Food Review: Rookery Smile May 07, 2015
Categories : American | Australian / New Zealand | Bars/Lounges | Café | Desserts and Cakes | Burgers and Sandwiches | Brunch

As the word Rookery suggests, it refers to a communal living area of people or certain type of species (as adapted from Dictionary.com). The owners of Rookery stuck by this and turned the cafe by day, restaurant bar by night into a place where individuals can gather to indulge in simple good food. The cafe is nested in the heart of the CBD area, located just opposite Lau Par Sat and gives working individuals another alternative venue for lunch.

We had:

Benedict's Eggs - $15

(Poached eggs, crispy bacon, grilled sourdough, hollandaise, rocket, sampled salmon or ham of your choice)

The hollandaise sauce was more buttery than tart, so I felt it was a little bland to my liking. Still, the smoked salmon and bacon added a good twist atop two perfectly poached twin eggs. Definitely affordable for a dish priced at $15!

Rookery's Big Breakfast - $18

(Eggs of any style, crispy bacon, grilled sausages, herb crusted tomato, sautéed mushrooms, roasted potatoes, grilled sourdough)

For $18, I must say that this dish was a tad pricey. Still, I loved the creamy scrambled eggs, roasted potatoes and the grilled sausage!

Spanish Chorizo's Hash - $15

(Chorizo sausages, sautéed potatoes, onions and capsicum, topped with two sunny side eggs and served in an iron cast pan)

Chorizo sausages are common in Spanish and Mexican cuisine, and they're pork sausages usually seasoned with paprika and spices. For this dish, I must say that it's pretty acquired because not many people might like the strong blend of ingredients. Still, I had a taste of it and still enjoyed the dish. I loved the smokiness of the chorizo sausages and the well-seasoned ingredients in the pan.

Service:

I enjoyed the service thoroughly. Our food was served promptly and the servers were very friendly and attentive in their services.

Atmosphere:

The cafe extudes an industrial vibe and is a great communal place for people to gather for lunch or after work for drinks. I loved the cozy environment which made me enjoy my food even more.

Food Review: Paddy Hills Smile Apr 26, 2015
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Western Variety | Asian Variety | Café | Restaurant

Paddy Hills has been making its name on platforms such as Instagram with its insanely photogenic dishes such as Berry Ricotta Hotcakes, The Asian Brick and Squid Ink Tagliatelle (See menu below). It is a cafe by day and tapas bar by night, offering a fusion of gastronomical delights which will bound to take you by storm.

Lunch Menu

We had:

Squid Ink Tagliatelle - $24

(Puffed rice, seared scallp, mentaiko, ikura and tobiko)

We ordered this dish since we been seeing countless of it on our Instagram feed, and it sure did not disappoint. The tagliatelle was tangy. though I felt that the seasoning was a tad salty. The seared scallops were fresh, and nothing can ever go wrong when mentaiko, ikura and tobiko fuses together in a dish. $24 might be a little pricey, but I would still recommend you to try this on your first visit.

Big Breakfast - $24

(2 slices of toasted bread, house-cured salmon, bacon steak, double roasted mushrooms, chunky avocado spread, caprese and eggs done your way. Choice of: 63 degrees, poached, fried, scrambled)

The visual spread definitely undermines its taste. The avocado spread was a good accompaniment with the scrambled eggs, which were creamy and light. What caught our attention the most was the bacon steak! It was a Western rendition of Chinese roasted pork (shior bak as they call it), and the juicy pork slice, together with its BBQ sauce got a major thumbs up from us. Not forgetting the ricotta and tomato slices! The only thing which we felt could be improved on were the salmon slices which could have been fresher.

Berry Ricotta Hotcake - $19

(Blueberry sugar, berries, pine nuts, mascarpone and maple syrup)

All hail the Berry Ricotta Hotcakes!

This reminded us fondly of the Madeleines at Delifrance, but with a fruity twist. Check out how fluffy and thick the hotcake was! I am proud to say that it lives up to its hype, and more certain to say that you'll definitely regret if you don't order this.

Do note that their Berry Ricotta Hotcakes take around 20-25 minutes to be served.

Service:

The food at Paddy Hills takes a little longer to be served, but I would gladly wait if the consistency of food remains. The servers took notice of our plates that were smeared with squid ink and promptly offered us a change of plates. Good and attentive service indeed!

Atmosphere:

Paddy Hills gives off various vibes with its brick walls, wooden tables, and rustic coffee machines. Their interior is pretty spacious so it'll be perfect for group gatherings. Just be sure to make reservations since it would get extremely crowded, especially on weekends.

Toodles!

Menu

We had:

Lychee Mint Cooler - $6.90

(With fresh mint leaves and lychee)

A refreshing drink for a scorching afternoon!

I loved how the mint leaves added an extra kick to the cooler.

Pomegranate Wild Berries Italian Soda - $5.50

I would have preferred the Lychee cooler to this drink! It wasn't immensely sweet or anything, just that I felt that the flavors weren't to my liking. Still, when it comes to drinks, it's rather subjective so why not order this and try if you're a fan of pomegranate!

