Better than average Jap fare OK Jun 28, 2013

Categories : Japanese | Ramen

Daikokuya Ramen serves up several versions of Ramen; Sapporo, Tokyo and Kyushu styles are all sold here though all of them is just the same to me (I don’t fancy ramen as much). Other than that, they have sashimi, karage, edamame, gyoza and many more side dishes as well as Tonkatsu/Ebi Fry Curry Rice for your non Ramen lover friends like me, as well as desserts.

First up on the table was Salmon Carpaccio ($8.80++); a Salmon sashimi dish served with Italian dressing with onions. The salmon sashimi tasted relatively fresh, with the italian dressing providing a bit of a zingy lemon flavour that made the sashimi less fishy in it’s taste; good for people who are not very receptive on the fishy taste of sashimi and made it simply refreshing to have slice after slice.

I ordered Tonkatsu Curry Rice ($15.80++). The deep fried Pork has a really crispy fried batter which was just a delight to sink your teeth into, but the pork was slightly stiff and hard to bite off. I literally had to chuck the whole piece of Tonkatsu in my mouth and twirl it in my tongue to try breaking the piece of pork in my mouth before I actually can chew it into tiny bits. While that being said, the curry sauce was just alright and is sweet enough without being spicy at all, with chunks of carrot that are boiled soft to chew.

I thought the Shiratama Cream Zenzai ($5.20++) was nothing much, given that it was only red-bean with glutinous rice balls with ice-cream. I was wrong; the vanilla ice-cream really blended well with the red beans which gave it a slight creamy and milky flavour and the glutinous rice balls were very chewy and bouncy.

Oyako Don! OK Jun 28, 2013

Categories : Japanese | Hawker Centre

There are not many Japanese food stalls in food centres, especially when it comes to food centres that are situated in the heartlands. Konomi Zen is one of such Japanese stalls located in Ang Mo Kio that claims to serve restaurant style food at hawker prices. Since it sounded like a good deal and with had a few newspaper reviews under its belt, I knew I had to try them out.

I ordered the Oyako Don. For $3 a bowl, they were very generous on the serving of chicken and there were enough chicken to compliment the rice. The gravy was sufficiently sweet to flavour the plain chicken and rice, but I thought they could give slightly more gravy as it was not really enough to cover off some plain rice. The egg was quite runny and it was just nice as well. The seaweed was impressive; most places I went to place seaweed as a form of presentation and they hardly ever carry any taste. This one had much flavour to it.

Following the trend of upscale coffee joints opening in Singapore, Teadot is like a tea counterpart to all of these coffee joints that serves mainly teas. Also like other coffee joints, they also serve coffee and other beverages, as well as some pies, cakes, muffins and scones that would compliment a drink for a great high-tea.

The Blueberry Muffin is warmed as you order. The whiff of the muffin was so alluring as it laid on the table. It was fluffy and there were traces of blueberry in it, and was a good item to compliment any hot beverage on a day where relaxation is on top of the mind.

The New York Cheesecake is slightly stiffer than others served out there., though smooth. It’s light tasting, probably even on the verge of being quite bland which was a letdown.

This is actually my first Lemon Meringue Tart and I was treated to a combination of many flavours. The lemon’s sourness is being evened-out by the fresh cream and a layer of semi-sweet chocolate that was in between the lemon and the crust. The crust also held the tart pretty well and was still pretty rigid even after a while.

Laksa nia OK Jun 19, 2013
Categories : Singaporean | Fusion | Restaurant | Noodles | Kids-Friendly

Laksania sells only Laksa dishes. From sides to mains and its hotpots, Laksa is served in all dishes except for desserts and drinks. While they sell the different types of Laksa, they also incorporated Laksa into the popular foods of today, creating unique flavours that will create impressions.

The Singapore Laksa is something that tastes familiar and close to our hearts. With all the necessary ingredients such as cockles, prawns, fishcake, taupok, etc, it’s an all-rounded dish that was above average. The coconut milk in the broth was evident, and it creates the taste that makes it a bowl of truly Singaporean Laksa. The shells of the prawns came off rather easily, indicating freshness.

I hadn’t tasted a Sarawak Laksa before, but the Sarawak Laksa came with shredded chicken, prawns and taupok. Much like the Penang Laksa, there is a strong Sambal belacan flavour with only a hint of Coconut milk. It’s also slightly more sour but less spicy.

One of the more innovative dishes one can find here at Laksania is the Laksa Chicken Baked Rice. Looking like a normal plate of Chicken Baked Rice, the real essence of this dish lies beneath the cheese. While the rice was a bit underwhelming, the laksa sauce underneath the layer of cheese made it one-and-only. Would have preferred more sauce with the rice as it would have given the dish more punch.

Laksa Goreng was a must-try dish on the menu. It was slightly dissapointing for it’s name as I couldn’t taste any laksa in the dish. That being so, it was definitely a satisfying plate of Mee Goreng, just not a plate of Laksa Goreng.

Categories : Ice Cream and Gelato

Visiting Milk & Honey Gelato had been on my mind for quite a while now, but I kept pushing it back as some people told me it was not worth purposely visiting. Since I was at Blk 85 for food, why not go down for a try since they are in the viccinity?

Turns out, Milk & Honey is neighbours with Choc-A-Bloc, which makes them surprisingly easy to find since both of them are behind the Blk 85 market. All along, I was under the impression that they had quite a big shop space, so I was taken aback when I saw it having a halved shop space with two foldable tables and two chairs each for interior seatings and another three foldable tables with four chairs for al-fresco.

The Irish Latte is supposed to be a gelato version of Irish Coffee. There were some coffee beans that were in the gelato that helped made the gelato pretty deep in flavour. It was also rich in the latte side, however I really cannot detect anything that was Irish within it as it was severely lacking in the alcoholic taste. The Salty Malty is Horlicks with sea salt. As odd as the combination sounds, it is really more addictive than salted caramel. This flavour essentially tastes like salted caramel at the start, but ends off with a hint of Horlicks. I would seriously recommend this flavour if anyone asked me which flavour to get from Milk & Honey.
