We wanted to dine at a place whereby we could listen to some live piano performances (not in a hotel) and we found Som Thai Restaurant. It has a nice setting, cosy yet relax environment. The service staff was friendly and attentive.

Very quickly, we were served with a complimentary basket of prawn crackers with thai sweet chilli dip as our starter. The crackers were fresh and crispy.

we had a crispy papaya salad ($8) which was their house special as our appetizer. As it read 'crispy' - the shredded fresh papaya was deep fried, accompanied with long beans, cherry tomatoes tossed with chilli, peanuts, dry shrimp drizzled with fish sauce. It was delicious but a little too oily for me though.

Next came the mixed vegetables ($10). Nothing special about this dish. It tasted like any 'zhi cha' mixed vegetables rather than thai's cooking. However, the portion was generous and the taste was good, most importantly, the vegetables were not over cooked - just nice.

I always order tom yum soup whenever I eat thai food because I simply love the combination of spicy and sour !! A Thai chef ever told me the original tom yum soup base is clear type (not chill paste), so if you want an authentic taste, always ask for clear soup base. We ordered tom yum ta lay (seafood) soup ($12) with a clear soup base which consists of sliced fish, prawns, squids, lemongrass, thai lime leaves, chilli and coriander. The soup was tasty and the ingredients were generous. 1 small order can serve 3 persons.

Then came our all time all time favourite - grilled squids ($16)! I must say this was the best dish among all. It was served in banana leaves, mixed with lemongrass, chilli paddy and seafood dressing. The taste was excellent. It was perfectly grilled, very tender and juicy.

Mussam Curry ($16) was recommeded to us by the server. This curry beef cheek is cooked in red chilli, onion, garlic, lemongrass and thai mixed herbs. We didn't enjoy it because we couldn't appreciate the herbs taste. It tasted more like Indian spicies than thai's to us. But, if you're a lover of Indian spices, this will be a good choice. Still, it wasn't really a poor recommendation because the beef cheek was very tender and the portion was great. It just a shame we couldn't handle the herbs tongue

Olive fried rice came last. This dish was specially cooked for us because it wasn't listed on the menu. However the chef was kind enough to accommodate to our request. Yet having said that, it wasn't the best olive fried rice we had tasted. It was rather disappointing as the rice was a little too soggy.

A high commendation of the chef's effort in carving, decorating and presenting a flower show piece to accompany every dish smile

I was on my way home after running an errand and since I will not have dinner till 4 hours later, I decided to eat something light, so as to prevent any hunger pang or gastric pain. This light snack is none other than popiah!! Definitely a healthier choice compared with some deep fried or creamy stuff tongue

I had it ($1.50 each) taken away. It was nicely sliced into 5 small pieces and wrapped. By then i ate it at home, the popiah skin was slightly damp but it didint smear the taste of it. The ingredients mainly consist of turnip, bean sprouts, lettuce leaves, corainder, grated carrots, chopped peanuts shredded hard boiled eggs, chopped garlic. The taste was ok (no wow effect lah) but was delectable enough. Not a bad choice for afternoon tea break smile

Walk passed E.A.T countless times and it was always very crowded during lunch hours. I thought to myself this eatery must be selling someting nice that's why people doesn't mind to queue for it and i must try it one day. Finally, I had my late lunch (had brunch earlier) there and to me, it was value for money smile

They have different choices of noodles, either al la carte or set. I ordered Set A (dry fishball mee pok and coffee - $4). The noodles were not very Q but not too soggy either, the seasoning was slightly salty, garnished with fishballs, slices of fishcakes and some chopped spring onions. If you're someone that enjoys lots of seasonings, then you'll find this dish delicious.

The local coffee was fragrant and good smile

I also ordered a home made tofu with fish paste filling ($1.50). The tofu was freshly fried upon ordering, so it piping hot, not too oily, tender within yet crispy without, fish paste and some finely chopped spring onions was well seasoned too. yummy smile

Jang Won menu

Chanced upon this restaurant one evening and that started our interest in Korean cuisine. Jang Won is run by a Korean family; the chef is the mother and the staff is mostly Koreans and is friendly and interactive, has a good service attitude. The ambience is pretty nice, fills with koreans and locals.

The complimentary starters (also known as banchan) - small side dishes of food are simple and refillable. It consists of kimchi (tastes fantastic), chinese spinach and big head bean sprouts (tastes ok, slightly salty), braised eggs are flavourful, strip potatoes are crunchy and tasty, as well as spicy fishcakes.

As I'm a big fan of kimchi, so Kimchi soup (with rice $14) is a must try for me! This soul satisfying soup is made with kimchi, pork and tofu. Though it's red hot yet it's not as spicy as it looks, and tastes pleasantly tingly, yummy smile The rice is fragrant and soft, goes best with soupy stuff.

Heard much about Korean ginseng chicken soup but have never tried it untill today. The soup ($26) was piping hot when it came. The portion was ok, the chicken (had been cooked for several hours accordingly to the chef) was so tender that you could actually eat the bone effortlessly. It was stuffed with glutinous rice and the broth was hearty and tasty (though i must say, the ginseng taste wasn't strong). Still, I enjoyed it very much smile

How can we go without trying the famous korean pancake? The staff recommended us to try the kimchi pancake ($14) and it was excellent !! It was primarily made with sliced kimchi and flour batter. The batter was crispy, thin and not too oily. The crunchy texture of kimchi adds a ton of flavour to the pancake smile

Last but not least, since it began with complimentary starters, it also ended with the complimentary traditional home made korean rice crackers and cinnamon tea. It tasted somewhat similar to chinese rice crackers. The cinnamon tea is on the sweeter side. It's either you like it or don't...

This is a nice place for family gathering, friends get together or even any dating couples... but I must say, the price is on a steeper side tongue

Mee Rebus Smile Oct 11, 2011

Bagus Mee Rebus

Bagus Mee Rebus

If you ever come to this hawker centre, you'll always see a long queue at Selera Kita Mee Rebus stall!! Though the queue may be long, yet the sellers are efficient and quick, most importantly, the mee rebus is bagus smile

Mee rebus is one of the many malay dishes i like. This simple dish is sold at $1.20, $1.50 or $2.00. I can smell its aroma while tossing the ingredients with noodles. The yellow noodles are rightly cooked, not too soggy. The light brown, potato based gravy is smooth and delicious; I can taste the salted soy bean and it's slightly sweet , not spicy (to my standard). It's garnished with a hard-boiled egg, bean sprouts, fried shallots, green chilli and lime.
