Veggie Burger Smile Oct 08, 2013

Categories : Fast Food | Burgers and Sandwiches | Kids-Friendly

Triple O's came from a fast food concept where a fast-food van served up burgers and fries to cars and one of the patrons were too tired to get out of their car so they asked for the service staff to bring it over. They brought it over with such enthusiasm that that's how the name 'carhop' was borne! --The service here really is friendly and pleasant, and the they also have a motto that if they're not proud of it, they won't serve it.

They have burgers of different kinds -chicken, beef and veggie (i wanted to try the veggie patty!) and while one burger is quite pricey at $6.90, it's really worth a shot. I ordered the Organic Veggie Burger.

The burger is bigger compared to other fast food places and its really really tasty. It has a wholesome taste that's super addictive -it has lettuce, tomato, the veggie patty as well as gherkin served with it. The pickle is really tasty and I could eat it alone -the good thing is that it's placed separate so those who aren't a fan can opt not to have it. The sauce is indescribably tasty -savoury, a hint of BBQ and tomato. The patty (contents unknown :/) is also really good -not too dry and definitely not starchy.

Two thumbs up for this burger joint -it's quality in every bite!

Boston Seafood Shack OK Oct 03, 2013
Categories : American | Restaurant | Seafood

The Boston Seafood Shack at the Star Vista boasts their signature fish and chips as well as a variety of other catches (shrimp, oysters, etc!)

The whole theme of the place is done in a very fisherman-cum-nautical style with fish nets, floats, ship lights etc as their decor. It seems a little tacky at first glance but I guess you get used to it! There's both indoor and outdoor seating in which the outdoor seating would be non-airconditioned (since star vista is semi-airconditioned!)

They offer several types of fish for the fish & chips, and also their signature: Boston Clam Chowder (my friend tried this one, she didn't get the hype at all -it was a little salty for her liking!)

We ordered a Barramundi Fish & Chips ($14), a Grilled Snapper Sandwich($12) and a Refresher (~$7) (dont rmb the exact name but it had soda water in it with a few other tropical/citrus fruits!)

The Barramundi Fish & Chips is really surprisngly good -the fish is crisp on the outside and the batter isn't too thick and the fish is delightfully fresh! The portion of fries is also huge -I've been here on a few occasions and I've never been able to finish the fries. The drawback would be that the fries aren't anything but mediocre -they are thick cut though, which is how I like them. They also tend to get a bit soggy when cold.
You may want to consider asking what their catch of the day is also!

There is a condiment tray on every table with Malt Vinegar, Tabasco, Chilli Sauce & Ketchup -My personal favourite is vinegar + tabasco but classic chips fans will enjoy the ketchup smile

The grilled snapper is slightly overdone in my opinion, and has a slightly fishy aroma which was slightly disappointing. The sauce was good though, slightly sweet with a hint of teriyaki. I really liked the bread, it was slightly bread and was toasted to perfect. The crustiness of the fresh bread is effortlessly complemented by grilled fish and fresh greens. The grilled fish could have been much better though! The salad was also a little lacklustre -we would have liked a bit more flavour (a dash of balsamic vinegar perhaps). It seemed more like a hasty throw-in of salad vegetables without a proper dressing.

I wanted to try the Lobster Roll but it was unavailable that day sad The Lobster Roll is one of their specialties and if you're not in the mood for fish, you can give this a go.

They have a juice bar in which one can order from a selection of their special concoctions. We opted for the Refresher, which includes citrus and tropical fruit juices (lime? pineapple?) + soda water. This was horribly disappointing!! It smelled like detergent/toilet soap and tasted artificially sweet/fruity (What were they thinking when they said juice bar?) -Do yourself a favour and get yourself another beverage. Beers go for around $5.50 for a bottle of Tiger and soft drinks are around $3. They are a far safer bet than the "juices".

Service here is also remarkably slow and inefficient -I've been here twice in a time span of 1 year and on both occasions, service is equally inadequate. Do not expect good service! However, the food is relatively decent if you know what to order, and also reasonably priced for a casual restaurant.

NUS YTF! Smile Oct 03, 2013
Categories : Hawker Centre | Noodles

Yong Tau Foo at the Deck has always been the coveted stall everyone rushes to when the queue is relatively short (think: average at least 15 persons in front of you = the norm!!) They offer normal soup/laksa gravy (haven't gotten round to try this yet but its worth a shot) Prices are at 30c per pent, 40c for noodles and min 6 piece (min 8 piece for soup only!). Laksa gravy is additional 40c.

One thing to know about this YTF: the soup is really sweet! It has a more sweet flavour than a savoury one. The choices for the ytf pieces are diverse so no complaints there. They also offer several kinds of noodles - kway teow, yellow mee, bee hoon etc. I like kway teow but this one seems abit flourry/rough (not really smooth:/) Eaten with the sweet sauce it resembles chee cheong fun!!

Ps The chilli isnt too spicy so if you want a (slight) kick to your ytf this one's perfectly safe.

Ayam Bakar OK Sep 29, 2013
Categories : Indonesian | Food Court | Halal

While the food here is relatively good (they serve ayam penyet and ayam bakar as well as other indon favourites like mee soto and gado gado etc), the service is so unbearably slow!! Ugh. Prices range from around $5+ and up, the Ayam Bakar is $5.90 and you get a choice whether you want thigh/breast.

The ayam bakar is grilled on the spot, and I wished there was more of that great gravy to go with the rice sad the breast was slightly dry for my liking, but the tempeh and the taukwa were excellent acompaniments. The chicken was aromatic, savoury and had the distinct barbecue flavour. A special mention would go to the chilli -this blended concoction really hits the spot. It's way spicier than it looks and it goes great with the tempeh and the chicken. Pity there wasn't more gravy though, it was a bit dry.

Curry Teppanyaki Smile Sep 27, 2013
Categories : Japanese | Food Court | Rice

At 9+, this was one of the stalls still pretty much open for business so I thought hey why not.

hai's serves an array of teppanyaki dishes with a staggering variety of permutations of chicken/fish, squid, curry etc. I opted for the Curry Chicken set at $5! Most of the sets here range from $5 and up, depending on the meat/seafood.

The sizzling hotplate of curry teppanyaki chicken was really scalding hot! The sticky japanese rice went beautifully with the golden, thick curry gravy. With an egg cracked on top, it was perfect! I found it slightly odd though, that the rice, egg and gravy were way hotter than the chicken itself.... Hmm.. Other that the oddness of this temperature disparity, the curry was pretty good. One thing to know though, it kind of coagulates (very slightly) when cold, so eat it up quickly! The soup had seaweed and egg in it -nothing much to rave about here.

Would definitely recommend this to anyone needing a curry fix -it's also an excellent hot meal for a cold day smile
