Modesto’s @ Elizabeth Hotel Smile Sep 21, 2011

Modesto’s @ Elizabeth Hotel is a quaint pizza restaurant located off the road from Orchard Road. This makes it a really good place for relaxing after a long day of shopping because its so quiet and cozy here. The downside of this is you probably should get transport in because you don’t want to walk all the way in wearing your 5 inch platforms and carrying your countless bags of clothes. Service here is impeccable, the staff are always ready to attend to your every need. The pizza here may not be very filling, but its tastes fantastic. We had a woodfired Diavola (all their pizzas are wood fired) and the crust wasn’t too thick like those from pizzahut and California pizza, neither was it too dry like the thin crust pizza from Wheelock place. The toppings were not stingy either. I also ordered

a bloody mary, though I did not find it as impressive as their food, it could have been a little bit stronger.

Ichiban @ AMK hub Smile Sep 19, 2011

We tried the Chicken curry cheese set at ichiban. Chicken curry cheese is basically a hot plate dish made up of fried chicken swimming in thick curry gravy with carrots and a slice of cheese ontop. When served, the gravy is already boiling hot, but the fire is still lit so that your cheese can melt. I suggest not stiring the melted cheese in because it tastes better that way. Once the cheese is melted, you should blow out the fire (takes a few tries) to avoid having smoke in your face. The set consists of miso soup, rice, tempura and2 small pieces of watermelon. Overall i think the curry version is nicer than the chicken curry. The chicken somehow still manages to retain its crispiness, which is great!

And also because theres a promotion for Japanese Fish Cake ($4 for 4 pieces, takeaway), we bought all 4 different flavours of fish cake. The flavours are: Ebi, vegetable tempura, octopus and squid. I liked the ebi ones best. However, you should eat them soon after purchase as they don't taste as nice cold.

Sweet Indulgence Smile Sep 18, 2011

Sweet indulgence is a cozy little cafe admist the busy CBD area. It has a menu of western food such as pasta, salads, fish etc. though the range of dishes is rather limited. They also serve wine and fabulous desserts.

I had a salmon spaghetti with mushroom which was great. The salmon was fresh, the portion served was just nice, they were generous with the mushrooms and the sauce wasn't those far-too-thick-and-creamy-to-finish sort.

For dessert i had a creme brulee- It wasn't too sweet, the custard base was still crispy and it came with a generous portion of chocolate sauce yum!

Definitely value for money.

Spending per head: Approximately $30(Lunch)

Pepes is truly the best Indonesian food i've ever had in Singapore. It has excellent service - the waitress patiently waited for my parents to decide on their order, change their order and then bombard her with questions about every dish.

My favourite dish was the egg and tofu dish (see IMG 3). it looks somewhat like our chinese yam ring, the egg is fried till it curls up into golden brown tendrils and then drizzled in sweet sauce. Admist all the egg are chunks of tofu, that tastes great eaten with the egg or dipped in their chilli. Oh their chilli is another fantastic dish they had - we had to keep asking for more even though they gave us generous servings of it.

Other dishes we ordered were the beef rendang - a rather small portion but lipsmacking nontheless. Yellow rice - don't order too much of it, focus on their dishes if not you're gonna get too full to try more. Sambal kangkong - fried with a different type of sambal chilli that we are used to and probably the most expensive kangkong i've ever eaten in my life. We ordered their version of a lime juice - $4.50 for a rather small cup, very refreshing especially with all the chilli and curry going on, but a little too pricey.

Overall full marks for taste and service.

Tai Seng Smile Sep 16, 2011

This is a great place to bring your grandparents to! For our family gathering this time, we went to Tai Seng at People's Park because its a hot favourite among the old people. A problem with going to Tai Seng for dinner is parking is quite difficult and though there are lifts and its sheltered from the carpark to the restaurant, its still rather inconvenient for the older less mobile folks because the distance from where we parked our car to the restaurant was quite substantial.

The best dish in my opinion was the Ngor Hiong. It was crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. The pieces were also quite big and packed full of meat. The jellyfish was also great - it was just the right amount of sweet and just the right amount of rubbery-ness. The fish could have been fresher and the broth could have been a little more flavourful. The oyster pancake was a good representation of the hawker version, though the egg was not as cripsy as i would have liked. We also ordered fish maw soup which was excellent!
