Located in the ulu ulu part of Singapore, I am surprise to find a restaurant serving Japanese Buffet in the seletar area. The place is a bit difficult to find and the nearest bus stop is quite far away. The staff has kindly directed us to the restaurant through the phone. But once we find it, we are so busy taking photos of the various planes at the runway next to the building. The place is so windy and quiet, which makes one relax easily.
The Restaurant

The Restaurant

The restaurant is located at the first floor, right at the end. There is both indoor and outdoor dining area. The indoor dine in area is split into 2 rooms, one in the room serving sushi and sashimi, and the other room serves the rest of the food. The latter room has 2 booth seat tables and seats about 8 persons, while the first room is a combination of booth seat, sofa by the wall, with also some tables in the middle and seats about 30. But I think sitting outdoor will be better as one will be able to see planes fly by while dining.

We are showed to a table at the first room which has a bright and wooden look.

Hotpot

A hotpot with stock is placed at the table.

Clips with table number

There is also a bowl of clips with table number on them, on the table. When ordering dishes at the counter, please clips the clips on the name of dish at the signs hanging at the counter.

For Japanese Buffet Dinner,
it costs $39.90 for an adult and $16.90 for a child during weekend,
it costs $36.90 for an adult and $14.90 for a child during Monday to Thursday.
( Note that there is no GST or service charge here).

At the sashimi and sushi counter, there is order to make maki, sushi and salmon sashimi. There is also Edamame Soy Beans, octopus and marinated seaweed available at the counter too.

Next station is a buffet spead of items for the hot pot such as Abalone mushrooms, Golden mushrooms, Shitake mushrooms, cabbage, bai cai, carrot slices, sweet potato slices, fish cakes, prawns and fish slices. The hotpot base looks plain but tastes great especially after adding all the items.

This is followed by the assorted spread of condiments for dipping sauce for hot pot. There is minced radish, minced ginger, minced garlic, chilli slices, pozu sauce, sesame sauce, chilli sauce, soya sauce, and chopped spring onion. I have great fun making my version of dipping sauce.

Next the DIY tea section with a airpot and a great selection of tea bags (White, Earle Grey, Mint, Ginger and Green). This is followed by a selection of drinks such as Fruit Punch and Iced Tea for its cold bevarges section. The ginger tea is quite a great choice after the meal, especially when I am feeling quite cold after the meal. It also calms my stomach.

Next is the open concepted kitchen which served order to make Teppanyaki beef steak, pork, chicken, saba, mixed vegetables. The chicken is sliced very thinly and tastes very tender. The vegetables is well cooked and flavourful. The beef is a bit difficult to chew.

One also can place order for the raw meat to be cooked in hotpot at this counter.

The counter also served Chawanmushi (Steamed Egg), Ramen, Chahan ( Fried Rice), Age Gyoza (Fried Dumpling), Teba Saki (chicken wing), Tori Karrage(Fried Chicken), Yakitori (Grilled Chicken Stick), and Tsukune (Grilled chicken ball stick). The chawanmushi is light and smooth. The yakitori with the crunchy leek is juicy, as well as the meatball stick.

Laslty is the cold display shelf for dessert. There is various cups of jelly (Mango Pudding, Grape Pudding, Pineapple Jelly) and mini cakes (Cheesecake, Orange Mousse, Strawberry Mousse) available on the shelves. I like the jelly which is not too sweet.

Overall the food is not bad. The place has a quite cozy and warm feel. The staffs are quite friendly and cutlery are cleared swift and smooth. As the place is quite small, do remember to make a reservation before coming in to dine. There is also Japanese buffet Lunch available and costs $15.90/ adult and $9.90/ child on weekday.

