Japanese dinner Smile Apr 27, 2012

Suppose to have some western food but I was craving for chawanmushi and fresh slamon. So I, somehow, convinced my dining partner to go for Japanese food instead. He suggested Sushi Tei at Raffles City. My first time in the restaurant and I quite like the ambiance. Was given a table on the inside but I requested for counter seat (just to be near the sushi belt). The service crew was nice enough to change the seats for us.

My first order was the chawanmushi. I can't say that this is the best because I still prefer the one at Sakae Sushi. But it came quite close. The salmon was really fresh! However, the sushi chef sliced it abit too thick. I prefer my salmon probably 1/4 thinner. The rest are other sushi that we had. Wasn't too hungry so I didn't eat alot. My partner ate more.

Crabs galore Smile Apr 27, 2012

It had been some time since I last had crabs. Since a friend is organizing a crab feasting gathering and need people to make up the number, I jumped at the opportunity. There were 14 of us, so we are able to try 8 different kind of cooking style. We had no other dishes except crabs.
Chilli crab

Chilli crab

The first dish to arrive at our table is the chilli crab. You have to remember that Kar Pin does not provide those little man tou you used to dip into chilli crab, so you have to bring your own man tou or bread. The sauce is nice but chilli crab is not my favorite.
Black pepper crab

Next up, we have the black pepper crab. I must say that this is my favorite of the night. The spiciness of the black pepper is deliciously hot but not to the extend that you need to gulp down gallons of water.
Butter crab

The butter crab tasted nice too. Only problem is that the shell cracks too easily. I kept biting into bits of shell when I was savoring the meat.
Steam crab

Steam crab

The eggs in the steam crab is yummy. There seems to be rice wine added to the egg. Not alot was added so you definitely won't get drunk.
Spring onion and ginger crab

Didn't like this at all. Took the shell and abit of spring onion. The sauce is too sweet for me and it tasted weird. Not to my liking.
Curry leaf crab

Didn't really try this because I was waiting for my salted egg yolk crab.
Salted egg yolk crab

Salted egg yolk crab

This was supposedly the best dish for the night because of pass experience. But for some reason, the standard for this dish seems to have dropped. The salted egg yolk wasn't as much as before and the taste seems to lack abit.
Crab beehoon

Crab beehoon

After 7 types of crab, we were too full to finish the beehoon. Only took a spoonful and it was not too bad. However, I think it would have tasted better if we ate it hot.

The environment wasn't too ideal this time round. It was raining before we arrived so when night fall and the lights are on....flies started circling around our table and on our table. The owner had to switch off some of the lights on top of us to deter those insects from disturbing our meals.

Since there were 14 of us, each of us only had to pay $37 for crabs cooked in 8 different style.

Swedish breaky OK Apr 26, 2012

I'm not really a morning person so you will hardly see me post much reviews on breakfast. This is one very rare occasion where mum was able to drag me up to go shopping with her at Ikea. She raved about the breakfast and I thought there's no harm trying. I have to stress that we were there around 9.30am so there isn't alot of food left. Mine was the last second set. Not really the best. The croissant was tasteless and cold, the egg was a little too soggy. Took one bite at the hashbrown and set it aside. The only thing I quite like is the ham. It's cold but the most edible food on the plate. Wouldn't want to try this the next time I come....will try something else. Their lunch is good though.

Penang Laksa Smile Apr 09, 2012

Seriously, there isn't many places in Singapore that sells penang laksa so I was extremely thrilled to be able to find one in the heartlands. Not the best but I find that they had just the right amount of sourness and spiciness (you got to add the chilli padi yourself). Would taste better if they have added more prawn paste. The fish bits in the bowl was a tad too little as well. But bearing in mind that I wasn't able to find much good penang laksa around, this is definitely good enough for me.

Scrolling through the shops at Vivo and me being forever the "not so hungry" one,we decided to go for something light. Light to me would probably be soup and something else. As I am a great fan of Tom Yam soup, we found just the right place for it. As usual, I asked for window seat.

My partner ordered the phad thai fried noodles with prawns and ice lemon tea. Didn't try as I was too full. So can't comment on it.

I ordered the clear tom yam prawn soup. Didn't like milk of any form to spoil the taste of my tom yam so I went for the clear soup. Moreover, this is what I normally have in Bangkok. The soup is REALLY spicy! Proceed with caution! The prawn is quite fresh...doesn't give you the stale soggy feeling. I ordered the lemon grass drink. Smell and taste exactly like the lemon grass essence you put inside the aroma therapy burner. Very different from what I had in Bangkok. Totally not worth the $5. On the whole, it was ok. We paid for the ambiance, not the food because the food itself wasn't that spectacular.

The both of us spent about $40 for the dinner.
