Good choice of vegetarian food Smile Apr 26, 2012

My mother-in-law is a vegetarian, so we brought her to this vegetarian restaurant located at Quality Hotel to have buffet dinner to celebrate her birthday. We parked our car at the basement carpark (no parking redemption) and took a lift up to the restaurant at second level.

Their buffet spread consists of: drinks( hot and cold),hot food section,a live laksa and chicken rice section, soup section and dessert section.

To my surprise, their laksa and chicken rice taste so close to non-vegetarian version, laksa gravy was thick and fragrant and the chicken rice chilli went well with the vegetarian chicken pieces. Oh, so sorry that I forgot to take pictures to show you all because did not plan to write review on vegetarian food at first.tongue

For the dessert section, ice-cream and red bean soup was available on that day. I like the red bean soup, it was cooked with 桂皮, the fragrant of these makes the red bean soup very delicious.

Probably because I am a meat eater, I find the rest of the hot food taste ok only, not to my liking, but it is ok to eat it once in a while to "cleanse our body".

My family of five prefers this outlet to the other one at Orchard because of ample parking lots during the weekends. We have visited this restaurant a couple of times before. It was frustrating queueing for parking lots during peak hours at busy districts like Orchard Road.

The restaurant is conveniently located right in front of the parking lots, so we can just park our car and walk over to dine. The place has glass panels spanning from the ceiling to the floor which allows eaters to enjoy the view outside while they're having their meal.

For a start, we ordered two types of soup base, namely wild mushroom and spicy ma-la soup. These two soup bases are pre-included in the buffet price, but you can add $4-$6 to have other soup bases. I like the wild mushroom soup base as the mushrooms' fragrance and taste are strong but not overpowering.

We are entitled to pick 5 items from their starters or house specials prior to having our steamboat and this is already included in the buffet price as well. Below are some pictures of the dishes that we ordered.

Sometimes they serve pickled vegetables (si chuan vegetables) as appetizers and you can get a plate of it at about $1.50 (got to pay for this, it's not included in the buffet).
I love the taste of their pickled vegetables, and it serves its purpose as an appetizer very well.

The dish featured in my top most picture is braised wild mushroom E-Fu noodles. You can order as many plates as you want as it's free flow smile The noodles were delicious and springy.

Although beverages are not included in the buffet, plain water is free flow. They have special rates for high tea and it's cheaper if you dine during lunch time. It'll be useful to call them up to check if they have credit card promotions too.

Recommended Dish(es):  I have tried almost all their cooked food items and find that all are of high quality.

Disappointing OK Apr 25, 2012

Categories : Cantonese/Hong Kong | Teochew | Dim Sum | Seafood

This is our first visit to Swatow Seafood Restaurant. As we were seated, the waitress gave us menus to browse through and told us there was a 1-for-1 promotion for shark's fin soup, two hot pots of shark's fin soup for the price of one, at S$38. She then recommended one of their popular dishes, 三脆,which means "three crunch". The dish consists of dried fish, french beans and brinjal fried with shrimps (虾米).

We ordered two pots of shark's fin soup, a plate of 三脆,and three dim sum dishes: siew mai, steamed pork ribs and chicken feet. For drinks, we had 八宝茶.

The three dim sum dishes arrived quickly, about one minute after we have placed our order. I have to say that I definitely have tasted better dim sum elsewhere and their dim sum did not live up to my expectations. I did not find prawn pieces in the siew mai, unlike the other siew mai served at other restaurants, and the chicken feet didn't taste fresh, so I was pretty disappointed.

The recommended 三脆 dish arrived next. I found the brinjal a tad salty, but the dish was still tasty.

As for the shark's fin soup, there were only two slices of shark's fin in the broth, so it looked a bit meagre. Perhaps they cut the portion down due to the 1-for-1 promotion? It still tasted good nevertheless.

I was prepared to be impressed by the cooked food, however unexpectedly, the 八宝茶 was what I liked the most. It was really fragrant, with red dates, chrysanthemum, rose buds and a few other herbs. We were given a big pot of hot water to refill our cups and the tea was so good, I had four cups. The tea costs S$3 per person, which I think is a reasonable price.

The food was not amazing, and the prices were not justified for such mediocre tasting dishes other than the 1-for-1 shark's fin promotion.

Dining in lush greenery Smile Apr 25, 2012

My colleague and I went to the restaurant "Greenhouse" because they had a 1-for-1 weekday lunch promotion. We were led to a table near the window which was overlooking the beautiful lush greenery outside. The cushioned seat was comfortable and the round table was sufficiently big for the two of us.

Here's an overview of the buffet spread:
- Salad Bar
- Cold cut section
- Warm food
- Soup section
- Bread & Cheese section
- Roast section
- Ice-cream section

The choices available for beverages were limited to ice water, hot coffee and tea, which will be ordered and served through the waiters.

The sashimi was pretty fresh so I had two plates of it.

However the cooked food was ordinary with regards to the variety and I wasn't that impressed. There were steamed fish, indian curry with naan, teriyaki chicken pieces and vegetables, just to name a few.

For the roast section, the chef sliced some roast duck and pork off for me on the spot. The roast duck was sweet and tender while the roast pork went well with the sauce.

The cold crabs were put out only after all the guests had their fill. I would presume it's the restaurant's strategy to not let the guests take too much of them. Since my stomach still had some space after tasting a bit of everything, I decided to try the cold crabs. When I was about to start eating, I saw a strand of hair entangled in my crab. I was disgusted and immediately showed it to the restaurant manager who hurriedly informed the restaurant's head chef. He came over to our table to apologize and offered to give us anything that we would like from the kitchen. As we were already quite bloated, I told him it's fine. Frankly speaking, I am reasonably pleased with the swift response to my complaint.

The head chef insisted on compensating us for their carelessness, so we gave in and ordered two glasses of orange juice. To my surprise, the orange juice was freshly squeezed!

I have to mention that their mango dessert was awesome. Take a look at my pictures to see the generous chunks of mangoes they gave!

Overall, I was pleased with their service. Used plates were cleared quickly and the food was replenished constantly.

Nice hotel nice food! Smile Apr 22, 2012

I went there for the Sunday Bruch (11.30am to 2.30pm) with my friend and were welcomed by the manager the moment we stepped into the restaurant.

The spread was extensive! Fresh oysters, salmon sashimi & tako were prepared on the spot. The oysters were so fresh I had four of them (each serving was 4 pieces of oyster). The cold crab legs were succulent and sweet too.

At a buffet, I don't normally eat food that can be found in hawker centres because it's a strategy to save some stomach space for the more luxurious food. However, knowing that their laksa is award winning, I ordered a bowl to see if it really lived up to its name. I was supposed to share it with my friend, but after tasting the first mouthful, i couldn't resist and finished the whole bowl by myself!

After a few rounds of food, I drifted to the desserts corner to check out the spread. We had durian penget (their specialty) and it felt like I was eating real durians! It was so good I devoured a few glasses of it. My friend had matcha ice-cream and she commented that it tasted like the one from haagen dazs!

For drinks, they have a coffee and tea making station where they serve teh tarik. The apple juice is also free flow.

I want to commend the live station cooking chef for his friendly and jovial customer service, which is rarely seen in other hotel buffet restaurants. Our used plates were also cleared very quickly. Overall, I was super pleased with the quality of the food and the awesome service.

I used DBS card on that day and was given 20 percent discount.
