Sushi for lunch OK Apr 16, 2013

Soy Sauce Salmon

Soy Sauce Salmon

Sakura Don

Sakura Don

Itacho has been (and still is) one of my favourite places to go to for sushi, especially their roasted salmon/salmon sushi -really divine and at reasonable prices of approximately $1.20 per piece too. Today I decided to try their lunch set and opt for the $9.90 Sakura Don which consists of diced tamago, assorted fish and Japanese cucumber on a bed of rice, served with miso soup. The sakura don was slightly disappointing, the rice was slightly too wet (presumably with the fish and the cucumber) and I found bone in my fish (considering it was chopped into small piece I thought it was off-putting). Other than that, the portion was substantial, the serving of the fish to vegetable/egg ratio was decent, and the miso soup was hot with ample seaweed and leek in it. For it's price at $9.90, I would say you get what you pay for and it's a decent set meal. 3.5/5

The soy sauce salmon sushi was at a half-price promotion when I went, meaning that instead of 80cents per piece it is now 40cents. Itacho also limits it to 2 per person! Once again, I was disappointed by this. The salmon barely had any meat at all, just fatty (skin?). It also had a slightly fishy smell, had no particular flavour whatsoever and even though the rice was compact, the fish was neither cold nor warm and tasted on the whole, like eating slightly-salty fatty skin. Will never eat this again even though it's one of the cheaper selections. 2/5

Ambience wise, it is definitely a nice, chill place. Furnished with wooden tables, it all has a pretty zen feel to the restaurant save for the bustling chaos during peak dining hours. You also get a drink (hot/cold green tea) on the house when you order more than $10 per head. The hot green tea is nothing fantastic (tea bag green tea), but it complements the sushi. Don't expect stellar service here, you'll be lucky if you received exceptionally good service -after all, people come here for the food not the staff.

I would recommend the sushi instead of the sets -try the salmon, roasted salmon and shrimp egg, I had a far better experience with them! The quality of the sushi is good for the price, and it's also great to share when you order an assortment. Price wise, expect to pay around $20+ per person at least for the sushi if you're trying out a few types. Do note that for reservations, min spend is $25 per head and if you don't end up spending $25 you'll have to takeaway sushi to make up for the balance/order more. Not ideal, but given that Itacho is high in demand, I wouldn't be surprised they have this policy.

Sweet treat OK Apr 14, 2013

okb has a super chic, minimalist style - their buns speak for themselves. I bought a sticky bun for $2. The bun is cinnamon-like, with a sticky toffee base/drizzle. The bun is slightly too sweet though and in my opinion, the bun wasn't fluffy enough -probably because it was drenched in the toffee sauce. It's an interesting taste though, and you would want to try it because it has a more sophisticated taste to it than the ordinary cinnammon rolls that you find...The taste has another dimension -the sweetness isn't just a simple sticky sweetness, but something with more flavour.

For $2 it's a bit pricey for a cinnammon roll with sticky sauce, given that it wasn't particularly big, but it was dense -it's definitely worth a try!

Huge bowl! OK Apr 10, 2013

Got the 7 piece yong tau foo with kway teow today at Ion's Food Opera for $5.60

The bowl of kway teow and yong tau foo is HUGE. I must say that the serving of noodles + soup is definitely substantial. I picked 7 pieces incuding the tau pok, tofu, two vegetable servings, a fried fritter and two steamed beancurdskin-rolled fish paste pieces. The soup is really not that fantastic, probably has quite a bit of MSG in it but the hot bowl of soup is definitely comforting to an empty stomach. The noodles are smooth and not overcooked -great for slurping them up.

The sweet sauce is just right -not too thick nor diluted, together with a spoonful of chilli and it makes for the perfect yong tau foo dipping sauce. On the whole, I wouldn't say this bowl of yong tau foo left an impression, and I wouldn't exactly recommend it to anyone, you might perhaps want to try the stall at 313 Food Republic instead for a richer soup base!

Also -it gets pretty crowded during lunch time so be sure to know what noodle type you want and whether you want it with soup/dry -the cashier and stall attendants are really polite and friendly but you do not want rushed office-goers giving you death glares when you take your time with the orders!

Craft Beer OK Apr 04, 2013

Categories : Japanese | Bars/Lounges | Sushi/Sashimi

Went for drinks at JiBiru slightly before 8 and I managed to enjoy the Happy Hour promotion! Ordered one 440ml Sapporo Premium lager ($6.10) , and a 300ml Hitachino Nest pale ale($9.90). Not an expert on beer but I preferred the taste of Sapporo as compared to the pale ale. The pale ale seemed to taste way more gingery/lemony? It tasted odd, especially the aftertaste, and I didn't really like it. The happy hour prices are also divided into two, with one segment from 6-8 and another before that. Beer prices can get pretty cheap with the HH prices, making this a great place to chillout.

The ambience of the place is not bad honestly, the entire row of bars/bistros along the 313 outdoor region is quite nice to hangout and just chill. JiBiru has a dim kind of setting, with electronic tealights at the table. The tables and benches are wooden, which gives a very Japanese feel to it. JiBiru offers a really extensive range of Japanese beers and it's quite mindboggling at first sight.

Service is not too bad I guess, but it's nothing totally fantastic either, I'm guessing most people come here to just chillout with the beers. They serve up Japanese food too, but since it was my after-dinner destination I wasn't too keen on stuffing myself! Spent in total of $24 after GST and service charge -wasn't too bad an experience!

Not so fly after all OK Apr 04, 2013
Categories : Indian | Burgers and Sandwiches

I tried Flyin' Bread for dinner yesterday and it's a Mediterranean grill wrap kiosk in 313 Somerset. After eating wraps from Sumo Salad and Salad Stop, I decided it's time for a change and to try something more exotic. Flyin' Bread it is! I ordered the chicken wrap, which is actually grilled spiced chicken (it has a nice curried spice to it and it's tasty enough). Unfortunately, I felt that the chicken was too dry, and worse still, lacking in sauce/juices/gravy of any sort. The wrap comes with a choice of sauce (BBQ, chilli mayo or curry(? or was it yogurt)). I opted for BBQ since it seemed like the right choice given that I was eaten a Mediterranean grill wrap.

Not only was the sauce totally negligible (hence the wrap was actually really dry), but the whole wrap was kind of tasteless except for the chicken, which once again, isn't fantastic.

The wrap wasn't tightly wrapped at all (you can see from my photo here, I just took the first bite so you can see the filling)

The service wasn't fantastic either, I couldn't understand what the server was saying and I had to repeat myself countless times. Also, the service was really slooooow..... We literally waited eons before he took our order, and slooooooowly wrapped the wraps for us, and slooooowly asked which sauces we'd wanted.... Maybe he wanted it to be extra slow and made with extra love.. but I highly doubt that, hahaha.

I paid $5.50 for my wrap, which is much cheaper than the gourmet salad wraps you'll find at salad bars, and it kind of shows in the quality too, sadly ): It's mediocre in every sense and I know for sure I won't go back for seconds.
