Beancurd Roll OK Dec 31, 2013

Top: Chives Beancurd Roll, Bottom: Beancurd Skin Roll

Decided to get some of my favourite Beancurd Skin rolls at Ho Kee Pau but the stall only left one piece so I ordered a Beancurd Chives roll. Both of them are equally oily but I prefer the Beancurd Skin Roll cause the taste is not as heavy as the Beancurd Chives roll. The latter had a strong chives taste, and although I can tolerate the taste well if it is used as a minor ingredient, it was very overwhelming and even my sister who took a bite didn’t like it. The Beancurd Skin roll was slightly better, with little prawns and meat in it. Quite crunchy with the fried beancurd skin.

Hor Fun Mango Dessert OK Dec 31, 2013

Had desserts with my sister after shopping around IMM. We decided to try the desserts at Hong Kong Sheng Kee Desserts and ordered the Sheng Kee Mango Hor Fun ($5.90). Quite interesting considering there is hor fun in your desserts.

Anyway it turns out the hor fun is actually made of jelly with some chewy and sweet texture. Not too bad but a bit difficult to eat when you are trying to scoop the “hor fun” using your spoons. The dessert came with mango, strawberry and pomelo bits. Luckily the pomelo did not taste very bitter but the mango is super sour! Quite a contrast to the otherwise sweet dessert.

Though impressed by the hor fun, I was a little disappointed by the sour mango. Portion is a little small too.

The Soup Spoon Union is actually a union of 3 restaurants, namely the said Soup Spoon, The Handburger and the Soup Broth Asia. They have an open concept kitchen where you can see the chefs working around preparing the dishes.

The restaurant boosts a combined menu with an infographic at the back which explains how you go about ordering your food. I ordered 2 slider burgers ($3.50 each) – Battered Dory and Caesar Chicken and one Mocha ($4.80). After placing my order at the cashier, I am handed this disc-like thing to be placed on the table. I thought I will collect my food once it starts blinking because it is an electronic device but the food was served to me. Hmm.

I tried the Chicken Cesar but decided to order it again for my sister to try since I thought it was nice. I like the burgers as they are toasted with butter and cheese at the undersides. Really yummy. It is a bit messy when eating this mini version of the Handburger. Its over in a few mouthfuls but it is good if you do not want a full meal.

The Mocha came in a cup which I thought looked pretty cool but it looks like it has seen better days. Anyway I was a bit disappointed cause I thought there would be some cool latte art like what was featured on the menu but didn’t have any. Still. The coffee is served lukewarm. Nothing to rave about.

Overall I like the restaurant concept and would definitely return for a mix of soups, burgers and noodles. There is also no service charge and for the nice ambience, why not?

Loaf Cakes OK Dec 31, 2013   (Related Review)

I always like to browse around at Dessert Cup for their pretty and colourful desserts. While I was there I decide to buy some cakes back and got Choco Banana, Toasty Almonds and Yuzu Citrus. They were going 3 for $10. If bought individually it is $4 each.

Initially I was quite skeptical that the Choc Banana would not have the banana taste but I was surprised by the strong choc-banana taste at the first bite. It is really nice. The Toasty Almond is my favourite, having a slight sweet plus the almond smell. Last but not least, the Yuzu Citrus. True to its name, it has a slight citrus taste and I like that they use Yuzu instead of Lemon or Lime which is like too common. Provides a unique twist to the citrus cake.

Croissants Smile Dec 31, 2013

Categories : Fusion | Bakery

Unlike its name and logo, Tiong Bahru Bakery serves croissants and other French pastries and breads. I decided to get their Mini Croissant ($1.80) and Mini Chocolate Croissant ($2.20).

Their croissants are very flaky and not of the soft variety. The buttery taste is not very strong either. The chocolate croissant actually tastes like the original flavour croissant and only differentiates itself by its appearance and the thin layer of chocolate at the middle of the pastry. The chocolate is really strong and a little bitter. It did not taste like it is made with cheap chocolate.

Not too bad and I may return to try their other pastries and of course their coffee.
