Tasteless Lor Mee Cry Aug 23, 2012
Categories : Singaporean | Food Court | Porridge/Congee | Brunch

Bought Lor Mee from this stall for lunch. I requested for no vinegar, which probably was a big mistake. The soup has no taste at all. Most diners probably rely on the vinegar to give it some flavouring. The noodles wasn't too bad though. It didn't have the "yellow noodles smell" which I absolutely dislike. The meat, egg, etc. are all pretty average with no uniqueness at all. Overall, it was like eating noodles in coloured (stickier) water. Definitely will not try it again.

Price: $3.80

Char-siew don Smile Aug 23, 2012
Categories : Japanese | Ramen

The Menichi outlet at Jurong Point changed its menu recently and one of the new food item was this char-siew don. Its basically barbecued pork on Japanese rice topped off with vegetables.

I really liked the barbecued pork. It is not oily at all and it isn't too dry. In addition, the barbecued pork goes well with the sauce they used, which is sweet and something similar to teriyaki sauce. As usual, Menichi uses Japanese rice, which is very filling and I personally like the taste of the rice.

Overall, it was very filling and tasty. I've had it several times already and I would totally recommend it to my friends and family.

Student meal - Oyakodon  Smile Aug 23, 2012
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Japanese | Café

This was my first trip to Singapore's AKB48 Cafe. I ordered for the student meal - Oyakodon. Its a rice bowl with chicken, egg and onion. The egg is somewhat half-cooked, the way I like it. The rice bowl is topped off with a sweet-salty sauce. It was slightly too salty near the end. It also comes with a salad and some pickles. The salad has a unique sauce that tasted something like onion. I didn't like it but my friends did so its probably based on personal preference.

Overall, the food is pretty average and so was the service. The cafe has limited staff and staff does not take initiative. However, as a fan of Japanese music, I enjoyed my dining experience there. For those who don't know, AKB48 is a Japanese girl idol group. The cafe has various photos and signatures of the female idols. Also, there is a small section that sells goods of the idol group (eg: T-shirts, posters).

It cost me only $7.80 for the meal. I would recommend it to anyone who's interested in Japanese idol groups but do note that the cafe's food isn't really its best selling point.

Teriyaki Chicken Pasta Smile Mar 17, 2012

Categories : Pasta | Steaks and Grills

On the way to Plaza Sing I was given a Hot Tomato's promotion flyer. The restaurant was having a weekday promotion that's only $9.50 (inclusive of GST and service charge) for a main dish and free flow of ice lemon tea. There are three main dishes to choose from and Teriyaki Chicken Pasta was one of them.

The pasta was well-cooked and the amount of sauce they used for the pasta wasn't too much or too little. I'm not too sure what sauce it was, but it wasn't the regular tomato sauce or white sauce. It tastes a little sweet and goes well with the pasta.

The teriyaki chicken was average, just like any other teriyaki chicken served in other restaurants. Its moist and the teriyaki sauce is relatively sweet. Obviously it was a simple dish but it was pretty tasty for the price of $9.50. Only complaint is they could have given more pasta. It wasn't too filling in the end and I filled myself up with the free flow ice lemon tea.

Overall, it was a good meal and I wouldn't mind going back for the promotion for the other 2 dishes.

Pork Wonton Smile Mar 04, 2012   (Related Review)
Categories : Dim Sum | Noodles

Mayim has a relatively wide range of appetiser and the pork and vegetable wonton is one of them. It is served with the restaurant's sweet and spicy sauce and costs $5. The wontons are filled generously with moist soft pork which is wrapped with a thin layer of the skin. The skin has a light sweetness to it and the way the wonton was wrapped helps retain the sauce on its skin. The sweet and spicy sauce, as the name suggests, is sweet and spicy. However, it isn't too spicy and carries the special taste that's in most of the sauces Mayim makes. The only downside to the appetiser was the amount of oil in the sauce. It was too oily and I had to "drain" it out. Other than the oiliness, it was delicious and worth the money. Would definitely have it again next time I'm craving for wontons!