Crowded Place for food OK Jun 02, 2014

The Cafe

The Cafe

The cafe is located one end of Duxton Road, with a rather plain looking brown door. Inside it is very crowded and noisy. Although there is only 2 of us, we are asked to leave our number should there be a table available and estimated waiting time is 30 minutes. Oh my god, I am thinking that should we just leave for the next nearest cafe. But we are lucky to get a table after a short wait.
Dine in area

Dine in area

The place is quite hot, even when there is extra air coolers been turned on. Tables are placed quite near to each other and I could barely get into my seat which is by the wall.

Pay as you place your order at the counter. Cashs and NETS (for payments above $10) are accepted here.

number stand & bottled water

A number stand will be given to you after payment. Remember to help yourself to the bottled water at the side of the counter.

Buttermilk Waffles with New Zealand Natural premium vanilla ice cream and butter rum bananas ($14)
The waffle is not quite crispy but still fluffy and tastes of hint of cinnamon powder. I could barely tastes of hint of rum in the banana.

8 Hour Pulled Pork (S$15)
sandwich with house BBQ sauce and carrot and coriander
Feel that the pork tastes a bit dry.

Yoghurt, Vanilla bean, Honey Smoothies ($6)
Served in a small glass, it is very thick and smooth but I could not taste the vanilla bean in it.

Daily Iced Tea ($6)
It looks likes a glass of water with lots of ice cubes and a slice of lemon in it. Does not look or taste like tea.

Deluxe Granola ($8)
homemade granola with rolled oats, almonds, cranberries, hazelnuts with greek yoghurt & honey
Again here I I could not taste the vanilla bean in the yogurt. It becomes too grainy and difficult to chew after a few mouthfuls.

Overall the food seems average and highly overpriced. The place is way too hot and noisy to enjoy food properly.

A dinner of fried food Smile Jun 02, 2014
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : French | Japanese | Fusion

I have walked past this place a few times and there is always a long queue waiting at the restaurant. Tonight I decide to join the queue to find out for myself if the food is really worth queuing up for. Tonkatsu by Ma Maison exclusively serves up a variety of Tonkatsu dishes; breaded deep-fried pork cutlets that is popular in Japan. Tonkatsu by Ma Maison was founded by Akinori Terazawa in Tokyo, Japan back in 1976. Currently there is outlets in Japan, Singapore and Malaysia. The outlet at Mandarin Gallery is located next to the escalator. Decorated with various vases on the walls, which brightens up the black coloured restaurant. One can easily spot the cooks busy cooking in the open concepted kitchen.

Do not think that the menu is only on deep fried pork, there is also prawn, oyster and chicken too. The menu is divided into different type of katsu from Miso Katsu (Deep Fried Pork Katsu with Miso Sauce), Jumbo Ebifurai (Deep Fried Jumbo Prawn), popular Rosu Katsu (Deep Fried Pork Loin),Hire Katsu (Deep Fried Pork Fillet), Kaki Furai (Deep Fried Oyster), Iroiro Katsu (Assorted Katsu which are combination of different katsu), to Okonomi Katsu (Variety Katsu such as Chicken Cheese Roll, Deep Fried Prawn, Deep Fried Chicken Cutlet, Homemade Katsu Curry, Katsu Don).

For each order of a main course, it is served with rice, shredded cabbage and tonjiru ( miso soup with pork) which are refillable. For rice, there is an option of plain steamed rice or jyukkokumai (multi grain rice). The rice here is not cooked in the usual electric rice cooker, but in the traditional Japanese way in metal pots with wooden covers. One could see the cooking process of the rice while queuing up. The tonjiru contains more than 20 types of ingredients such as radish, beancurd skin, and carrots and is cooked a day before in the Nagoya Style.

Grated radish and iced tea are served after placing order.

Pickles (Tsukemono) of radish is served with the main courses.

Tokusen Kurobuta Rosu Katsu Set ($31.80++)
Special deep fried Black pork loin (160grams)
The premium cut of meat is marbled with fat, which at first look one would take it as uncooked meat. It simply melts in the mouth at the mouthful. It is gone too soon for me.

