good and unique dim sum Smile Nov 18, 2012

Categories : Beijing

I went to Yan Palace at Warren Country Club with my parents for weekend family breakfast. They have really good dim sum there and all their dim sum comes around in a push cart. The dim sum ladies are very attentive, when they see you just arrive, they will push to your table so you need not have to wait long for the food to arrive. Here are some of the food we ordered, 2 servings of Steamed Prawn Dumpling Ha Kow ($4 per serving), 2 servings of Steamed Chicken Claw with spicy sauce ($2.90 per serving), 2 servings of Steamed Crystalline Seafood Dumpling ($4 per serving), 1 serving of Pan fried beancurd skin roll ($4) and 3 servings of deep fried almond prawn balls with mango ($4.50 per serving). We did not order the normal siew mai and char siew pau cos it was pretty common, we wanted to try something new and everytime we finish a serving, we kept ordering back the same thing cos it was so good.

The Steamed Prawn Dumpling Ha Kow was really good, the prawns were super fresh and the meat was succulent and crunchy. One serving came in four which mean we only got one to eat so we ordered another one cos it was just not enough. The skin of the ha kow was not too thick, it has this elasticity and very chewy though it was not too thick.

I shared one serving with my mother, we simply love the sauce they marinated the chicken claw with, it was a little spicy but very flavourful. The chicken skin simply melts in your mouth. the price of one serving is so reasonable too, $2.90 for such quality food.

The steamed crystalline seafood dumpling was really good, the skin is similar to that of the ha kow, the filling inside is really good, love the freshness of the prawn, the meat was just simply so sweet. one serving only comes in three, luckily we ordered another one more serving. The bill came up to $50 plus which is pretty reasonable.

The pan fried beancurd skin roll was just so so, I dun really like too much fried stuff, it was a little oily so did not eat too much of that.

The deep fried almond prawn balls with mango I feel was the highlight of the day. They coated the prawn ball with almond flakes, the almond flakes make the ball very crunchy. inside the ball, they also added mango on top of the prawn. The mango was very fragrant and give it a unique taste. It was so good we ordered 3 servings.

On weekends, they charged additional amount of $6. They called it a weekend special charge. Dun find it special at all. But the food was really good.

Recommended Dish(es):  deep fried almond prawn balls with mango

Spending per head: Approximately $13(Breakfast)

a hearty meal for 2 Smile Nov 12, 2012

My mummy suggested me and her head to Imperial Treasure Noodle And Congee at Ion Orchard for lunch. There were quite a number of people waiting to be seated. However we were seated pretty quickly as well. Since there were only two of us, we did not order much food. We ordered their Xiao Long Bao ($4.60) and Wanton with Hot and Chilli Sauce ($6) and their roast duck($9 if I am not wrong). We also ordered two white rice ($1.30 per bowl). The Xiao Long Bao came in a portion of four, just nice two each. The soup was really tasty. one of the nicest Xiao Long Bao I tasted. The Wanton with Hot and Chilli sauce was good, there were six pieces if I am not wrong. It was pretty fat and juicy. the duck however was pretty coarsely chopping and had a lot of bones so it ws kind of hard to eat but the flavours were there. It was pretty satisfying.

buffet at the line Smile Nov 12, 2012

I decided to go and try out The Line at Shangrila after hearing my friends rave how good it was. Apparently when you book online, there are many discounts, like 15% online booking, 25% buffet discount and so on. I was pretty unlucky cos the date that I want was not available for the 25% so I had to stick with the 15%. Better than nothing. The food at the line is indeed awesome. The seafood there was so fresh, I ate a whole lot of sashimi. The sushi were just so so, not a lot of choices. But they got change from time to time so have to continue checking to see if there is something you like.

I like the pizza there, it was thin crust so even if you tried all the flavours, you will not feel so full. The roasted meat was not too bad, a little on the chewy side. But very flavourful and tasty. There was a dim sum counter too, I love their glutinous rice dumpling. there was quite a lot of filling in the dumpling. The rice was cooked perfectly, very sticky and chewy and soft. There was satay too, but it was snatched up pretty fast, cos there is a limit that the chef could grill and the demand is so high. To ensure I got my satay, I stood there and waited for the chef to grill it. The satay was really good, it was marinated well, the meat was very chewy and juicy. there was not fatty meat too. the satay sauce was very thick and rich in peanut.

I was pretty thrilled to see they have a counter serving teh tarik. It is one of my favourite drink. Their teh tarik has rich tea fragrance and very milk. It was very smooth to drink as well. then they have the ice cream counter, you can opted for them to mix the toppings into the ice cream or simply get a scoop. I was pretty satisfied with the buffet spread. Paid about $60 per person after discount.

Hainanese Chicken Rice Smile Oct 29, 2012

Categories : Hainanese | Chicken Rice

I deliberately detoured to far east plaza for my delicious hainanese chicken rice. This place is so popular! There was a non stop stream of people flooding into the shop. I had to wait pretty long for my chicken rice to be served not because there were no seats but they just ran out of chicken. The uncle and auntie were really nice, they seated me down and told me to wait 10 to 15 minutes. I noticed a lot of people also waiting for the chicken. When it finally came out, within minutes of chopping, they ran out of it again. It was only 6.30pm on my watch and the staff told people the next batch will be available only at 7pm. This is how good their business it.

Their business is so good cos their food is affordable, one portion of chicken rice cost $4. The rice portion was pretty a lot, I had to zoom in on the rice to show how not oily it is. Some places cooked the rice until so oily just for the chicken rice flavor but theirs is not. It was very fragrant as well. the chicken is very smooth and tender. The sauce soaking the chicken is very tasty. their soup did not taste like they added a lot of msg into it, very tasty and goes well with the rice. I personally think it was worth the wait.

I went to imperial treasure with my parents after they ended work. Daddy drove us to tampines one to eat it. When you go to imperial treasure, it is almost a must to order their roast duck. Their roast duck is so delicious. the skin is the crispy kind, the ones you find at wedding dinners in expensive hotels. The duck meat is so smooth and tender. I will normal separate the duck and the skin and eat it separately. When dip in the sweet sauce, it is just so delicious. my dad also ordered their pork ribs together with the roast duck.
