O'Rio Western Food Smile Dec 16, 2013

Categories : Coffeeshop | Pasta | Steaks and Grills

Now operating under the catchy stall name "O'Rio Western Food", this uncle and auntie team has returned after the Western food stall was briefly taken over by someone else after the coffee shop renovation several months ago.

They have the usual range of western fare such as Chicken Chop, Chicken Cutlet ($5.00), Fish & Chips ($5.00), and Spring Chicken ($7.50). There are also Spaghetti with Chicken ($3.00) or Beef ($4.00), as well as Fried Rice ($3.00). You can also get the Fried Rice with Chicken Chop, Fish & Chips or Chicken Cutlet ($6.00). Also available here are the Chicken Wings that you can buy at $1.00 each or Chicken Nuggets at $1.00 for 3 pieces per stick if you just want a snack. There is no pork dishes here, as stated on a "No Pork No Lard" sign prominently displayed on the other side of the stall.

We came here for dinner on a weekday night and was glad to learn that the spaghetti was available, since it was sold out the last time we came. On this trip, we got the Fish & Chips, Chicken Cutlet, Chicken Spaghetti and a stick of Chicken Nuggets.

Chicken Cutlet ($5.00)
This came in a big plate with a decent portion of chicken cutlet, french fries, buttered toast, coleslaw and baked beans. The chicken cutlet was crispy and we found it to be an improvement from our earlier visit here (a year or two ago) where it was a tad oily then. The one we had this visit wasn't too oily and we agreed that the portion was quite big too. The fries were crispy but soft inside which I personally liked, and it had just the right amount of saltiness for me. Coleslaw was quite decent too although the baked beans was the canned kind. The toast was quite average.

Fish & Chips ($5.00)
Like the chicken cutlet, this also came with french fries, buttered toast, coleslaw and baked beans but with two fried fish fillets instead. My mum is a fan of Fish & Chips and she thought this was quite okay. The only thing she didn't like was the mayonnaise, but fortunately for her they gave only a tiny serving of it and did not drizzle it over the fillets. Like me, she also enjoyed the fries, although she could not finish it as she was full from the two portions of fish fillets.

Chicken Spaghetti ($3.00)
The spaghetti was firm and slightly springy as were the chicken bits. The sauce was not too watery which we liked, but we found it to be a tad bland. This is good if you want a lighter tasting western food although serving was a tad big for me. I found this to be quite filling despite this being a simple dish. But no complaints since this was only $3.00 which we found pretty reasonable!

Chicken Nuggets ($1.00)
This stall replaced the kind of nuggets used a long while ago and I'm glad to say that I like the nuggets that they are currently offering. This was crispy on the outside with a slight crunch and I thought this was great to eat on its own or with their chilli sauce!

Overall, the taste and the portion given were quite decent for the price. I personally found the portion to be quite a lot for myself so I am always full whenever I eat at this stall. Out of the items on their menu, my favourites are the Chicken Nuggets, French Fries and Chicken Cutlet. Service was quite standard for a coffee shop stall and I thought it was nice of them to serve the food personally to the tables especially when many stalls were "self service". It was evident during the times we went that Auntie and Uncle were working hard to prepare the orders despite their ages so it was understandable if the food may take a while to arrive especially during peak hours!

All You Need is to Dip n Go! Smile Dec 14, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Burgers and Sandwiches

Dip n Go is a brand by Old Chang Kee aimed at selling fried snacks that you can eat on the go. This concept was clearly designed with convenience in mind, right down to the cleanly designed store, ordering process and even packaging!

There are two kinds of meals you can opt for here. The first is a "Signature Cup Meal" which comes with a main, dip and drink while the second is the "Combo Meal" which comes with a Main, Side, Rice, Dip and Drink. I've never tried their combo meals before as the few times I've been here it has always been to takeaway one of their Signature Cup Meal.

Ordering the Signature Cup Meal was a breeze. First, you get to choose from a variety of sides ranging from QQ Fries ($3.90) to Chicken Nuggets ($4.90) to Baby Squids ($5.90) and Fish Fingers ($5.90). Then you get to choose the sauce you would like to have with the food. There were sauces in a variety of flavours like Teriyaki, Wasabi, BBQ, Fiery Chilli and Cheese. Finally, you can opt for the usual drinks like Coke, Fanta Grape, Ice Lemon Tea or Passion Fruit. After paying at the counter, you have to wait at the side for your number to be called while the kitchen prepared the food. Waiting didn't take long when I went and the staff were also friendly and courteous.

Chicken Chunks Signature Cup Meal ($4.90)
This time round, I got the Chicken Chunks with the Teriyaki sauce and Passion Fruit to go! The chicken chunks were crispy, firm but juicy and the teriyaki sauce was just the right amount of sweetness for me. I have also tried other combinations such as the QQ fries and Chicken Nuggets with Cheese and Barbeque sauce. A popular combination would surely be the fries with cheese while the chicken chunks definitely go well with BBQ or Teriyaki. The ability to mix and match though, means that you can just get whatever you fancy, like the time I got chicken nuggets with cheese! lol

Price was quite okay starting at $3.90 for the fries set, although the chicken chunks and chicken nuggets set cost $4.90 which I personally found to be a tad pricey for just a few pieces of chicken with sauce and soft drink. You can prolly get a nugget set meal for more or less the same price at fast food restaurants like McDonalds. What I didn't like was that there was no option to exclude the drink and just get the food and sauce for cheaper, but this was the way the takeaway concept was designed to be at Dip n Go.The hassle-free container was certainly designed for one to eat on the go and it was also great to keep afterward for reusing!