"Mameton" Set ($25.80++)
Deep fried prawn, pork loin and pork fillet, served with Tartar Sauce and Nyumen

Nyumen is actually Somen (wheat noodles), served in dashi (stock infused with bonito flakes, dried kelp and shiitake mushroom), topped with chopped leek. Served in a small cup, it tastes light and smooth.

The set consists of beautifully crumbed pork loins and fillets, accompanied by panko-covered prawns.Although the meat has a mucher tougher texture compared to the above set, it still taste not bad with its juicy inside, and goes well with either the spicy sauce or sweet sauce.
Condiments

Condiments

At the table, there is variety of condiments to go with the food. There is spicy and sweet sauces to dip the meat with, but I could not taste much different between the two sauces. There is also freshly grounded sesame for those who wish to have in the Tonkatsu sauce. There is sesame dressing which goes very well with the shredded cabbage that comes with each main course. Soyu for grated radish.

Dessert is served after the meal. Dessert comes in a form of tea jelly in a small bowl. Full of honey flavour but not too sweet. Just the right cleanser after a heavy meal.

Overall it is a very delicious and filling meal. But it is a bit difficult to get the attention of the staffs as the place is quite crowded. And I am also quite put off by the long queue which could snake pass the next door restaurant.

Restaurant Week Dinner OK Mar 23, 2014

The Restaurant

The Restaurant

The Restaurant

The Restaurant

It is Singapore’s first and only Sardinian restaurant, located at five-star hotel Pan Pacific Orchard Hotel, which is just behind Orchard Tower. Sardinia is a Mediterranean island just off the West coast of Italy. With its 1840 km of coastline, Sardinia is the Italian region with the largest coastal development; the sea is clear and practically preserved from every kind of pollution. Sardinian culinary tradition goes hand in hand with its natural variety: deeply tied to the past and based on genuine food and home-made products. The 230-seat restaurant has broadway look with its huge signage. Inside it is vintage looking with classy bar, plushy green leather armchairs and plushy black leather seats against the wall. The restaurant also has quite a wide range of wines display on the shelf. Nice and slow songs are played to enchance the broadway feel.

Tonight 3 of us are having the Restaurant Week Dinner Menu, which costs $35++ per person. We are showed to a booth seat table which is quite wide and comfortable, with lots of space for girls to put their bags. Another thing which we notice is that the table which we are sitting around is actually a old sewing machine with a board on top. Quite unique.

We start with a basket of bread and sticks, served with olive oil. The bread is quite soft. The staff also refills for us when we request for another serving of bread.

Starter

Burratina E Fave
Fresh Burrata Cheese Accompanied with Warm Mint Fava Beans
The cheese tastes quite light and soft in texture, which balances off the saltiness of the mashed beans.

Zuppa All' Algherese
Sardinian Seafood Bisque
The seafood in the soup is quite fresh, especially for the scallop. The soup is very flavourful.

Main

Culurgiones Oglisatrini
Stuffed Pasta Pockets of Potato, Mint and Pecorino Tossed in Butter and Sage
The dish is actually dumplings stuffed with mashed potato, lying in a pool of melted butter. Quite oily, looking as if the dumplings are swimming in a pool of oil. The dumpling tastes quite nice with a hint of mint. The skin of the dumpling is quite thin.

Fregola Ai Frutti Di Mare
Seafood and Semolina Pasta in a Tomato Based Seafood Sauce
It looks like a risotto dish when served. The pasta is like little chewy balls with a QQ texture. It tastes quite flavourful, but also quite similar in taste to the soup in the starter.

Tagliata Di Manzo
Grilled Beef Tenderlion with Roasted Potatoes and Mixed Greens
I am surprised that the dish is served on a wooden board with the meat covered by the greens. The meat is quite tender for middle rare. The dish is served with a choice black pepper or red wine sauce. The red wine sauce which is selected is quite thick and flavourful.

