Yummy & cheap! Smile Aug 22, 2012

I went to Pasir Panjang Food Centre for a late lunch around 3pm and all of the stalls I usually eat at were closed, so I decided to try this one.

I ordered rice with breaded pork cutlet and cabbage. It certainly wasn't a very pretty meal, but it tasted really good! The pork was crisp and well-seasoned, and would have been delicious even without the curry. The braised cabbage was really good too and practically melted in my mouth.

For $2.50 not only was it delicious but the portion was so big I couldn't finish it. What more could you ask for?

Underwhelming Cry Aug 22, 2012

Categories : Korean

This is a tiny Korean restaurant in the basement of the Central Mall at Clarke Quay. Nearly all the tables were full at 6:30pm on a Tuesday night, so I took that as a good sign.

I ordered the hotplate pork and my husband ordered the hotplate chicken, each cost $5.50. They gave you a number to put on your table, then you were supposed to self-serve soup and take a little plate with kimchi and anchovies to your seat. The tables are so tiny and close together that you're rubbing elbows with the people next to you.

The food was disappointing - rubbery meat, undercooked onions, under-seasoned. There was a bottle of hot sauce next to the cash register, so I put some of that on my pork to make it edible.

I definitely won't be back -- it was worse than hawker center Korean food and the ambiance was really unpleasant. It made you want to eat as quickly as possible then get out.

Mojitos!  Smile Aug 03, 2012

They're expensive, but Nueva Cuba makes the best mojito I have ever had in my life (and I've been to Cuba). Get the signature one - it comes in a jar with a stick of sugar cane. The sugar cane soaks up all the yummy rum and lime, and when you're done the drink you get to chew on it. They're a whopping $24 outside of happy hour, but you're hammered after 2 of these giant drinks! smile

I haven't tried the Cuban mains, but I have tried the tapas-sized dishes - sauteed chorizo in tomato sauce, stuffed mushrooms, etc. They were delicious, but portions were tiny. Between 4 of us we spent $60 on tapas and were still starving.

Ask for fresh food!  Cry Jul 25, 2012

I was hungry before a flight and Texas Fried Chicken caught my eye - seemed like the perfect innocuous food before traveling. I ordered the chicken strip set for a bit under $8 which included 3 chicken strips, fries, a biscuit, and a drink. Seems like a pretty good value for the airport.

I got the food immediately and went and sat down. I could tell just by looking at them that the fries were not fresh (they look gross in the photo!). I took a bite and they were cold and hard - completely inedible. I took a bite of the chicken strips and they were at least warm, but still definitely not hot.

Anyway, I decided to ask for new fries since they were so terrible. I went up to the counter and explained, and they told me to come back in 3 minutes. When I returned I had to explain myself all over again, but I did eventually get new fries that were much better.

I thought this was pretty good for fast food - I liked the spicy chicken strips with all-white meat (though wish there was some sauce for it!) and the sweet, buttery biscuit - but they really need to pay more attention to quality control - what they initially served me was inedible.

There aren't a lot of places to eat in my neighborhood (Pasir Panjang), so when an outlet of Fat Boy's Burger Bar opened up I knew I had to check it out.

The menu has a lot of really unique burger creations... Mexican burger with gucamole and chilis, an Elvis burger with bananas and peanut butter sauce, and the massive Fat Bastard burger.

After some time looking over the specialty menu, I went with the pork burger stuffed with bacon and topped with pineapple and caramelized onions. When it arrived it looked great! As usual, I put some ketchup on the first bite, but it was totally unnecessary - the burger was more delicious on its own. Even the bun was delicious - I think they bake their own. The fries were a bit lack-luster in terms of taste - they'd really benefit from some seasoning salt or something like that. I think thick-cut fries really need something like that so they don't taste bland.

Service was great too - really friendly and fast! Prices are a bargain compared to other burger joints like Brewerkz. Most of the specialty burgers are around $14 with fries.

There also seems to be a lunch special at the Pasir Panjang location which I'll check out sometime in the future.
