Great Value for $$ Smile Oct 16, 2013

Will go back and try the crab and other dishes. Very good value for $$.

The dishes to try are the 1) Mingzhu roll, 2) Homecard Beancurd, 3) Garlic Sauteed vegetables.

This is a very clean coffee shop that spans across a walkway. One section has air-conditioning and the other which we sat in is the al-fresco coffee shop style. Definitely good and economical for bringing parents and grandparents for a family meal.

The chef has been cooking professionally since he was 17. Since moving to Singapore in 2006, he had worked in reputable kitchens of Swiss’otel, St Regis, Il Lido and Absinthe (under Chef Francois Mermilliod). Whenever I speak to Johnny, he is very proud that he cooks in the classical French way, also meaning preparing everything from scratch!!! This means taking up to 6 hours just to extract duck fat to use as a base for other dishes. Time-consuming for a restaurant only ran by 2-3 people but the food is oh-so-yummy!!!

Most of my friends I have brought says French Ladle has the best:
1) French Onion Soup
2) Duck Confit
3) Pot-Au-Feu, in Singapore.

Personally find the coffee behind CSH, Broers but cool place to try once. Haven't tried the food though.

Long black – much more acidic than regular long black but strong flavor.

Flat white – one of my favorites other than nylons and broers. Mildly sweet, very slight nutty flavor despite being Meiji milk (usually only get this flavor with greenfields milk). Milky but still has that slightly bitter coffee kick at the end.

Latte – well balanced. Decently strong flavor although there is quite a lot of milk. Using genovese beans. But personally would prefer it with less milk.

We found the food quality esp the roast beef and Guinness pie good but it would have been really pricey without the palate promotion that gave us 33% off.

Try the Roast Beef – weekend only special. Meat was well done but it’s the sauce that made the dish special. Potatoes were well cooked with sweet flavour but not overdone till it’s soggy. Yorkshire pudding on the side made it extremely British.

Definitely a good place to bring parents and grandparents. They will enjoy the food and ambience.

Must say was really good value for money for the acclaimed best Hokkien restaurant in Singapore! My favourite for the night – Braised White Cabbage (with Chinese vinegar) 红烧白菜! Cabbage was soft but fibrous. There were these fried fish bits that added good texture to the dish, plus the vinegar blend sauce was simply da bomb!
