Great cafe within campus! Smile Feb 27, 2014

Categories : Bakery | Café

With the number of cafes opening up increasing by day, it’s not surprising there are an existence of cafes in schools. Bread Yard, a 2 year old cafe operating at the interim campus of the Singapore University of Technology And Design, specializes in all-day breakfast, sandwiches, bread and coffee/drinks

The menu here is extensive and like other food establishments within schools, there is a different pricing scheme for the school and for the public.

The Eggs Bettino ($5.90 for SUTD staff/students, $6.90 for public) is easily the cheapest eggs benedict I can find around. And for the pricing, the food did not disappoint too much. The poached eggs are runny and the hollandaise sauce complemented well with it. The bread is rather hard to cut though, though this tasted great with the honey-glazed ham. The salad is great especially with the sauce.

I topped my meal up with a Set D, consisting of a Fresh Salad and Ice Tea ($1.50 for SUTD staff/students, $1.80 for public). The salad tasted great and comes in a big portion. The iced tea is refreshing to have after the meal.

If you live around the Dover area, or if you are studying near/at SUTD, this is a great place to study, relax or even to read newspapers that are available near the counter!

Cakes and just cakes! Smile Feb 27, 2014

Ever since L’Etoille Cafe opened on one of the shophouses along Owen Road, a few more cafes came out, namely Cakes Literally and P Bistro. As I was aiming for something light, I went for Cakes Literally.

This statement stand true to its meaning.

For coffee, the Terra Firma blend from Papa Palheta is used here (hooray for great coffee!). The tea selections comes from Australian tea brand T2 (not commonly found elsewhere as it is only sold in one place in Singapore, which is Tangs VivoCity)

The menu based itself mostly on cakes.

As compared to other places, the Carrot Cake ($7) here fared slightly better than others. It is rather firm and not too crumbly. The cream cheese is also rich in flavour.

If you are around the Farrer Park / Pek Kio / Jalan Besar area, this place is a great place to grab a slice of cake and relax.

The hype over the locality of this place, an industrial space functioning both as a bike atelier and a cafe at the same time, Wheeler’s Yard is a place where you can get unique bicycles while also having western food items and drinks!

The food menu is rather extensive here.

And the drinks menu! Rather simple.

The Latte ($5) tasted ok with the right amount of milk added. Nothing too great.

The Big Breakfast ($14.90) is served with a wholemeal bread toast, scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, hashbrown & garden salad. This is way better than the coffee although not overwhelming as well. The toast was rather nicely toasted and crusty. The scrambled eggs are nice. The bacon is great. The sausages and the hashbrown are average. The garden salad is also not too bad. In overall, this could have been better.

If you live or is around the Balestier area, this place should be considered to have your meal (for its ambience; do not expect too much from the food and drinks)

Belgium waffles! Smile Feb 23, 2014

Kampong Glam has always been a hot hit with people going there to shop, eat or just walk around. Cafes here are quite common as well in the area, such as La Marelle, CAD Cafe, and even the recently opened Elffin & Elffin. Stateland Cafe has become the newest addition to this area. Also operating a online macaroons business called Flag & Sac, this place serves all-day breakfasts, pastas and desserts.

The menu here is rather simple, and reasonably priced.

The coffees here are made using the Terra Firma blends from Papa Palheta. The Macchiato ($3.90) provides a single shot of espresso, which has a slightly acidic and bitter taste.

The Latte ($4.70) tasted strong and firm with the right amount of milk added.

The Belgium Waffles ($10.90) comes with a chocolate ice cream, fresh fruits and Stateland’s waffle sauce. This is possibly one of the best waffles coming from a cafe. Crusty on the outside, soft and moist on the inside, this goes well especially with the chocolate ice cream.

This place is a great place to come to for their coffee and food after some shopping within the area, so if you are around the Kampong Glam area, this should not be missed!

While walking around Haji Lane, me and my friend found this new cafe that looks rather noticeable. We then found out it opened only yesterday and their official launch is on 14th February. Prior to that, they have catered cakes for the Singapore Subway Exhibition last month. Nonetheless, their cakes and drinks menu are up already!

The Americano ($3.50), brewed using the blend from Highlander Coffee, produces a slightly acidic taste which isn’t too overwhelming.

However, the Flat White ($5) didn’t really satisfy. Although the coffee taste is strong, the acidity of the coffee overpowered the taste of the milk added.

The Blueberry Cheesecake ($6.50) is rich in both flavour and taste. The cheese is indulging, and the layer of blueberry on top is great too.

The Chocolate Fudge Cake ($6.50) is great as well. Flavourful and chocolatey, it is also very firm.

If you are walking around Haji Lane, this is a great place to stop by and have a cup of coffee and cake. Do be here during their official launch on 14th February!
