Yummy Yoshimaru Ramen !  Smile Nov 29, 2010
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Japanese | Ramen

This restaurant is tucked in the small food cluster at the Big Splash end of East Coast Park. We parked at the public car park and strolled to it.

The first impression is that it's a cosy place. We were seated in the centre row. As it was drizzling, it added on to the cosy atmosphere which I like. There were quite a few versions of Ramen and toppings were added at a cost as usual. Each topping looked interesting, and we wasted no time to opt for the "ALL IN".

What arrived on the desk first was a lovely mortar and pestle set with some sesame seeds on it. We grinded as we chatted. There atmosphere was warm and this added on the fun.

The Traditional Hakata Ramen (ALL IN) was delivered to us after a short while. It was quite a large bowl, and the toppings didn't fail to impress. They were generous with the pork and mushroom too. What caught out attention was the shimmering, soft white egg white and sun-orange egg yolk (I googled and found it's called lava egg or nitamago) that rests so tantalizingly on the top. It was so tender when I bite and swallowed on it that I couldn't have to resist following up with the second half immediately. How come other ramen shops can't do it so well?

Actually every single bite of ramen and every drop of the soup is nice. Needless to say, we emptied it into the stomach cleanly.

This place beats Central's ramen shops hands-down.

Top of the class ramen and eating experience. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

This falls into "I am salivating as I write" category.

Highly recommended !

Picturesque Japanese Food Smile Nov 05, 2010

A fine dining like, degustation menu await you as you step into this relaxing restaurant with excellent service. Every dish is special, and delightful. It's a 7 dish course and each is beautifully decorated and delicious. They change the menu slightly every few months, and given the cost, it's best to visit it only for special occasions. But it would be every penny's worth. Recommended !

Categories : Filipino | Restaurant

Visiting this filipino restuarant named after the official number of islands philippines has is a relatively luxurious experience. The ambience is nice - warm light yet not too dimmed. There is supposed to be life band from Thur to Sun. However, since we went on Monday, we have to give it a miss.

Thanks to my equally warm friends, I have a great experience getting to know the food - from the taste, to the way they are cooked (from their elaborate description), to understanding more about their culture. I like the sour soup best (Sinigang Fish Double) - for those who can't take too sour stuff, this may be a challenge. But when taken in between the heavy dishes, it creates an appetite for more. Sizzling Sisig (minced pork on hot plate) goes very well with rice and beer. Rellenong Bangus (stuffed milk fish) is also delicious, yummy! Finally, there is the crispy pata (very fatty crispy pork strips) and chicken pork Adobo. Most of the dishes are not easy to cook. Let's take a simple example - Chicken Pork Adobo:
In this case, the combination of pork and chicken is slowly cooked in soy sauce, vinegar, crushed garlic, bay leaf, and black peppercorns, and browned in the oven or pan-fried afterward to get the desirable crisped edges. Hence two rounds, and this is considered relatively simpler.

Most of the patrons are filipinos , and my friends enjoy the music very much (even though it was just piped-in music for that evening).

Okay, filipinos out there, here's the place for you. For those who have not been to philppines, and want the real thing, this is the place too !

Basically, it's as good as it can be.

Star-strudded Bak Kut Teh Smile Nov 27, 2010
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Bak Kut Teh

I went to meet my family to shop for lights. But they had their stroll already and was resting at this Founder Bak Kuh Teh Restuarant along Balestier Road, just opposite the Shaw Plaza.

We were sitting by the right corner. The amazing thing is there was a small window, and on looking out I was next to a road which looked like an exit from a car park. I really meant, next - like cm's away. Not a secure feeling, as the cars passed by.

The rest was great. While waiting for the food, we had a good time observing the many celebrities taking photo with the owner. The owner didn't smile at all in all the photos - easily 100 of them - pasted on all available space of the wall. It was the celebrities who were trying to smile. It seemed from the photos that they requested for the photos to be taken, and the owner obliged.

The best part was still the food. My mom ordered the upgraded pork ribs. It's wonderful, done rightly, and the soup while peppered, was delightful. We also ordered some vegetables, soya bean curd, and pork belly to go along. Rating : 8.5/10. Why not 10/10? Well, I prefer a more rustic environment to go along this traditional dish, and it also lacks the traditional tea drinking setting and the smell that should come along. But on the whole, there is nothing much to complain about.

After the dinner, while we went out around 8pm, the queue had become longer. Hmm, it was just a weekday. Go early to avoid the queue.

Price wise, it's slightly pricey compared to coffeeshop. I had it some time back (02 Nov 10 may not be the exact date), so my guess is that it's about $8 for the bowl of prime pork rib. But you would need to order a little more to share. So, over $10 per person.

Recommended.

Affordable Penang Cuisine (Yummy) Smile Dec 05, 2010

We hesitated for a while, but my mom wanted to try something different. Ok, she is the real food reviewer. It seemed rather high class as it was so well decorated. We were seated and was delighted that the set meal cost just over $10. It came with starter, main dish and a choice of drink.

You can order the main dish by itself, and it would cost $10.90 onwards too. We know why when we received our set meal - the dishes were smaller.

I like the Tau Eu Bak the most. The Roti Babi (Hope I spelt it correctly) for starter was a little like French toast, except that it was thick with indian curry smell. Wow.

The service was also excellent, good introduction and well managed. We switched order, and they took it well. Later even after we had exited the restauarant, I went back to take some water for my mom's medicine and they politely asked if I needed warm water.

The only slight shortcoming was the portions are relatively small for a big eater like me. When it's delicious, you want more, you see.

Quite impressed. Got to go back.