Price aside, this is a very convenient snack to have while on the go because all you need to do is to Dip and Go!

Old Chang Kee is a long time favourite of my mum's and I have had my fair share of trying out their food, like curry puff, chicken nuggets and fish balls, every time she would takeaway some back for snacking at home. It has been quite a long time since I last had their chicken mushroom puff and decided on a whim to try it again.

Perhaps as a testament to Old Chang Kee's popularity, there was a long queue forming when I went on a Tuesday's evening. However, the three staff manning the counter were fast and efficient so the queue moved quickly enough and I didn't have to wait long for my turn. The staff were also friendly and courteous despite the queue. Having already made up my mind earlier, I got the Chicken Mushroom O', Gyoza and Cheezy Chicken Balls to go.

Chicken Mushroom O' ($1.40)
The Chicken Mushroom O' did not disappoint. A very fragrant aroma waft out immediately upon opening and I was heartened to see that there was a generous amount of filling in it. The chicken chunks were big and tender too. The pastry skin were crisp and buttery and did not become soggy despite the chicken stock inside. Overall, it was like eating the puff version of chicken pie! Tasty!

Cheezy Chicken Balls ($1.60) - on the right
The cheezy chicken ball on-stik was another hit in my book. The chicken balls were chewy and juicy and the cheese didn't overwhelm. Just be careful when biting into the balls as the cheese, which was a little runny, had the tendency to squirt out! I thought these felt really bouncy. I was kind of tempted to throw them around on the table just to see if they would really bounce... but of course the only bouncing they eventually did was in my stomach. lol

Gyoza ($1.40)
The gyoza on the other hand wasn't as good as I expected. It was a little oily and while the skin was crispy, the vegetable filling was somehow too mushy and reminded me of slightly rotten vegetables. The taste was nothing exceptional either.

Overall, I paid $4.40 for 3 items. The price may be a little pricey for each item, especially if you have a tendency to buy a bunch of them at one go like my mum, but I find some of the food like the Curry O', Chicken Mushroom O', Cheezy Chicken Balls and Fishballs to be worth buying, especially when having them as an occasional treat!

Lontong Smile Nov 11, 2013
Categories : Malay | Coffeeshop

This Malay food stall is a new addition to the recently renovated coffee shop at this block. They have the usual range of Malay food such as Lontong ($2.50), Mee Rebus Jawa ($2.50), Mee Siam ($2.50), Nasi Lemak ($3.00), Nasi Sambal Goreng ($3.50), Mee Soto ($3.00) and Laksa ($3.50). My mum has tried their food previously and is particularly fond of a few dishes, such as the Lontong.

I have never tried their food before, so on my mum's recommendation, I decided to give the Lontong ($2.50) a try. The dish came with pressed rice pieces, vegetables, a whole hard-boiled egg and a generous dollop of sambal, which added a dash of flavour to the dish. The rice was thick but bland when eaten on its own, but overall, it was quite spicy and flavourful when eaten with the gravy mixed with sambal. It also wasn't too oily for a Malay dish. For $2.50, I thought it was rather a reasonable price to pay!

Service was decent even though there was a slight queue on a weekend morning. The stall owners were friendly and prepared the order pretty quickly despite the small crowd. The place was also clean and neat too as the coffee shop has just been renovated not long ago. I'd love to come back and try their other dishes, such as the Mee Soto, in future!

Crazy for those Ya Kun Kaya Balls Smile Nov 02, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Singaporean | Coffeeshop

Well, everyone knows Ya Kun for its kaya toast. As a testament of its popularity, the branch at Causeway Point was packed even though my mum and I went there at 3pm!

My mum got the Set A Value Meal ($4.60) which comes with the Kaya toast with Butter, coffee and soft boiled egg. She requested for the lady to exclude the butter, since she loves having her toast with just the plain old kaya. The lady was willing to accommodate her request, which was a plus for service in my book.

The toast is usually made on the spot with each order, so we had to wait a while for it. But there were the coffee and soft-boiled egg to start on first while we waited.

The toast eventually came and while the dish looked simple, the taste more than made up for it. The toast was crispy and the combination with their kaya spread was just lovely! I wished they put more of the kaya in the bread though; I wouldn't have minded a kaya overload! lol

I also got the Kaya Balls, which are like mini pancakes with kaya filling, and comes at the price of $3.30 for 8 pieces. This is one of my favorite food on their menu. The balls were served in a little basket, which I thought was cute. They were cooked until crispy on the outside but still maintained the softness on the inside (and towards the bottom). At first I thought 8 pieces were too much for tea, but I ended up eating all of it! I love munching on these and savouring the taste of kaya in each ball. I think these would make a wonderful snack at any time of the day!

If you have not tried these yet, I'd recommend giving it a try, along with their standard kaya toast! It's more value for money to get the kaya toast as a set with the coffee and egg. Just don't expect any cozy ambience to enjoy your meal in, since it can get really noisy when it's packed!
