Soi Thai, Soo Good Smile Feb 25, 2014
Categories : Thai | Restaurant

Lunch at Soi Thai. Heard that the food served were nice so we went.

We found an empty table and seated ourselves. Not long after a waitress came with the menu. We wrote our own order and took water for ourselves.

Ordered Olive Rice. The rice was a little salty but you could taste the olives. I like the rice mixed together with the nuts, chili, onion and lime. Made it more tasty. I'm glad there was the cucumber as it help cooled my mouth due to all the spiciness.

This was my first time eating pad thai was a little disappointed when I realized it was not spicy since I love spicy food. It was not bad. It kinda felt like I was eating cha kuay teow.

The clear tom yum soup was the best thing that we ordered. Really love the soup. Spicy, sour and just so flavorful. You won't regret ordering it. I'll definitely be back for the soup!

Fresh Fruit Juice Smile Jan 29, 2014
Categories : Hawker Centre | Juices

There are many drink stalls in Newton. I went around dinner time. Ordered Carrot and Orange Juice ($3).

Love the combination. Fresh and sweet. Thy Joy Fruits & Juice not only sell fruit juice but hot and canned drinks as well. I came here previously and ordered Green Apple and Celery Juice($3) which was refreshing while my friend ordered Lime Juice($2).

The aunty running the stall was also nice enough to give me some suggestion on what combination of fruits were nice.

Advice: Juice we(mostly myself) usually drink either comes from carton or from syrup and not from the fruit source itself. So go order the fruit juice when you are there as it is fresh.

Vegetables sushi Smile Mar 23, 2014
Categories : Vegetarian

Came here for lunch because I wanted to try their Vegetable Sushi.

Looked at the menu and decided to order the today's special- Organic Angel Hair with Curry Pork Chops($7). It was quite tough for me to order as the person was speaking chinese. With my poor chinese I could not really read all the words. Luckily I had my friend ZQ who helped me order.

The dish comes with free soup. The soup came quite fast. Less than 3 minutes after we ordered.

The soup has a lot of ingredients inside-carrots, cabbage, sprouts etc.. You would expect a flavorful soup but to my disapointment it was not. It was kind of plain despite having a lot of ingredients boiled together. However my friend said it was comforting.

My meal finally came. Quite fast as well. The pasta was overcooked. It was really soft like mee sua(chinese noodle). The curry tasted like those kind of curry you would dip with bread. The broccoli was cooked well. The pork chop was breaded and fried. It was the nicest thing in the dish, maybe because it's deep fried? I like that they included tomato in the dish because it helped give some acidity to the heavy sweet curry. So whenever I get overwhelmed by the curry I would eat the tomatoes to help refresh my palate.

The highlight of the entire meal- Organic Vegetable Sushi Roll($4). A mixture of organic vegetables with some sweet sauce. It tasted like normal rice sushi. There was the vinegary taste(the nice kind) you would get when you eat normal sushi even though there was no sushi rice. Maybe it came from the sauce. The vegetable also provided the cold freshness just like a normal sushi. Also it was very crunchy. I love this a lot and would definitely come here just for this vegetable sushi.

Nice Little Japanese Shop Smile Mar 11, 2014
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Japanese

The place that I wanted to eat was closed so I decided to eat at Japanese Curry Express instead. It was quite awkward as my friend and I were the only customer there. The atmosphere there was quiet, just the sound of the air-con. But with determination to eat Japanese food, we walked into the shop.
There were two people working in the shop. One in the front while the other in the kitchen.

The menu was placed on the table but if you needed another one you could ask for it or take another located next to the cash register.

Menu

I think that they offer quite a lot of choices despite the small size of the shop. Around 32 items to choose from. Drinks available are soft drinks- 100 plus, green tea, lemon tea etc..($1.50)
Salmon Mentai Maki

Salmon Mentai Maki

When I saw the menu I knew what I wanted- Sushi! I wanted to try all their sushi but they only had enough rice to make 2 more. ): But 2 is still good. We ordered Salmon Mentai($8.50) and Ebi Mango Maki($9). The salmon mentai maki is crabmeat and cucumber topped with salmon and a spoon of creamy cod roe, lightly torched. The sushi was yummy, although I had tastier ones before but still, it was worth it.
Ebi Mango Maki

Ebi Mango Maki

Next came the Ebi Mango Maki, deep fried prawn with mango, topped with tobiko, drizzled with mayonnaise and some sesame seeds. Presentation of the dish looked great. The mango was quite mild. Fried ebi and sushi just go so well together.
Hiyashi Ramen

Hiyashi Ramen

The Hiyashi Ramen($6.50) consisted of chilled ramen noodles with slices of naruto, cucumber, pork and crabmeat with some sauce that tasted a little like sesame sauce used in Chinese cooking. It is a very refreshing dish.
Pork Katsu Curry Rice

Pork Katsu Curry Rice

Well how can you not order a curry dish in a place called Japanese Curry Express? I ordered the Pork Katsu Curry Rice($6.50). Curry and pork were average, nothing above average.

What I enjoyed eating here was the sushi and that there is no service charge or GST. Will definitely be back to try more of their maki!

Sweet traet Smile Feb 25, 2014
Categories : Ice Cream and Gelato

Was nearby and my friend suggested we come here for ice cream!
There were around 10 different flavors such as Shy Green Nut(had pistachio nut which gave a nutty flavor and crunch) and Salty Malty(mild horlick taste with sea salt).
Salted caramel (double scoop)

Salted caramel (double scoop)

I chose Salted Caramel in the end. I bought the double scoop($6) one and shared it with ZQ. I like the gooey consistency however the gelato sweetness was a little too much for me. That being said, the salted caramel was nice and I would buy again when I'm near there.
They provide free water which was good as it helped me washed away the sweetness.
Tables are limited, around 3(non air-conditioned). Hence it might not be suitable for big groups that would like to eat there.
