NEW! Fish donuts!  Smile Feb 13, 2012

I first had the fish donuts from KFC in Malaysia and really enjoyed it there so I was thrilled to see that it has come to Singapore too. As the name suggests, its fish in the same of a donut. The fish is similar to the fish 'ole KFC had. Its moist and soft. It wasn't overly oily neither did it carry a heavy flour taste. It tasted very fishy and I really liked it.

I bought the ala carte which costs $4 for 6 fish donuts. Alternatively, you can buy the snacker box, which costs $3.95 and consists of 4 fish donuts, 1 small drink and fries. Perfect for a lunch. Recommended! smile

Custard & Peanut Bun Smile Feb 12, 2012
Categories : Dim Sum | Noodles

I dine at Mayim regularly and the manager had actually recommended me the baked custard and peanut sauce bun today. I've never tried it before and it seems like this is one of the items on the "customers' favourite" menu.

It was served freshly out of the oven and had a nice peanut smell to it. The outer layer of the baked bun is very thin and crispy. I loved the peanut sauce on the top layer. The crust is very soft and powdery. While it looked like it'd be very dry b/c of the peanut, it was actually relatively moist. The inner layer of the bun is baked custard which was very sweet.

Overall, I really liked it and would be having it again soon. The minimum order for this baked bun is 2 pieces and each piece costs only $1.40. Its pretty big and filling so it'd be a good idea to share one order with someone else.

Spending per head: Approximately $2.80(Lunch)

Chicken Caesar pizza Smile Feb 11, 2012   (Related Review)

Decided to share a pizza with a friend. We ordered for the Chicken Caesar PIzza, which consists of roasted chicken strips, bacon bits, onions, mozzarella cheese, caesar dressing and tomato sauce.

I liked the combination of ingredients for the pizza and the toppings were well spread out. The chicken were well roasted but slightly salty. The onions give the pizza a refreshing taste and its all in big pieces so it'll be easy for people who doesn't like it to pick it out. I loved the caesar dressing. It was actually my first time having caesar dressing along with a pizza. Goes well with it perfectly. Everything was good but I'd really prefer for there to be more and stronger cheese taste.

Overall, it was delicious and filling for both of us. Costed us only $14.90 for the regular sized pizza.

Teriyaki Chicken Don Smile Feb 06, 2012   (Related Review)

Decided to have just a rice bowl instead of a bento for lunch instead so I ordered for the Chicken Teriyaki Don. The teriyaki chicken don is a rice bowl topped off with chicken teriyaki and vegetables with a side of miso soup.

The skin of the teriyaki chicken is unexpectedly crispy and the teriyaki sauce is very sweet. Additionally, the sesame seeds give the chicken a nice sesame smell. The chicken itself is juicy and there's no excess oil.

The rice is Japanese rice and while the bowl does seem small, Ichiban Sushi is very generous and the rice bowl was compacted with rice. Extremely filling. The miso soup is relatively sweet and tastes like miso. No worries about it being too bland.

It costs only $9.90 and is very filling for one person. Definitely the better choice as compared to their set meals if you're looking for a one person serving item in Ichiban Sushi.

Spending per head: Approximately $9.90

Spicy tonkotsu ramen Smile Feb 06, 2012   (Related Review)

Categories : Japanese | Ramen

I've always liked Men-ichi's fried egg so I decided to try their fried egg ramen. The fried egg has crab meat and mushroom in it. The mushrooms give the egg a fresh smell but doesn't overpower the overall taste. The insides of the egg is supposed to be soft and not as cooked but I think the soup cooked the insides of it too.

Noodles wise, Men-ichi has usual, doesn't lose out to other ramen restaurants. Noodles were well-cooked and bouncy. I have had the Tonkotsu soup from Men-ichi before but never the spicy version. The tonkotsu soup is very concentrated and sweet. It was indeed spicy but bearable kind of spiciness. However, the chilli did overpower the taste of tonkotsu soup.

Overall, it was tasty but I got sick of it slightly because all there was to eat with the noodles is the egg. No vegetables or eggs to go with it.

It costs $11.90 and you can upsize the noodles to 20% more (in quantity) for free.
