Crispy Bites Smile Apr 26, 2012

Categories : Bakery

This outlet serves tasty traditional bites such as ''You Tiao'' and ''Goreng Pisang''.
It is difficult to find this type of outlet in a shopping mall these days.
Most of them are in the hawker centres.

The bites are prepared fresh and hot, right before your eyes!
''You tiao'' is my all time favourite. This one is tasty and crispy and just melts in your mouth.
It's not too oily and absolutely delicious.

The Goren Pisang is equally good. It has been dipped in lots of batter before being fried.
The batter is crunchy and that's my favourite part.
The banana I had was a small one and sweet and yummy!

I will definitely go back to try more bites such as the ''Samosa" and ''Butterfly'' .
The service at the stall is fast and good. Of course, the ''You-Tiao'' runs out really fast, so, sometimes, you have to wait a while as they prepare a fresh batch.

Closer to closing time, there are some offers and discounts as well.

Healthy Fast Food Smile Apr 26, 2012

Categories : American | Fast Food | Ice Cream and Gelato | Burgers and Sandwiches | Kids-Friendly

Who says that Fast Food is always unhealthy?
McDonald's allows special orders that make meals healthier.

This outlet at Serangoon Gardens has had some minor refurbishment done, and has more comfortable seats now. it is more like a McCafe now and there are more cushioned seats.

We ordered the Filet O Fish meal. This meal usually comes with a Filet-O-Fish, fries and a Coke. We requested lettuce to be added to the burger.
A usual Filet O Fish has a fish fillet, slice of cheese and tartar sauce.
Adding the lettuce makes it healthier and tastier.
Although fish burgers do not come with letuce, you can ask for it, at no extra charge!

We asked to change the fries to Corn Cup (hot corn).
The Corn Cup is a healthier alternative - piping hot cup of corn served with butter.
Of course you can eat it plain, no need for the butter. That's much healthier.
No fries, though fries are yummy, too, but, if you're on a diet, this is much better.

We also changed the drink to a healthier Pure Orange Juice.
This Orange Juice is unsweetened and

That's what I like best about McDonald's - the flexibility.

We also tried one of the new items - Chicken McBites - these come in 10s or 20s.
We tried the 20s. These are like tiny nuggets that have been specially seasoned.
The McBites taste great on their own, without any dip or chillin sauce.

The service at the restaurant is very good and the staff are very accommodating to requests. Of course, the corn cup and lettuce are substituted at no extra charge,
but there's a slightly extra charge for the Orange Juice.

Well, a little bit more for a healthier change, so that's ok.
I am no longer guilty about having Macs again, as long as healthier options are
available! tongue

Jack Never Fails to Delight! Smile Apr 26, 2012
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : American | Steaks and Grills

Jack's place has always been a special place to dine for many years now.
Jack's has been around for quite a long time.
I recall that it has been around since my secondary school days.

Nowadays, the menu has been revamped to include upscale and exotic items like lobster.
However we settled for the more mundane ones as we were not adventurous enough, yet!

We started with homemade Mushroom soup with Garlic Bread.
Of course, the soup is a speciality of this restaurant and a must-have!
For drinks we got a pot of Twinings Peach Tea - full of flavour and a lingering fragrance indeed. One pot is enough for two to share.tongue

We ordered two sides - Calamari rings and Mixed Garden salad.
The Calamari rings were great with the tartar sauce on the side. Likewise, our favourite dressing for the salad was thousand island. The salad was fresh and contains cruchy lettuce. capsicum, pineapple slices, olives and tomatoes.

I decided on something more traditional - Fried Rice with seafood.
It was ok, nothing really extra special about it, though.
Perhaps Jack's main plus is in western, and, not local foods.
The Lamb Chops did not disappoint, they were delicious and full of flavour.
The mint sauce was an added complement to the dish.

Overall the food was good and the ambience was cozy.
However, the restaurant, with its traditional decor, is looking a little old-fashioned and not as new and fashionable as a new restaurant. After all this location is quite a new one. Perhaps something could be done to spruce up the decor a little.

For the prices charged, I feel the restaurant could be made more cozy.
The staff are prompt and attentive. They are always around to assist and advise!

Tasty Treats @ Pow Sing Smile Apr 26, 2012
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Hainanese | Chicken Rice

Pow Sing used to be a regular haunt, but, after the renovation, somehow, it doesnt seem the same, in terms of space and layout (I still prefer the old layout.)
Perhaps there are professional reasons.

Nevertheless, their menu did not change. In fact there are a few new items.
Other than the Chicken rice and Chicken noodle, the Salted Fish Fried Rice and the Braised Hokkien Noodle (without pork) are our favourite dishes. The Baby Kailan with garlic is another must-have.

The Salted Fish Fried Rice (as the name implies) contains generous amounts of sliced salted fish, tiny prawns, egg and vegetables. Every mouthful is full of flavour and great taste. The Braised Hokkien Noodle contains a generous amount of seafood such as sliced fish, prawn and squid. The Baby Kailan with garlic complements the other two dishes well. In fact it goes well with most of the other dishes, be it the rice or noodle dishes, even the Chicken Rice.

The prices are a little steep, but the portions are slightly above average, so it is ok to come here once in a fortnight or a month. Perhaps the prices could be readjusted or the portions could be made slightly bigger .

Laksa Again! Smile Apr 26, 2012   (Related Review)

Categories : Singaporean | Fusion | Restaurant | Noodles | Kids-Friendly

Having been to Laksania once, we have been convinced that it is definitely worth another visit. With the interesting variations of Laksa concoctions available, you will never get bored of the choices.

This time we tried the Laksa Chicken Spaghetti and Chicken Nuggets.
We also had the Long Black (coffee) with warm milk on the side.

The Laksa Chicken Spaghetti was absolutely Mmmmm!!
It was basic spaghetti with diced pieces of chicken and smothered with a thicker version of the laksa gravy and garnished with lots of tiny curry leaves.
It was really good to the last drop!
The Chicken Nuggets - with the laksa flavour - were good, but after trying the spaghetti, there was nothing else better. tongue

Visiting Laksania is like a family affair. You will realise that almost 80% of the diners have been there before and everyone is well-versed with the routine of ordering - ticking your order items off on the menu and then proceeding to the counter to place your order.
The staff are polite and ensure that all orders are properly delivered to the diner's table.
The seating arrangement is a little messy; perhaps that could be improved upon. However, that's a really minor issue, given the fabulous dishes tongue

I will definitely go back to try as many variations as possible.
Truly every Laksa Lovers haven.
