Hot Iron Waffle Smile Jan 16, 2013

My cousin brought me to Pique Nique after told her about my recent love for thick waffles. We ordered a Hot Iron Waffle set with salted caramel sauce, chocolate icecream and whipped cream. I love how they add 'Hot Iron' in their waffle description as to me, it makes the waffle sounds so rustic and droolicious.

The waffle took some time to come which i take as a good sign that it is made on order. The thick waffle was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The chocolate icecream should be of good quality as it was creamy and rich. Pairing the contrasting temperatue of the cold icecream with the hot waffle, and adding some whipped cream in every mouthful made me feel totally on cloud nine! Enjoy!! lol

Wanna DIY your sushi and salad? Smile Jan 16, 2013

Chance upon this interesting stall when i drop by the Cathy with my friend for a movie. Wanting a light meal to tide us through the movie, we decided to share a Mega San costing $9.90 which you can choose 1 wrap, 1 rice, 5 essentials, 1 special, 1 sprinkle and 1 house sauce. We also ordered a tempura enoki mushroom that allow you to choose a dip which we settled on Smoky Cheddar Cheese.

How we order is that we just tick what we want on a sheet of paper that contains all their available ingredients that we can mix in. There are too many to list here, but i am sure the wide variety will have some to your likings. smile

Our chosen combination are:
Wrap: traditional nori (seaweed)
Rice: Japanese White Rice
Essentials: grilled eggplant, japanese omelette, avocado, parmesan cheese, anchovies
Specials: grilled unagi
Sprinkles: sunflower seeds
House Sauce: Yuzu Sesame

Our sushi was served in a cute box. The sushi was nicely wrapped and cut into 8 pieces. My friend and i enjoyed the taste of our 'work of art'. The fillings do complement each other and turns out pretty delicious. My only slight displeasure was that the rice and eggplant are really very cold.

Our tempura enoki mushroom was served in a paper bag and was rather oily. However, it was really crispy and goes very well with the cheddar sauce that was served in a small plastic bowl. Do note that $1 needs to be added for extra dip.

Overall, my friend and i had fun and enjoyed this interesting concept. If you are not in the mood to DIY your own sushi, you can also choose from their signature sushi range which the ingredients are selected for you. chopstick By the way, everything is self-service.

Really good prawn noodles! Smile Jan 16, 2013

I decided to bring my mom here as she loves prawn noodle after reading the many good review published by the other openricers. They were having a set lunch promotion when i visited, where a bowl of their prawn noodle, with a side salad and crispy fried tofu cost only $6.80.

I had a soup been hoon prawn noodle set while my mom had a dry noodle mix bee hoon prawn noodle set.

The beehoon served are of those thick kind that are cooked to prefection- not too soft yet breaks gently upon biting. it was served in their painstakingly prepared broth topped with 3 big prawns and sliced pork. The prawns were crunchy and sweet, while the pork were really tender despite having the tendency to be too tough when boiled in soup. A special mention to their soup as it was really light and clear, not likesome of those i have tried elsewhere where the broth is cloudy and full of msg. They really meet what their claim to be! =)

My mom's dry noodle come tossed in a slightly spicy sauce that really makes the noodle taste superb. There was also a bowl of their delicious soup at the side.

The accompanied salad was tossed in a sauce that taste like soya sauce, which i find a bit weird. Nevertheless, the fried tofu was fabulous. The tofu is not just plain tofu but is actually a combination of tofu and fish paste that they cut into cubes to coat with a layer of batter and deep-fried. The thin crispy batter goes really well with the soft tofu within. A recommended side to order.

Took away a Lemon Meringue tart when i walked pass the shop one evening as i was craving for some sweets. The tart was really a steal at $3.80, which is definitely cheaper than many other shops.

This Lemon Meringue tart has a tangy lemon curd centre well-balanced with the lightly torched sweet meringue on top. The pieces of sugared lemon peels adds on to the pleasure on the tastebud. Furthermore, even though i had it the day after i bought, the tart remains crunchy. It is not those buttery tart base but more of those light sweet tart which i find compliment really well with the main star, the lemon curd meringue. I really enjoyed this a lot. lol

Even though Haato is more famous for their ice-creams, their cakes and pastries are really good too. I recommend them to everyone for your after meal dessert, even if u r really full because they are really light and the portion is just right that you feel satisfied, but will not fill you up.

Homely Japanese Fare Smile Jan 16, 2013

Categories : Japanese

Yayoiken restaurant is nicely situated right at the entrance of Meidi-ya supermarket at Liang Court. I decided to have my dinner here as i was attracted by the colourful display case of their food (plastic models).

I ordered a saba miso set as i simply love this dish and i will always order it wherever it is available.

The food was served pretty fast. Each set contain our main dish, a miso soup, a small cold tofu and a bowl of rice.

My saba miso is really good! The saba is well-braised in the miso sauce that the miso flavour is presence in the fish. The accompanied eggplants and beans makes the dish more colourful and healthy. You can eat them plain, but i suggest you to coat it with the miso sauce to get the best taste. =)
Nevertheless, the miso soup and the miso sauce is quite salty, but paired with the plump starchy japanese rice, the whole meal is so satisfying!

Will visit again soon!
