Nothing special OK Oct 29, 2013

Located at The Grandstand, Modern Asian Diner (MAD) is actually not very difficult to be traveled to as there is free shuttle bus services from Clementi, Botanic Gardens, Toa Payoh MRT stations & Bukit Timah Road. On top of that, it can be easily access via PIE if you are driving.

The renovation here is simple yet modern and the dim lighting also gives people a sense of privacy while dinning in the restaurant.
On top of that, ordering of food here is really modernized and frill free. At each table, there is an ipad which you can look at the picture of the food, order and confirm your order.

WAgyu Mantou burger($14) was rather interesting. Although it's a twist from the normal beef burger, I would appreciate the normal burger more as the mantou tends to stick to the teeth while we were having it. On top of that, we felt that the beef was slightly overcooked.

Prawn roll cheese ($5.50) is rather mediocre. Nothing much to be rave about especially when there isn't much of the cheese flavor.

Beancurb roll shrimp ($5.50) is rather average.

Overall it was a very average meal that I would have no intention of returning to the restaurant unless I would want to enjoy the ambiance there.

Spending per head: Approximately $15

Located at Raffles City Shopping mall basement one where there are an array of eateries, Sho Teppan is conveniently located near the city hall MRT station. During the F1 week, together with 2 other friends, we went there for dinner. We have ordered 1 Seafood shabu shabu ($17.90), 1 wagyu beef sukiyaki ($22.50) and 1 pork shabu shabu($15.90). In total, we spent $66.75 including GST and service charge.
Personally I felt that the service here wasn't too good and perhaps that's also due to lack of staff as there were only 2 staff working during the peak dinner time.
Sho Teppan has an option of letting the staff cook for you or you cook on your own when the food arrived.

The seafood served was fresh but the soup was rather bland even after cooking all the seafood.

The wagyu beef was very thinly sliced and was tender even after fully cooked.

The pork was thinly sliced as well.

Overall it was a very average dinner as the soup was bland and the meat was not seasoned. I would choose buffet steamboat over this any time for the price I am paying.

Spending per head: Approximately $22

New chillax coffee joint to go to Smile Oct 26, 2013

Categories : English | Burgers and Sandwiches

Located at Somerset 313, is a newly opened UK coffee joint. This is their fourth branch in Singapore. However do not underestimate this singapore's coffee joint newbie. as it is one of the largest coffee joint in UK. It is located just in front of Marche and has this unique comfortable deco that allowed people to chillax over a cuo of coffee. On top of that, it is strategically located near public transport and the exit to the discovery walk at 313 that it's rather hard to miss this cafe. Beside that, with pots of plants surrounding the cafe, it gives the customers some sort of privacy to enjoy the coffee there.

Similar to starbucks, it is basically self service here. However the cashiers and the barista here are very vibrant, bubbly and friendly. On top of that, they are very attentive and fast moving. Thus queue was very cleared quite quickly.

As I was dropping by after dinner thus I have only ordered a mango pistachio cake and a hazelnut latte ( Primo size aka smallest size). I was lucky as there is a promotion for every coffee paired with cake is only $10 from 6pm to closing.
Mango pistachio cake

Mango pistachio cake

The mango pistachio cake is a rather interesting. It was a twist from the normal mango cake that I have tried. It has a grainy nutty texture and there are small mango slices in the layer of mango cream. However the taste is just right, not too sweet.

Personally I like the hazelnut latte here as there was a strong nutty aroma of the hazelnut in every mouthful of coffee I drank. Beside that, there was a well balance between the coffee and hazelnut aroma. On top of that, the milky foam was really fluffy and the overall taste wasn't too sweet. I would highly recommend this drink for anybody who like hazelnut coffee.

Overall it was a good chillax experience at costa coffee and I would definitely visit this coffee joint again soon. Not only is the quality of the coffee, cake and service good, the environment here is also very inviting for people to catch up over coffee, chillax and laze the day away while people watching.

