This was my third time dining at Ah Yat Tian Xia (Orchard Central, #05-34 to 36) as I like that the restaurant is conveniently located in town yet not as crowded as those at Ion or Taka or 313@Somerset.

This time I ordered a Abalone & Braised Shark's Fin Rice (鲍鱼鱼翅捞饭) just to try something different. The rice was in a thick shark's fin soup base, which was very delicious to me. This wasn't too expensive, $9.80++ (to my delight!) hehe.

I'll return to this restaurant given that the price is reasonable & food is quite good. They also often tie up with credit cards for promotions so as to attract customers. What's more, Orchard Central is quieter compared to other parts of Orchard, you don't need to jostle with the crowd during meal times or queue for long time to enjoy yr meal Good for gatherings to meet long-time-no-see friends as you won't feel the pressure to rush to finish your food and leave.smile

Value for $ Snack to-go Smile Dec 07, 2010

Categories : Singaporean | Bakery | Stall / Kiosk | Kids-Friendly

I was feeling quite hungry after 4 hours in the hair salon as I only had an early lunch of noodle soup that day. Hence I was hunting for a cheap quick snack at the basement of Northpoint before heading home for dinner.

I spotted this Pie Kia kiosk that was selling small pies at mostly $1 each. The low price and small size of the pies attracted me since I shouldn't be munching on something too heavy before dinner that was to be about an hour later. tongue Thus I decided to grab a Chicken Mushroom Pie (note the mark "M" on the top crust of the pie).

It was great! The pie was adequately warmed up and the chicken mushroom filling was well done, not overly salty or peppery. The top crust was also crispy and had a nice but slight buttery flavour. I must say I made a right choice in picking this to be my "tea-time snack". smile

Great tasty lunch Smile Nov 28, 2010

We had to host a Japanese colleague who came to Singapore for some meetings over lunch at this restaurant recently. As most of us had not visited this restaurant before, we asked the waitress to recommend us some dishes. The waitress recommended their Autumn speciality set for 4 pax to us, & suggested that we just need to order 1 more bowl of soup & maybe an additional side dish, which should be enough for all 5 of us already.

Autumn Set Menu for 4 ($139++)

3 “Autumn” Appetizer - this actually what we typically call as the "cold dish" 冷盘. There were the chestnuts, and picked dishes. Not bad, very refreshing.

Pumpkin Thick Soup with Crab Meat & Roe - we added 1 more bowl of soup ($12++) as there were 5 of us. The soup was really thick & concentrated, very nice!

Steamed Seabass with Chilli - This seabass was very fresh. I think we can say that it was steamed to perfection. smile

PUTIEN Sweet & Sour Pork with Lychees - The sweet & sour pork was very crispy. Add lychees to this dish was like a pleasant twist to the usual sweet & sour pork we have. Good one! chopstick

PUTIEN Mushroom Green Bean - We weren't very sure what this was at first, and thought it meant mushrooms and green beans together in 1 dish. But it seems like Mushroom Grean Bean is the name of the legume in this dish. Nice, tasted like french beans but it's small & round, somewhat like a mushroom. Maybe that's how it got its name. tongue

Fried Hing Hwa Bee Hoon - The beehoon was fried till it was very soft, and felt as if it could melt in your mouth as soon as you put them in hehe. Again we made a good choice to select this main course for our set. smile

Stir-fried Yam ($10.90++) - we ordered this additional side dish which was not included in the set, as it's one of the bestsellers of this restaurant. It was a great tasty dish with the yam stir-fried till very crispy, but yet soft on the inside. chopstick

The set also come with complimentary fruits which was a platter of different fruits like grapes, rock melon and guava. Refreshing ending to our satisfying meal. smile

Overall, we had a pleasant lunch as the food served were all delicious and not too oily or salty. The service in this restaurant is also excellent as all the service staff were polite and friendly. Just a note that the price doesn't come cheap for good service and quality food hehe.

Value for $ Vegetarian Meal Smile Nov 25, 2010

Categories : Coffeeshop | Vegetarian

This vegetarian eatery is highly recommended by my brother in-law, & finally I had the chance to join them for dinner at this eatery located near a temple in Geylang East on a Saturday evening. I was told that if monks come here to eat, it would be free of charge for them.

It was considered early for dinner (6pm) but the eatery was almost full. Here's how the food were:

Spicy tomato soup ($3.50)

This was served in a big bowl with lots of beancurd & tomatoes in the slightly spicy soup. Very tasty! There is no MSG after-taste too smile

Sheng Mian 生面 ($3.50)

The serving was huge! A lot of noodles heaped with caixin, carrots and mushrooms on a big plate. My sister had trouble finishing the whole plate. I tried some & it was great too. chopstick

XO Mushroom Noodle XO 香菇炸酱面 ($3.50)

The noodle is actually like banmian, and well mixed with a special XO sauce which had a tinge of spiciness. Shiok! It didn't feel vegetarian at all, just like the usual minced meat noodle (but without the real meat) hehe. bowl But one can barely finish the big plate, esp for ladies....

Wholemeal noodles ($3.50)

This is the main dish we ordered that felt the healthiest haha. It was clear soup wholemeal noodles, banmian style. Again the serving was huge. I like it that they made the mocked ikan bilis (think it tasted like mushrooms) and bits of mocked minced meat. tongue The noodles really tasted like wholemeal too!

Deep fried beancurd in Thai sweet chili sauce

When still hot from the kitchen, the beancurd were really nice & crispy on the outside yet soft on the inside. With the Thai sauce as the dip, I felt like it was a perfect match. smile

Ngor Hiang & Mocked Sotong Balls

The Ngor Hiang ($5) didn't taste tat good. They were thin & not really suited for my palate. However, we love the mocked Sotong Balls ($3)! It felt like the real sotong ball, very Q. chopstick

This is definitely a worthy vegetarian place to visit if u enjoy vegetarian food. It serves so many different types of dishes, that I think you can try a different dish everyday without repeating your order for a few weeks hehe. What's more, the prices are very reasonable for the amount they serve, and it's quality food being served. 4 of us were so full after eating so much. tongue

What more can you ask for? smile

Seoul Yummy, indeed :) Smile Nov 07, 2010

Categories : Korean | Army Stew

Finally, I had a taste of the "Korean Army Stew" in Singapore! I have missed this Korean delicacy for a long time & to my pleasant surprise, saw tat it is available at Seoul Yummy Korean restaurant.

We ordered the promotion set called "Army Stew". It came wif 6 side dishes (refillable), the stew as seen in the 1st pic, free flow of Korean barley tea, 1 special side dish (we picked the potato pancake) & the yogurt ice, costs $45.99++. Although not as spicy as compared to the one in Korea, it was really delicious! Slurp~

The dessert that came wif this meal was the Korean yogurt ice, or "Pat Bingsu" as they call it in Korean. "Pat" is red bean, & "bingsu" is iced water. It's my favourite Korea summer dessert as it's so refreshing wif real fruit toppings on top of flavoured shaved ice, and wif a scoop of yogurt ice cream. It's a very refreshing dessert to take in such a hot S'pore!

I must say it's a very sumptuous set for 2pax! Burp ^^
