The set which I had selected was the special “Experience” degustation menu. This was a 6 course menu that was decided by the chef. In this case, the chef was Kevin Cherkas who was nice enough to come out and talk to us at the table about our likes and dislikes.
From there he would customize a personal menu just for you, with some dishes from the existing a la carte menu and some of his own new creations not on the menu yet.

From the whole menu, the best dish for me was the Beef Mustard. Not sure what this dish was given that name as there wasn’t any mustard. But this was the pièce de résistance for me because it was a perfectly medium done wagyu steak.

Beautiful tenderness and that subtle seared taste. It was accompanied by some very nice potato wedges, spicy chocolate sauce, popcorn and corn bits. Really really nice, I wish I could eat it 50 times over again.

See the rest of the set dinner at: http://dirtystall.wordpress.com/2009/10/06/the-experience-the-blu/

Dinner at Akashi Smile Jul 09, 2010

Akashi is a slightly more up-class version of Sushi Tei, with better set meals and rarer ingredients. It tends to get crowded fast so service can be a bit lacking at times. But overall the quality of food is good. The set menus are also great value for money if you're undecided on the ala carte items, which can be much pricer, like the sushi items.

However Akashi does specialise in sushi as well, and I really like the grilled anago sushi with it's unique coiled up shape, and their various aburi (seared) sushi, such as the aburi wagyu beef and aburi otoro sushi. They really melt in your mouth!

K Ki is a tiny little cake shop in Club Street that specialises in making Japanese style cakes. These cakes are usually small, delicate and complex, the Japanese style of making them.
The shop is partnered together with another shop in the same space, the Little Drom Store which sells vintage bric-a-bracs. Together, the space you find yourself in is peaceful and great for an afternoon off to relax in. Seating is quite limited, about 4 indoor tables seating 2 each and 1 outdoor table that seats 4. The decor is minimalist but elegantly clean.

Cafe Dumo is a chocolate-coffee cake which I was skeptical at first because I don’t like the taste of coffee. But upon tasting it, it was actually quite nice because of how mild the coffee taste was. They managed to make it blend together with the chocolate so that the bitterness was mellowed away.

Little Red Riding Hood has to be my favourite cake from K Ki! This is 70% dark chocolate mousse cake with a raspberry filling in the center that provided a touch of tartness. Fantastically rich and I pretty much finished it off really fast because it was so nice.

Return of the sushi nazi? Smile Jul 08, 2010

The old Wasabi Tei chef just opened his own restaurant called Chikuwa Tei at the start of May. Now located at Mohamed Sultan Road, the interior space is much bigger although you can’t see it from my photo below. He has retained the counter with about 16 seats like the old one, plus 8-10 tables, each seating 4 persons.

The chiraishi don set now comes in a circular bento box as opposed to the old rectangular one (which I actually prefer). Everything is the same however the price has increased by $5 but to make up for it, he has included 1 more type of sashimi.

So in this chiraishi there was shake, maguro, hamachi, uni, mekajiki, tamago, and tai. Every piece tasted exactly the same as from Wasabi Tei and the thick luscious slices of sashimi made me very happy and very full!

Hachi Omakase Lunch OK Jul 08, 2010
Categories : Japanese | Seafood | Sushi/Sashimi | Omakase

Hachi is a nice and spartan Japanese dining establishment which used to be housed at Orchard Emerald. It used to specialise in omakase dinner sets but after shifting out, chef Watanabe has created ala carte menus and opened the door for lunch as well so now you can see a lot of the senior office crowd coming in at lunch time.

The omakase doesn't actually use very fancy ingredients but the chef's execution in preparing is very good and you will feel contented after eating. However I have noticed that service standards and quality of food can be inconsistent at times so be warned, you may not find it value for money.
