Pocket-friendly Sushi OK Dec 25, 2011
Categories : Japanese | Restaurant | Sushi/Sashimi

This place has become a regular dine-out for my family and I for the simple reason that of all the casual Japanese diners that we have come across, this scores the best in terms of food quality and price. Plus, I just adore sitting by the conveyor belt and watching plate after plate of delectable sushi parade past me. I mean, who could sit and watch food and NOT be happy, right

Some of our regular orders are the Agedashi Tofu, Swordfish Sashimi and Grilled Mackerel. The Grilled Mackerel never fails to hit the spot with its crispy skin and flavourful flesh. Remember to give a light squeeze of lemon over the top to further enhance the freshly-grilled aroma, and down it with a pinch of chopped daikon (white radish), yum! I have recently taken a novel liking for Scallop Sashimi but every time I try to order that, the waiter informs us that it is unavailable, which is starting to annoy me a bit. sad Maybe its time to start scouting for a place that actually sells what is written on the menu, but till then, we'll still be satisfying our sushi cravings here.

Apparently, this cosy little white-washed cafe is the first Singapore franchise of a modern-concept Italian ice cream cafe. It sells good, authentic gelato in flavours that pack a punch. My vote goes to their Salty Peanut and Blueberry Cheesecake. I had a taste of their Whisky Cream, and trust me when I say it is strong. Same goes to their coffe drinks, so if you're looking for a good mid-day jolt, you should check them out. But what really sets them apart is that they offer soft-serve yoghurt and gelato too (albeit in much more limited flavours). That's not something you see in every gelato store. My friends and I had a go at their waffles too, looked good but it wasn't crispy enough for my liking. Nontheless, their traditional gelato is good enough to have me camping in there with a good book all Sunday afternoon , if only it were nearer my home.

Black Coffee Dessert Bar  OK Dec 24, 2010
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Café | Desserts and Cakes

I recently got a voucher to this place, and since i was in the area today, I decided take the opportunity to use it.

Before i touch on the food, i must say that this place is the perfect hideout from all the hustle and bustle in the middle of town. Located just at the entrance of SomersetTripleOne (the builiding beside Scape Youth Park), Black Coffee Dessert Bar provides a peaceful setting for those who are seeking to escape the drowning crowd and noise outside. Great for quiet dates and client meetings (or any other situations in which you actually need to be heard).

It was happy hour (5-8pm Mon-Fri, 2 for $10 hosuepour) so me and company got ourselves a gin and whisky to unwind ourselves for the day. Being full from dinner, we decided to share a piece of carrot cake that the staff reccommended. That was before i eyes the red velvet cake on display, which i am going to save for my next visit. Nothing much to say about the alcohol because it's pretty much the same where ever we go. The cake sat well with us - moist and not too dense, with a fair amount of raisins and walnuts and, wait, was that pineapple chunks i thought i tasted?? My only critique would have to be about the texture, which i thought was a tad too coarse. Oh, and less mascarpone in my frosting please, but that's just a personal preference.

Other than that, the cafe also offers a range of drinks and solids, including an all-day breakfast menu. Prices lean toward the higher side, but service is also one above what you would get at your regular Starbucks of Coffee Bean stalls.

You can check out their menu here: http://www.thisisblack.com.sg/menu

The Patissier Smile Jan 20, 2012

Used to pass by this shop on my way to work and would salivate but never got around to try the cakes here. Fianally decided to get a whole cake from them for my dad's birthday. Was told that the Passionfruit Meringue was their specialty, and so I placed a order for that. Apparently you are supposed to eat it on the day itself, otherwise the texture would not be the same anymore. Slightly crispy on the outside, soft on the inside and with a layer of sponge. We kept some leftovers till the next day, but it still tasted just as awesome to me. I just wish the cake was taller.

For those making a trip to get their single slices, it is advisable to go earlier in the day. Most of their cakes are usually sold out by late afternoon.

For a good cuppa Smile Jan 04, 2012

The last time I was here with a friend, I had a simple Hot Chocolate (comes with two mini cookies) and my friend had a Toffee Choc Frappe. Hot Chocolate could have done with a bit more chocolatey taste. From what I had, it tasted just like cocoa powder with milk, lots and lots of milk.

I visit tcc quite often with my family. Their Caramel Ginger Crumble Crush is a winner for me, on days I don't mind the caffeine. I just wish they would up their glass sizes a bit, afterall $8 for a drink is pretty hefty. If you're here for a bite, you've got to try their Shrooms Bite. Honestly, it's flaky, buttery pastry oozing with creamy mushroom filling will take you to heaven and back. Unfortunately, I don't have a picture of these with me, but you could visit their website and take a look.
