My New Favorite Breakfast Spot! Smile Jan 13, 2014

It was a Saturday morning and we decided to try out the newly opened Ya Kun Family Cafe at West Mall. While other shops were still closed, this restaurant was already filled with early birds enjoying their hearty breakfast. There were indoor seats and outdoor seats, we chose indoor.

Their kaya toast with butter set ($4.6) comes with 2 pieces of kaya toast, 2 half-boiled eggs and a cup of milk tea. Each slices of bread was sliced at the middle to two with kaya spread and slices of butter in between. The toasts crumbled so easily that we left crumbs all over the table (messy food always taste better!). However, it was not as crunchy as I would have expected (or was it because I was too busy capturing the perfect image of this wonderful stack of bread to the point of missing out the golden moment of enjoying the toast??).

The half-boiled egg was runny. I like to add a dash of pepper and generous amount of dark soy sauce to the egg before mixing them together and gulped down immediately!

The gravy for mee rebus ($4.8) has a rich peanut taste. It was quite starchy at first, and then became diluted as it getting cold. We may not come back for their mee rebus I think.

These were cold silky barley ($2.5) and hot milk tea. Do you notice the white color flakes in the barley drink? Those were Fu Chok, or dried bean curd (the type that is thin and crumbles easily, meant for sweet dessert), it added a velvety and silky texture to the barley drink!

Unlike other Ya Kun Kaya Toast, this Ya Kun Kaya Family Cafe serves more variety of food. It will certainly become one of my favorite weekend breakfast spots!

This coffeeshop was extemely crowded during Sunday morning. However, this Delisnacks stall does't appeal to me at all as you can see that there wasn't much food left on display.

I wasn't planning for something fried too but as I saw few people at the table happily munching away you tiao, I finally gave in to my temptation... Surprisingly, the you tiao was crunchy at the outside while soft within, thumbs up Delisnacks!

Indian food Smile Jan 13, 2014

We had passed by this restaurant many times but had yet to try it. Today we decided to give it a go. This is a two-storey restaurant, there are outdoor seats at the first floor and air-conditioned dining area on the second floor. The view on the first floor wasn't fantastic, so we decided on indoor.

To me, Indian food isn't complete without a cup of mango lassi ($3.8). It is a blend of mango, milk and yoghurt. One cup is never enough! Beware that it is usually a very sweet drink, sending your blood sugar sky high.

This was a big piece of garlic naan ($2.5) being cut into two. It was fragrant and chewy in texture. I am a big fan of naan, I can even eat it plain!

The south Indian meal - veg ($5.8) comes with many small dishes. From left are soup, yoghurt, curry, vege, beetroot and dessert, served with a piece of crispy papadum. Indian cuisine is characterised by its unique blend of herbs and spices, the extensive use of herbs and spices also contributes to its exotic and intense flavor.

This is Chapatti set ($4.5), it comes with Channa Masala and some tomatoes and pickled onion. Chapatti is a round flat unleavened bread made of wheat flour. It tastes rather bland and I would prefer to spread some gravy or meat on top and roll them into tortilla.

The half Tandoori Chicken ($10.50) that we ordered looks very charred. The marination was fine but some parts of chicken were really hard and dry. I habitually picked out all the charred part and it took quite a while for this dish.

Overall, the dishes was decent (except the charred part). I will probably come back again but will try some other dishes instead.

Have you been to a farm in Singapore? I haven't, not until now! The Bollywood Veggies is a ten-acre farm, located at Kranji. There are wide variety of plantations there, ranging from flowers, herbs and spices to fruit trees. You can take a relaxing stroll in the farm while enjoying the greenery. Depending on the season, they will harvest some of their fruits or vegetables for sale on site.

Poison Ivy Bistro is located inside Bollywood Veggies, near the entrance. It has a rather rustic countryside setting. We had a peaceful and relaxing dining experience there. Despite the secluded location, their business seems good! When we finally finished our stroll and decided it was time to fill up our stomachs, we were told that the indoor dining area was fully booked, and it was during a weekday lunch time!

Their menu was written on this big black board.

Get revitalised with these Cold Lemongrass Drink ($2) and Hot Fig Tea ($2)! They were refreshing and most importantly, not those artificially sweet beverages and you will be able to taste the natural wonder of the ingredients inside.

We ordered a salad - Roasted Pumpkin with Parmesan Cheese and Roast Corn ($8). The dressing served was mint yoghurt. Pumpkin was sweet and roasted until tender, with a hint of balsamic vinegar.

I was slightly taken aback by the name of this curry, it is called Warrior's Chicken Curry ($10). Turned out that it was not as spicy as I thought, but the sauce was thick enough to my liking. I poured it all over my rice.

Farm minestrone soup with bread - the consistency of this soup is thicker than what we usually have. The bread, instead of being dipped inside the soup, I used it to wipe clean the curry sauce!

This was the Twice Cooked Pandan Lemongrass Kampong Chicken ($14), under the Ang Mo Specials. The chicken was a tad dry but the marination was flavorful. We saw few feathers left on the chicken though.

Taste-wise, the food here is slightly above average. Experience-wise, surrounded by the greenery, away from the bustle of the city life, no wonder despite the secluded location the place was almost full house.

I will be back, for sure! Smile Jan 10, 2014

I always love Malaysia food, so flavorful and full of variety. When Malaysia Food Street opened at the Resort World Sentosa, I went, but it was too far for me. Now that there is another Malaysia food place opened at West, I will certainly be back for more!

This is Penang Fried Kway Teow. The queue was always very long, but today, we made up our mind to try it no matter what. Since we had queued for so long, we ordered the biggest portion. tongue There is no 'ham', but lots of tauge and prawns.

This is Malaysia version of Hokkien Mee, thick noodle was used, and the noodle was stir fried in dark sauce, with lots of lard. It was very fragrant, but certainly not for the health conscious one...

Lastly, chicken rice, ordered by a friend so didn't get to try it. The chicken looks tender though.

The place was always crowded, so be prepared to wait for at least 5-10 minutes for your seat. There is no high chair provided too.
