Ayam Panggang! Smile Apr 29, 2013
Categories : Indonesian | Food Court

Every food court should have an Indonesian food stall, you can never go too wrong with fried chicken, grilled chicken or seafood, served together with curry sauce.

Ayam Panggang, $6.90
(+$0.50 for vegetables)

I prefer to have a balanced meal with both meat and vegetables, so I'd usually request for a serving of vegetables at an additional charge of 50 cents. The total cost came up to $7.40, which was a tad expensive, but the serving was really extra huge, with a humongous piece of chicken thigh. I actually got quite full after eating less than half of the meal. I usually request for more curry sauce on my rice, and as expected, the meal was awesome and filling.

There was a queue when I was there, but it moved fairly quickly.

Good place to chill-out Smile Apr 28, 2013

Categories : Café

My friend and I were actually looking for a little cosy place to settle down for a snack after a long day of walking around. There were many restaurants in NEX that serves full meals, which were not quite what we were looking for. Tea Dot was one of the little choices we had. Other than being a tad expensive, I actually love the drinks they serve.

Matcha Gravity and Earl Grey Tea

Lemon Cheese Cake

I was quite disappointed that my favourite Red Fuji Apple drink was no longer listed on the menu. I then asked if by any chance it was still available for order, but the young waiter told me with much confidence that they have never ever served that drink before! We knew that he probably didn't work long enough at the cafe to know that their Red Fuji Apple used to be a very popular item on their menu, but whatever it was, his answer was clear enough that indeed, the Red Fuji Apple refreshing drink that I loved was no longer available!

The Earl Grey Tea was really strong and good, but otherwise I thought there wasn't anything too special about it because I could easily purchase a whole box of Earl Grey teabags elsewhere at a fraction of the cost, and it would have tasted the same anyway. The Matcha Gravity was better, being thick and frothy with a good balance of the milk and the green tea components. The Lemon Cheese Cake was enjoyable but not too outstanding.

This is a very good venue for massive gatherings; they have big tables and the space is more spacious compared to most other steamboat venues.

So I went there with about 10 other friends for a dinner steamboat buffet. Some of them fasted for the day so that they could eat and enjoy more, so you can imagine the huge amount of food we ordered.

I was down and unable to eat anymore after 45mins, but most of the guys were still going strong. In fact, they ordered 3 rounds of food, and considering this is ala carte buffet, imagine the huge amount of plates and bowls accumulated after awhile. This was where their service is very commendable.

The waitress were quite prompt in serving and clearing the dishes, and took much initiative in topping up the soup constantly. There were some food items unavailable which we were not expecting to be served, however towards the end of our meal, we were told that some unavailable items have been stocked up so they could let us have those if we wanted. The guys whose stomachs were bottomless pits, agreed to have the food served. What was worthy of praise was that they compiled all 3 rounds of our orders and counted the exact number of plates of food we had originally wanted, and served us in that exact amount. I found them to be rather thoughtful!

While we were finishing up our food, another 2 friends, who have already had their dinner, wanted to drop by to say hi. Most buffet restaurants don't allow non-paying customers to enter even though they are not eating, but we were so surprised they actually allowed these 2 non-paying non-eating friends to just pull 2 extra chairs to sit beside our table that day so that we could have an enjoyable gathering. I was really impressed.

I wouldn't say the standard of the food was excellent since most steamboat outlets serve their raw vegetables and raw meats in the same way - so I'd rate the food at an expected standard. From the photo above you can observe that most of us dunked our food into only 1 side of the pot, leaving the other side empty - that's because the "ma la" soup base was too oily for our liking. More than half of it was chilli oil, which I found to be too spicy, and also, I didn't like it that my mushrooms and vegetables turn up like an oil sponge after cooking in it.

However, what's most important for our massive gathering was not about whether the food was "good" or "awesome" -- an "expected" standard in a comfortable air-conditioned restaurant that was not too expensive, was already more than enough for us, because it was more about the experience, environment, and service that gave us a more memorable reunion.

melt-in-your-mouth Macarons! Smile Apr 28, 2013

Categories : Desserts and Cakes

When in need of desserts or even presents, the simplest solution is to turn to Obolo. Personally I would rate their standards to be pretty high-end. It's not just about the food, but also about the entire packaging and experience.

To be frank, I received the below set of Macarons as a gift:

And since this was a gift, I hvnt any idea how much it costs. I'd guess it's most likely a luxurious price tag for a box of mararons, but I'm also guessing most people would think this very price tag won't make the cut for an exquisite gift. The fact was, when I received it, I felt like it was the best gift.

The packaging is just luxurious, with pink words and some designs embossed on a black background. The macarons put together resemble a happy rainbow. The melt-in-your-mouth texture and heavenly taste made me feel very privileged. I almost couldn't stop myself from finishing the whole box the moment I opened it - the only way I did it was to tell myself to drag this privilege over a longer period of time so that I could count more blessings with it.

Awesome cheese cakes Smile Apr 28, 2013

I dislike pastries in general but many thanks to giving both Secret Recipe and myself a chance, I feel that disliking pastries might be becoming a thing of the past! There is nothing not to like about cakes when one walks into Secret Recipe (I have not relaxed myself with other pastry cafes yet), because the cakes here look really delectable and yummy!

This has to be my favourite in the entire store, and I never leave this place without first indulging in a slice of it:

Cheeze Choc
(Soft Chocolate mixed baked cheese and biscuit base)

Cheese cakes always have this addictive melty and soft texture that makes every mouth so appealing. When baked together with soft chocolate, the saltiness of the cheese and sweetness of the chocolate balances itself out so well that this combination is nothing short of magical. I'm craving for another slice of this cheeze choc right now!
