Ever thought how does the coffee shops and hawker centres produces coffee at affordable prices? It is via the old and traditional method of brewing coffee and filtering it through the “socks”, attached to the flasks. As most places has already switched to using steel flasks, Da Zhong Cafe continue to use brass flasks.

The Kopi-O ($0.60) is excellent as it tasted strong and bitter (the traditional way). Great kopi at a cheap price, this is definitely one of the better ones out there.

The Steamed Bread with Kaya & Butter ($1) is also something to order. Usually not sold elsewhere nowadays, the steamed bread was soft and fluffy with excessive kaya & butter. Thumbs up for this as well!

With such traditional kopi sellers being a banishing trade, it is great to order a cup of kopi and a slice of bread to relieve memories if you are around the Kovan area.

On yet another planned visit to Everton Park, I initially wanted to go to Nylon Coffee Roasters but they were closed by the time I had reached there so I went to Cozy Corner Coffee. Starting out with selling coffee and sandwiches, they eventually expanded to include certain mains such as pastas into their menu.

The Flat White ($4.50) tasted not bad with the right amount of milk added. However, it got slightly bitter near the last drop and I also noticed that the staff used Meiji Fresh Milk that is stored in its original bottle to be added into the espresso, which leads me to think whether the milk was steamed before being added into the espresso. Nonetheless, it didn’t affect much of its taste.

Consider this place for their sandwiches and mains if you are around here (but not the coffee as there are better alternatives to choose from around Everton Park unless they are closed)

Chocolate souffle tart! Smile Jan 17, 2014

After having my coffee at Cozy Corner Coffee, I went to The Audacious Cakery. Opened a year ago, they specialise in not only cakes and tarts, but also cupcakes, macaroons and certain savory bakes.

The Chocolate Souffle Tart ($6.80) is initially shown to be off the shelves but luckily they still had a few left in the kitchen (goes to show how famous these tarts are). Have it warmed up. It also comes with a layer of nuts on top. The chocolate tastes rich and even more with every bite. It is invigorating to have especially since it complements well with the souffle.

You can see how the chocolate is oozing out of the souffle!

If you are around Everton Park, consider coming to this place for its good selection of great tasting bakes!

Great ice cream and waffle! Smile Jan 06, 2014

For the full review and more photos, do visit http://makanarts.com/2014/01/06/beans-cream-block-347-bukit-batok-st-34/

It is not strange to see more newer eateries/cafes opening up in the HDB heartlands. Beans & Cream, that has recently opened up in Bukit Gombak, is one of such. With an increase in hype after Bryan Gan 老师 from Lady First Singapore (女人我最大新加坡), Bryan Gan, has requested and designed a custom ice cream flavor that is healthy and consisting of only real fruits, it is not hard to see why this place is still packed indoors with a long queue outside before closing hours.

Besides offering complimentary iced water, they also offer iced gem biscuits here!

The Waffles with Salted Caramel ($6.50) comes in a nice serving! Hearing that they have great waffles before coming, I have to agree that this is one of the better waffles I have had so far. Crisp on the outside, soft on the inside, and the Salted Caramel ice-cream (which is one of their newest flavors) tasted just right as well

If you are around the Bukit Gombak area, why not make a visit here? The ice cream and waffles here are certainly worth queuing for!

Great New York Pizza Smile Dec 17, 2013

For the full review and more photos, please visit http://makanarts.com/2013/12/17/the-manhattan-pizza-company-orchard-central/

One slice of pizza is about 10 inch, and is $5.40 for the classic range and $6.80 for the specialty range

The Roast Duck Pizza is rich on flavour and is generous with the amount of roast duck used into making the pizza. A very locally-infused flavour.

The Seafood Pizza is great. The taste of squid is very apparent amongst the other seafood available.

The Hot-Shot Spicy Drumlets tries to replicate the original buffalo wings. While not being exactly near in terms of spiciness and size, this still tasted rather spicy.

If you want an alternative to other fast foods around, this is a place to consider if you are within the Somerset area.