Dessert

Seadas
Traditional Cheese Filled Fritters with Honey
It is served piping hot and looks like a crispy deep fried chinese pancake, drizzled with honey. Inside the crispy pancake, there is the melted cheese inside. Feel like eating cheese pizza, topped with honey. A balance of sweet and saltiness.

Semifreddo
Semi-Frozen Ricotta Cheese and Fennel Parfait with Mirto Ice Cream
We order 2 servings of this dish, with one in blood orange sorbet and other in strawberry sorbet. Both look the same when served. I prefer the blood orange sorbet as it offers a more tart taste.

Overall the food is not bad, although a bit too oily. Quite a nice and relaxing place in Orchard area.

Restaurant Week Dinner OK Mar 21, 2014
Categories : French | Fine Dining

The restaurant is named after the late Sir Stamford Raffles’ first wife, and is located at the second level in one of Singapore's oldest national monuments - The Arts House. It serves French cuisine. The restaurant is quite small with an open concept kitchen, overhung with bronze tinted mirror panels.. There is also a stage which artistes from Timbre Group perform on Friday and Saturday nights. The 60-seater restaurant, with a private room enough to accommodate 12 persons, opens on 4th of March 2013.
The Restaurant

The Restaurant

Tonight we are having a 3-course dinner meal which costs $35++ during Restaurant Week. I have made the booking at the start of the restaurant week booking which is end of February. A week before the dinner, I have received an email from the restaurant which requested for my credit card details in order to secure the booking. Last weekend I received a call from the restaurant to confirm my reservation. Tonight about 5pm I received a system operated call to confirm my booking for my 7pm dinner reservation. Wow so much steps for just a dinner, I am think the service at this restaurant must be real good?

Kitchen

We are surprised to found a plain whitewashed door with the restaurant on top. There is no signage if the restaurant is open or not. Inside one find a victorian-colonial and modern looking place with the grand looking piano on the stage. The staff behind the door seems a bit off when she sees us, as she is busy serving dishes to customers. In effect she gives a if we are lost look. It is after sometimes when another staff checks through the computer for our booking. Another surprise awaits us as we are showed to the counter seats for dinner. It is a first time for me having french cuisine at the counter. The chairs are quite high and both of us have quite a hard time of sitting comfortably. We have a great view of the chefs making the dishes. In effect we are been served by the chefs themselves for some of the dishes.

We are served piping hot sourdough bread with the butter in a cute cone shape. The bread is quite soft. The staff often comes around, asking if we wants a second helping.

Starter

Les Champignons
Mushroom Ragout, Organic Egg, Parmesan Emulsion
The mushroom is well cooked and very tasty. The parmesan emulsion is not too cheesy but a bit salty.

One can also topup $15++ to change the starter to Les Coquilles Saint-Jacques (Hokkaido Sea Scallops, Capellini Pasta, Truffle Fragrance).

Mains

Les Bar
Atlantic Seabass, Vegetable Fricassee, Saffron Emulsion
The vegetables taste quite crunchy and crispy. With such crispy skin, I find the meat a bit too dry.

Les Poulet Jaune d'Origine Francaise
Corn-fed Chicken from Landes, Celeriac Puree, Roasting Jus
There barely any meat in the mid joint which I am having but the meat tastes tender. The celeriac puree is a bit too light in taste.

Dessert

La Pommes
Vanilla Poached Apples, Granny Smith Sorbet
A bit unbalance in taste, as it is sweet with a nutella like sauce on the base and a sourish sorbet on the top.The sponge cake on top of the sauce tastes a bit too dense.

Overall it has been a great experience. But seating at the counter has its side effects with the steam coming from the pots now and then, and makes one feels quite hot even with the air cooler behind us. Takes it as a free facial if one likes it. Coffee and tea is not included in the set meal. I have also visited the private dining room which is much colder and brighter than the main dining room. And if a staff has been stationed outside the restaurant, the customer would feel more comfortable, instead of feeling lost. A discount voucher is given for use at the next visit.