Chunky Fries - $10.80

(Choice of Truffle Mayo / Masala / Bacon)

Saw "Truffle Mayo" and we knew we had to order this, especially since we can never say no to chunky fries! Definitely did not disappoint!

Whisk Breakfast Plate - $16.80

(Croissant, Scrambled eggs, Back bacon, Chicken cheese sausage, Roasted cherry vine tomatoes, Sauteed mushrooms, Mashed Potatoes, Yogurt with fruits)

When it comes to the pricing of food at Whisk & Paddle, I must say that they're pretty reasonable. For just $16,80, we got more than we could ask for! I especially loved the cheese sausage, scrambled eggs as well as the croissant! The scrambled eggs were really creamy, and cooked just right to my liking. Thumbs up to the mash potato too! I certainly did not expect it to turn out that good!

Eggs Benedict with Smoked Salmon - $13

(Poached eggs with Hollandaise sauce on Waffles)

Poached eggs on waffles - well that's something new! The perfectly poached eggs were served on buttermilk waffles with generous slices of smoked salmon. One down side to the dish was that I got sick of the hollandaise sauce after a while - it was a tad creamy for my liking.

Passionfruit Tart - $7

Whisk and paddle is also known for their pretty and delectable desserts! The tartness of the passionfruit curd was just right, and wow, the macaroon topped on it just sealed the deal.

Atmosphere:

Definitely a great place to chill, especially since it's located next to Punggol Waterfront Park. You get to admire the beautiful scenery and enjoy your meal at the same time. The cafe is reaaally spacious as well, so it's perfect for group gatherings!

Service:

The staff at Whisk and Paddle were attentive to our every need. However, my eggs benny took incredibly long to be served (I think I waited for more than 30mins).

Hope this helped!

Toodles!

Food Review: Hyde & Co Smile May 07, 2015
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : French | Café | Brunch

Haji lane is home to countless of cafes, sprouting up one after another in the recent years. Hyde & Co is a fairly new cafe that opened its doors last year and it's known for its wide range of tea served in delicate tea pots. It stands out with its old British charm and draws inspiration from the past.

Drinks Menu

We had:

Peach Tea - $6.50 per pot (Refillable)

Hyde & Co offers a huge range of teas, similar to what you get at tea boutiques like TWG. I opted for Peach Tea because I wanted a safer choice and well, I doubt that can ever go wrong. The tea was fragrant and fruity!

Truffle Fries - $10

(Generously mixed with premium truffle oil and Parmesan cheese)

For $10, I must say that the portion was pretty small. Still, I love how the truffle scent was thoroughly infused even down to the last french fry. I would have preferred if they were more generous with the Parmesan cheese!

Heavily scented

The Full Works - $17.90

(Baked cheese portabello mushroom, streaky bacon, honey baked ham, roasted baby potatoes served with Hyde's creamy scrambled eggs and sourdough rye)

One of the main highlights of this dish was definitely the baked portabello mushroom! The scrambled eggs were buttery, but a tad too runny for my liking. I loved the sausage and the crispy bacon, though I was also a little disappointed with the baked ham because it was too oily!

Odeh Odeh Cake - $6.50

At first glance, you would know this is unlike any ordinary dessert. This beauty features a pandan base with gula melaka dressing and coconut flakes which really got me wanting more! The cake was light and moist!

Atmosphere:

This English inspired cafe definitely won us over with its interior design. They also serve all their teas in pretty teapots that are the perfect setting for Instagram photography. This cozy hangout is definitely a great place for chilling on a afternoon.

Food Review: Boufe Boutique Cafe Smile May 07, 2015
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Café | Desserts and Cakes

Desserts and pastries available

We had:

Turkish Apple Tea - $5

The tea was fragrant and infused with Apple slices which was a refreshing change.

Smoked Salmon Croissant - $19

(Freshly baked croissant with smoked salmon, scrambled eggs and capers and fresh greens)

I loved how the croissant came in smaller pieces, and I could savor each piece with the scrambled eggs and smoked salmon that accompanied it. The eggs here at Boufe came in a drier consistency, slightly different from the usual scrambled eggs you get but still tasty. They were really generous with the smoked salmon too!

Eggs Benedict - $16

(Homemade brioche with honey baked ham, poached eggs, homemade hollandaise sauce and fresh greens)

I'm a sucker for eggs benny on brioche, because I'm a fan of having my hollandaise drizzled over thick fluffy bread. However, the sauce might have been a little too creamy for my liking. Still, cheers to the perfectly poached eggs!

Atmosphere:

I loved the white washed concept of the cafe, which somewhat reminded me of Blisshouse Cafe with all the swing and pretty vines going on. It's a really romantic cafe, so you might wanna consider bringing your other halves there!

You might find that it'll be quite a chore to head in, but we got buggy rides in from the friendly security guards, so maybe you can try requesting for it too! *winks*
