and coffee!
4. Bring an umbrella in case it rains. This is because even though the cafe is sheltered, you may be drenched if the wind blows!

I'm now under sogurt's loyalty programme with their coupon card. Get a stamp for every $5 that you spend, and you will get discounts.. $1, $2, or $3. When you bought at least 30 cups of $5, you'll get a FREE membership.

Anyway, it's easy to hit $5 with sogurt because you can't really tell how much the cup weighs until you go to the counter. their original yoghurt is always the best, i love eating it without any toppings for health's sake! there are usually adorable ladies for the counter crew as well smile you'll have a lovely time in the restaurant especially when out with friends! smile try to wear more clothing when you go there because the store is usually freezing cold.