Roasted duck with a twist Smile Oct 25, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Beijing | Restaurant

At Tiong Bahru Plaza second level, there is an area with several restaurants located side by side of each other. One of them is Dian Xiao Er which was newly opened only in June this year. As a roasted duck lover, I was thrilled and I went there few weeks back.Upon stepping to the entrance of the restaurant, I was greeted by a friendly waitress whose uniform mimicked like the ancient china waiter (xiao er aka 小二). On top of that, the renovation of the restaurant made me feel as if I was transported back to the ancient china era where there are kunfu masters and swordmen.

However there are also a modern touch with the glass wall between the roasted duck preparation section and the restaurant that enticed passerby of the restaurant to come in and try the roasted duck.

The dishes of the night were assorted mushroom with broccoli ($13.30), Ginseng Roasted Duck ( $13.90), Marmite Chicken wings ($10.30), Old Style Steamed Sliced Fish ($12.30), a bowl of white rice ( $1) and 2 warm water ($0.60) with a total spending of $54.45

Ginseng Roasted Duck
I have ordered the small portion( there are 2 portion to choose from) but personally i find the portion quite big and is good for 2~3 pax if you order many dishes. The duck meat is really tender and with a very aromatic herbal smell. On top of that, the skin is crispy and the overall taste is a joy to the taste buds. Best of all, the gravy of the herbal duck goes really well with the rice. Thus I highly recommend anybody who order this to dish to order a bowl of rice to go with it. However to take note that the gravy is inclined to the sweet side, if you prefer something savory do seek advice from the serving crew for recommendations. =)

Marmite Chicken wings
This dish is quite interesting. Although it's named marmite chicken wings but what I had was drumlets which were deep fried and coated with a sweet tasting sauce and sesame seeds. However I like the idea that the meat was prepared in such a way that it has semi de-boned to the top of the drumlet. Thus it was very easy to eat it even if you are not a good chopstick user. =)

Old Style Steamed Sliced Fish
This is a beautiful dish that is steamed with many ingredients such as mushrooms, pork strips, spring onion..etc. The end product is a plate of fresh savory sliced fish that goes very well with some rice.

Assorted mushroom with broccoli
Personally I feel that this is a perfect dish for mushroom lovers. Beside having shitake mushroom, there also 2 other types of mushrooms. On top of that, the broccoli was cooked to perfection and went really well with the mushrooms or the gravy.

Overall it was a good dinning experience at Dian Xiao Er. Beside having friendly and helpful serving crews, the food was served quite swiftly without compromising with the quality of the food. On top of that, the waitress who served me even gave me advice so as not to over ordered. Thus making it a very pleasant and heartwarming dinning experience.

Food that don't turn cold easily Smile Oct 25, 2013

Categories : Noodles

Located at the basement of Bugis Junction , Hong Guo is quite prominent as it is near Itacho Sushi. Although the deco is rather simple with squarish tables and chairs, the food here is simply devilish.

I ordered SzeChuan Chicken($7.50),Scholar rice vermicelli (Zhuang Yuan Mian Xian $8.80 )Garlic cucumber ($3.80). All in all, I spent $23.66.

Garlic cucumber $3.80
I liked this side dish a lot as it was really flavorful with a tinge of spiciness. On top of that , the cucumbers were really crunchy and appetizing.

SzeChuan Chicken $7.50
This is another of my favourite as i like the fragrant from the SzeChuan herbs and seasonings used. Initially I was only tasting the crispy and tender chicken chunks. However, the spiciness of the peppercorn and chilli kicked in later which added an interesting finish punch to the food. I would strongly recommend this to anybody who loves spicy food but for those who can’t take spiciness, this might be a bit challenging.

Zhuang Yuan Mian Xian $8.80
This is the signature dish of the shop ,红锅过桥米线 (Cross Bridge Rice Vermicelli ) .They have 3 variety and I chose the one with the most ingredients. There are steps to eating this rice vermicelli. Beside the fun while eating this dish, I like the fact that the soup remained warm after a very long time. Well, as a food blogger, I like to take pictures of food that was served to me and most of the time, food turns cold after I have finished taking the pictures.Below is the video of how i eat my 过桥米线.

Overall , I think that the food at Hong Guo is good especially if you like you food hot after taking loads of food pics. On top of that, service here was rather attentive and good. Thus I am giving it a 8/10 .Do try it out if you have =)
