Selected pastries from PrimaDeli.

This chessy mushroom puff is one of my favourite snacks.

Fresh from the oven every morning.

Flaky, buttery puff with plenty of mashed ingredients of minced onions with chopped mushrooms together with cheese fillings in each puff.

Priced: S$1.90.

Steamed Silver Promfret Smile Jan 23, 2014

Ah Orh Steamed Silver Promfret was tantalizingly fresh and yummy.

The fish steaming quintessentially teochew method using sour plums , salted vegetables and tomatoes wedges.

Steamed fish dishes has always been a premium item when we order from any zichar stalls or restaurants and the huge mark-up in pricing. There is no indication of exactly how much the fish will cost and always quoted as "market price".

This Steamed Silver Promfret cost S$68.00.

The steaming process is the key to a good cooked fish which is flaky and separating well the fish meat.

The fish sauce tasty and appetizing.

Out of the ten tables for lunch that day, eight tables had this dish on their table.

This family run restaurant has a long history with a humble beginning when they started out their business at Ellenborough Market at High Street and now at Block 115 Jalan Bukit Merah since the 1990s.

Offally Good Smile Jan 19, 2014

Xing Yun Kway Chap was previously from Tampines St 21 Coffeeshop.

Until now the standard of the offals prepared by this stall are still good but pricey.

The stall opened only on weekends.

I had to wait for almost half an hour before I placed my order for take-away.

The "kway" made from rice flour are soft in texture similar to kway teow.

The friendly lady boss preparing the food while her husband take a break.

For this plate of kway chap consisted of pork skin, pig big intestines and tow pok including a larger portion of the kway cost S$10.80.

Each item was packed separately and all I had to do was to reheat the sauces for my lunch.

I have specially ordered for additional pig big intestines and the most expensive of all ingredients.

A close-up of all the ingredients. Noticed the braised pig skin was soft and smooth like baby's skin.

The fatty tissues inside these large pork intestines taste better than the smaller ones.

Just yummy!

Appreciation Lunch at Saizeriya Smile Jan 12, 2014

OpenRice Singapore hosted an appreciation lunch to OpenRicers who attended the Rice and Shine Project. Bringing joy to the needy with rice contributions at Toa Payoh Community Club on Saturday, January 11, 2014.

OpenRice created a 3m x 3m Rice Mural of their smiley icon using expired rice that has already been coloured and volunteers together with the beneficiaries helped to accomplish the mission.

We had a sumptuous and array of yummy Italian cuisine from Saizeriya at Toa Payoh Central.

From the salad menu, we tasted three choices of fresh vegetables and ingredients for salad.

Salmon Salad – S$5.90 with a combination of iceberg and romaine lettuces, mini tomatoes and fresh big pieces of Norwegian Smoked Salmon.

Pomelo Salad – S$2.90 with freshly pieces of pomelo with balsamic vinegar mixed with extra virigin olive oil and black pepper. I find this salad a bit too sourish maybe a little added sugar would be better off to round out the dressing.

Northern shrimp cocktail salad – S$4.90 the ingredients are similar to the salmon salad with the exception of fresh translucent looking North Land Shrimps.

For savory and inviting Appetizers there were two orders of 8 pieces of Chicken Wings at S$7.90 per plate. The wings were tasty and well marinated prepared from Saizeriya special recipe.

Oven baked Asari Clams at S$3.90. The watery Asari Clams were pretty bland.

Two servings of oven baked Escargots in special garlic sauce which is also the in house No. 1 best seller.

There were generous amounts of rich flavoured garlic in each escargot. Just irresistibly yummy and at an affordable price of S$5.90 for 6 pieces per serving.

8 pieces of Mussels Marinara at S$5.90 cooked in tomato and garlic sauce. The sauce was too watery. It would taste better with thicker sauce and more minced garlic. The mussels were slightly chewy.

From the Steak and Hamburgers Menu, we tried the Beef Stew priced S$5.90.
Tender beef cubes mixed with selected vegetables such as carrots, big onions, celery and corn kernels with a satisfying flavour. This stew would go well with a hot bowl of plain rice.

Dining in an Italiana restaurant without a pizza order is just impossible. Therefore we had a serving of a 9 inch Chicken Curry Pizza priced S$7.90. The pizza has a combination of grilled chicken chunks drizzled with diced red and green bell peppers mixed with curry sauce. Good taste for a great combination.

There was also a plate of of Chicken Doria at S$4.90. The baked rice is cooked with chicken Bolognese and white sauce.

The plate of Paella with rich ingredient of squids, shrimps and mussels cooked with baked rice at affordable price of S$7.90 was the popular dish of the day.

The hallmark of this dish is that special layer of crispy caramelized rice at the bottom of the paellera.

We had four choices of desserts to the perfect ending of a good lunch.

Delicious and tasty Truffle Ice Cream at S$4.90.

A piece of Tiramisu Cake priced S$4.90. This traditional pudding like dessert consisting of a sponge cake dipped in a liquor and layered grated chocolate and rich custard.
The Italian pudding Panna Cotta at S$4.90 which is flavorful taste of egg and milk mixture.
The strawberry ice cream was rich and fruity at $1.90 per scoop.

This is in fact another food tasting and bonding session with new found friends from OpenRice and their Marketing Team.

Wishing the Management and Staff of OpenRice Singapore and fellow OpenRicers are very Happy and Prosperous Foodie Lunar New Year 2014 as we usher the Year of the Horse in less than three weeks time.

Newly opened Crystal Jade Hongkong Café now at Bedok Mall next to Tim Ho Wan.

Initially I mistook this café for Crystal Jade Restaurant with an opened concept dinning.

Impressed with the Lemongrass Chicken Chop Rice with black pepper sauce.
Price at S$8.90++ served with long beans, carrots and cauliflower.

The first taste of the pepper sauce was quite hot probably because I did not mixed the sauce well enough but subsequently the sauce infused to the chicken chop makes the combination very palatable.
The rice has a combination of fluffy white and brown rice mixture.
Though this dish is known as Lemongrass Chicken Chop Rice, I could not taste the lemongrass at all maybe due to the overdrowning of the black pepper sauce.

The Watercress with Honey Cold drink was very refreshing and cooling.
Priced at S$2.80++. A definite thirst quencher without too much of the taste of watercress.

The beef brisket with noodle served dry instead of soupy was good. The tasty beef cubes well marinated unlike the canned beef brisket served in some restaurants. Not overly cooked and textured. Preferably it would be better if the restaurant uses fresh noodles instead of instant noodles.

The service crews were very attentive and courteous.
