I have heard many reviews of Drips raving about their delicious fruit tarts. However, they were located at Tiong Bahru which is rather far from my house. When i heard that they have opened another outlet at Sunset Way, i was really happy and dropped by specially to get a taste of their signature fruit tarts.

There is no sitting area in the shop so i took away a raspberry and mango fruit tart. Indeed, it was tasty. The tart base was crispy and the fruits were really fresh and juicy.

I have been seeing many online reviews raving about how good this hor fun is and there is almost always a queue for it. I decided to ask my friend along one day to try it for myself.

We arrived at Home Lim Food Centre quite early (about 11.20am) with the idea of avoiding the crowd. When we located the stall on the 2nd level, it just started operating but there were already 2 people in front of us. I ordered a 'abalone mushroom and prawn horfun' which costed $4. The horfun was of those Ipoh kind- thin and smooth. The gravy was quite thick and has a strong seafood umami taste to it. 3 medium sized prawns sliced into 6 parts and about 3 thick slices of abalone mushroom were served on top. I find it really value for money. The prawns and mushroom were really fresh. There was also some spring onions and shallots served at the side. Mixing everything together, the dish was quite gooey, but tasty.

FYI, as we were ordering and eating, a long queue has started to form. Do arrive early or be prepared to queue.

Walked passed this shop at the basement of causeway point after my dinner. My attention was caught by the promotion that they are having now. The theme was to 'Let's go green' this month in an attempt to support earth hour. Three of their avocado dessert were on promotion, namely 'Avocado Freeze', 'Avocado Float' and 'Avocado Coral'. All three dessert are found in their permanent menu, but they are slightly cheaper now due to their promotion.

Feeling thirsty and curious how their avocado dessert tasted like, i ordered an 'Avocado Coral' which costed $3.30 (usual price $4.90). Basically, it is a dessert featuring crushed ice topped with avocado cream, sweetened milk, coral seaweeds and some crunchy 'seeds' (sorry, i am not sure what is the name for them).

It was a sweet and satisfying dessert, although i would prefer the coral seaweeds to be cut into smaller pieces for easier eating and not as whole pieces like how they were served.

Good for thirst quenching.

OpenRice Food Tasting Smile Mar 09, 2013

Categories : Hawker Centre | Chicken Rice

Thanks to OpenRice, a few OpenRicers and I were given the chance to have a taste of this delicious chicken rice stall located at Maxwell Food Centre, a popular haven that houses many famous and highly raved local food stalls.

There were only ten of us splitted into 2 tables, yet the owner was really generous in serving us a whole chicken for each table along with many side dishes such as chicken gizzard, chicken feet, beansprout and boy choy. The full table of aromatic food really entices ones tastebud. bowl

Once all of us were settled, we can't wait to tuck in! First, i took some soup which was light tasting and clear without any traces of oil seen. It has a subtle fresh chicken taste and not overly salty. It really warms my belly and futher stimulate my appetite for the feast ahead. chopstick

Time for the essence of a chicken rice stall- the chicken rice and the chicken! The chicken rice was flavourful and well distributed thorough the whole plate. One applaudable point is that it was cooked until such that each grains of rice was intact yet fully infused with flavour which burst and released into your mouth with each bite. To cook the rice until this way (similar to how you cook spaghetti till al-dente) definitely revealed the well experienced skill of this stall's chef.

Next, the boiled white chicken was chopped in thick chucks which allow substantial and satisfying mouthfeel and taste. The chicken was drizzled with appetising light soysauce and sesame oil. Though i wished that the chicken meat itself is more infused with flavour, but this tiny 'flaw' can totally be ignored when you accompanied the chicken with their own made chilli and ginger sauce. I have heard from the daughter of the chef that they have to wake up really early to do all the preparation work, one including grating the ingredients to make these sauces. They insist of making their own sauce despite all the additional hard work as in this way, they can maintain the freshness and quality. Such dedication is really admirable. One thing to note is that their chilli sauce is a little spicier than most other stalls so be sure to test out your level of comfort before dousing your plate of chicken with it!

The few side dishes are not to be missed too.

The chicken gizzards were fresh and tasty without the foul smell that are commonly associated with animal organs. The gizzards were crunchy while the livers were soft and melty. The chicken feet was another impressive dish that i really enjoyed. Want to replenish your collagen for supple skin? Likes to eat chicken feet but find deboning them a nuisance and unglam in public? Have a plate of their chicken feet! Their chicken feet are served without any bones, leaving you the crunchy gelatine skin for ease of enjoyment.lol How thoughtful!

Nevertheless, one cannot forget about the must-have vegetable for a well-balanced meal. The boy choy was blanched, removing the raw taste which green leafy vegetables commonly have, while the beansprout were sweet and crunchy. Both were drizzled with a light tasting sauce and sprinkled with scallions, enhancing the fragrance of the dishes. Healthy and simple dishes that accompanies really well with the other 'heavier' dishes.

Overall, i truly enjoyed every dishes from this stall and am really grateful to OpenRice for the warm invitation to this food tasting event. lol

disappointed Cry Mar 05, 2013

I was drawn to the colourful display of tarts at Jollybell located at the basement of bugis junction.
Decided to try a longan wolfberry jelly tart as it look refreshing and healthy.

The jelly in the tart was very unexpectedly dense, the tart though buttery was too thick, and the egg custard inside was too little. The sweet longan on top was of those canned kind and was the best thing i enjoyed in this whole tart.

Definitely disappointed with its taste despite its pretty look and expensive price (the tarts cost between $1.70 to $2.50 depending on the flavour you choose). sad
