It's not that often you see Middle Eastern food being cooked in a hawker centre. With reasonable prices around $5 per dish, I was definitely eager to see how Zafar Cafe measured up to the Middle Eastern cafes I usually go to in the Arab Street area.

I tried the shish kebab meat with rice and salad ($5). It was pretty good with yellow spiced rice and smokey grilled meat with some veggies on the skewer too. The garlicky aioli sauce on the side was pretty yummy too. The salad was just OK - the veggies were crisp but there wasn't much dressing.

They also serve dishes like hummus with pita bread and falafel balls. They don't always have the falafel, though.

It's pretty good for a hawker center and it's run by a really lovely Malay couple. It's pretty much the only place in the west to get Middle Eastern food, so check it out!

Yummy satay! Smile Oct 10, 2012

Categories : Singaporean | Hawker Centre

Satay is one of the must-haves when you're eating at Pasir Panjang! I was entertaining friends from overseas so ordered a big plate of chicken satay and rice cakes which were served still in the leaf wrapper.

It was one of the favorite dishes at the table - the sweet, smokey meat is so yummy it doesn't even need the peanut sauce. I did like the peanut sauce too but didn't taste the pineapple like another reviewer said it has? Service was good too and they brought the satay to our table quickly.

It was $8.50 for 15 pieces of satay and rice cakes.

Awesome char siew pao!  Smile Oct 09, 2012

Categories : Cantonese/Hong Kong | Hawker Centre | Dim Sum

Being in Chinatown always puts me in the mood for dim sum! This stall at the Chinatown Complex had a long queue, so I figured it had to be good.

For $2 I got 3 large char siew pao. They were SOOO much better than your average coffee shop pao. The outside was light and fluffy, not at all dense and gummy. The char siew inside was really flavourful - the perfect balance of spice and sweet. I also liked the accompanying chili sauce to dip the, in.

I'll definitely buy dim sum from here again - lots more, next time! smile smile

Perfect for airport breakfast Smile Oct 06, 2012

Categories : American | Coffee

I had an early flight with Tiger Airways and, now that the budget terminal is closed, this means I can start my day with Starbucks coffee at Terminal 2!

They had a breakfast special for $6.90 including a brewed coffee and your choice of a breakfast sandwich or a breakfast wrap. I got the breakfast sandwich with egg, cheese and chicken ham. The staff heated it up and even though it was unevenly warm - hot outside and cold in the middle - it was still good and a very filling breakfast. The price is very reasonable too considering the breakfast sandwiches are $5+ on their own.

Also, the staff do a very good job clearing the tables after people leave. It's a busy location, so this is important!

I just wish they took Starbucks cards at Changi!!

Singapore's coolest new cafe?  Smile Sep 25, 2012

Categories : Café

I'm a big fan of Papa Palheta's (they roast their own coffee beans), so when I heard they had a new full-service coffee bar I had to check it out.

Chye Seng Huat Hardware (yes, that's the name) is located in a really nondescript building along Tyrwhit Road. If you didn't know there was a coffee bar inside, you would easily walk right past.

Inside, it's been beautifully restored with high ceilings, a few tables, and a coffee bar that goes right around the barista preparation area. This means you get to watch them expertly preparing the coffee.

Coffee & financiers

I wanted a snack with my coffee, and noticed they had a set meal with baked goods and coffee. So for $10 I got a cup of the daily roast (regular coffee) and 5 raspberry financier cakes. The cakes were moist and not to sweet with the flavour of fresh raspberries - delicious! They're also perfect for sharing. My coffee was dark and rich, but it was quite a small serving for brewed coffee - I definitely could have drank a couple more!

I'd read that the cafe had developed quite a following, so I went on a Tuesday afternoon around 3pm hoping to avoid the crowds. All of the tables were full, but we were able to get 3 seats together at the coffee bar no problem. On weekends it's standing room only!

Definitely worth checking out if you like trendy cafes!
