Lai Lai Smile Apr 30, 2012

Categories : Taiwanese | Restaurant | Noodles

This Lai Lai outlet was at jurong point, b1. We went on a week day night so it s not very crowded, service was reasonably fast too. I ordered the beef noodle set that comes with pearl milk tea and a variety of side dishes of which I chose the salt peppered chicken. The whole restaurant is taiwanese inspired serving mostly traditional Taiwanese dishes. The pearl milk tea came first and was very good. Not too sweet and serving size was large too, they had either the green milk tea or red milk tea , of which i chose the green one. However I would have prefers more pearls. The salt peppered chicken came next and was quite similar to those you find from Taiwanese delicacy stores. This one tasted a little floury and oily though, and could have done with less oil, but otherwise still quite tasty. Lastly came the beef noodle with soup. The soup as wonderful and well flavoured with thick chucks of beef. this is probably the dish they are most famous for. The whole set was less than $15, a bargain!

Rose Veranda Buffet OK Apr 30, 2012
Categories : Multi-Cuisine | Hotel | High Tea | Buffet

It is not that the food wasn't tasty, or that service was bad. Its the extremely limited range of food that i was not satisfied with. For the price we paid, i felt Rose Veranda would have at least had a wider range of food in their buffet. That aside, the dessert weren't all that bad. On the other hand the sushi and the truffles were very disappointing.

Of course the best part of the buffet was the tea (which was what we came for). The range of teas they had was mind boggling, in contrast with the food in the buffet. Some of the names i have never even heard before!

Astons OK Apr 30, 2012

Categories : Steaks and Grills

I find Astons to be a place that serves up cheap and good Western food, a rare find in town. Mostly i enjoy their steaks, especially when it is topped with mushroom sauce - a must try. Steaks come with side dishes such as fries or salad. I chose the corn on the cob and mashed potato. The corn on the cob was unremarkable, a little too raw for my liking. I particularly liked the potato salad which is one of the best i have tasted thus far. Service could have been improved, it was slow despite the long queues outside.

Thai Express Lunch Smile Apr 30, 2012

Categories : Thai

Ordered a green curry rice set at Thai Express for lunch during the week. It was reasonably priced (overall the meal cost me less than 20) and the components of the set were interesting. There was the green curry rice (contrary to its name, there is no green curry, its merely green curry flavored rice) with hard boil egg, a starchy soup, pulut hitam which is a dessert of glutinous rice and coconut, and a kind of salad mostly made up of pomelo bits. I enjoyed the soup and the pomelo salad the most. Overall 8/10 for taste and 10/10 for sufficient portion.

Service is a definite 10/10. The uncle who served us was so enthusiastic he really made my day just seeing him enjoying his work.

NYDC Smile Apr 30, 2012

NYDC makes very good lasagna in my opinion. Not overly cheesy, yet not to the brink of being stingy with the cheese. Its also a smart choice to add the 2 slices of garlic bread, perfect for cleaning up the tomato and cheese from the plate after the meal. Do not let the size of the plate mislead you though! it may look like a small portion, but trust me it is certainly very filling. End the meal off with a light chocolate cake like the High and Mighty chocolate cake, which despite its name, isn't all that big and heavy - Its mostly just sponge cake.
