When I lived in Ghim Moh this was my favorite place for chicken rice. There are at least 3 chicken rice stalls at the hawker centre, but I'd always choose this one. I'd get the roasted version, which had crispy skin and moist, tender meat and costs $3.

My favorite thing about it was how nicely the hawker would slice it up. It was always boneless and mostly the white meat from the chicken breast - no chewy parts, just meat. He also puts a bit of oil on the chicken, which helps keep it from drying out, especially if you're getting it takeaway.

The chili is really yummy too - it has just the right amount of heat and isn't too sour.

Look for this chicken rice stall in the first line of stalls at Ghim Moh Hawker centre

I went to Halo after-work with a group of 6 colleagues. When I first saw this chill-out rooftop bar I immediately thought I'd be coming back here regularly , but the food and drinks were so disappointing I don't think I'd go back.

It was Thursday night and the drink special was mojitos. If you're going to specifically make a mojito promotion, you should probably ensure that the bartender knows how to make a mojito. 3 of us ordered a mojito as our first drink, but switched to house-pour and beer after. I have never been a bartender, but can certainly make a better mojito than what we had at Halo.

So then we started ordering finger foods... the fries were luke-warm and served without any dipping sauce and the crispy squid was so burnt that no one ate it. If the waiter had ever come to check how our table was doing, we would have sent them back. On the positive, the spring rolls were fine (store-bought) and the bread with chorizo was actually pretty yummy.

As mentioned, the service was completely indifferent. When a couple more people arrived and joined our group, no one bothered to come see if they wanted a drink - we had to spend minutes trying to get their attention. Same thing when we wanted new drinks. And this wasn't even on a busy night.

I (heart) Tea Leaf Salad!  Smile Jun 17, 2012

If you haven't eaten in the basement of Peninsula Plaza, you're missing out on the most authentic Burmese food outside of Myanmar! There are a few choices, but my favorite is Irrawaddy Restaurant which has the nicest ambiance and some of the best food.

I'm no expert on Burmese food, so I usually try a few new things every time I visit -- tofu fritters, mohinga noodle soup, Burmese pork curry. It's kind of like a fusion between Thai and Indian food and most dishes are pretty yummy. However, what keeps me coming back is the pickled tea leaf salad.

My boyfriend and I have tried to identify what goes into this dish and have concluded it contains peanuts, shrimp paste, tea leaves (duh), chili, and lime juice.. but that's probably only half of the ingredients. It's a rollercoaster of tastes and textures - highly recommended!

The prices are excellent too at around $4-8 for more dishes. They also do great value set meals, especially at weekday lunches. And, of course, they sell Myanmar lager smile

You probably won't fall in love with Burmese food, but it is a really unique dining experience.

OK food, careless service  OK Jun 17, 2012

My lunch at The Old Malaya Cafe wasn't great, but it was a refreshing alternative to the mall food court or chain restaurants - plus it was cheap.

I ordered the Melaka chicken rice balls (which I enjoy when I'm in Melaka) and, since every single person ahead of me in line ordered one, a popiah.

It was quite busy, but I managed to get a little table to myself. The chicken rice balls came quickly, within 5 minutes of me sitting down, and were fine -- tender chicken in soy sauce, 4 bland rice balls (they're more of a novelty than an improvement to rice, is my opinion). For $5, it was a generous enough portion and reasonably tasty.

I was pretty much done the chicken rice and my popiah still hadn't come. So when the staff would come into the dining area to bring people their food, I tried to get their attention and ask them. They did their best to ignore me. I finally got one lady's attention who was actually carrying a tray of popiah, and said I was still waiting for mine. She looked at my receipt and my number, and said these weren't my order... keep waiting!

Well, I waited another 10 minutes and it did not come. There were lots of people still coming in for lunch and my table was needed, and I felt bad enough having kept it for so long. So I got back in line where I ordered and when I got to the front told them I never got my popiah and showed them my receipt. They said something about having lost my order, and asked if I still wanted it! My table was long gone and I had other places to go, so they just refunded me my money.

Anyway, it seemed an honest mistake but the staff should have looked into it when I told them I'd been waiting for so long. There were a few other things on the menu I was curious to try so I'd probably go back, but would try to visit when it isn't so busy so hopefully the service will be better!

Just across from the Sultan Mosque, this is a cozy little Thai restaurant run by a family from Hat Yai.

While you'll find all the usual Thai favorites on the menu like phad thai, tom yam goong, and papaya salad, the real stand-outs are the Southern Thai dishes. Try the Hat Yai style fried chicken with sticky rice or the Massaman curry - my absolute favorite dish. Depending on the day, they make it with chicken or beef and it tastes like of like if a Thai cooked rendang curry - really rich, oily, coconutty, but extra spicy. And it's served with yellow rice and some kind of fruit chutney. Yum!

Best yet, prices are an incredibly good value. Most dishes designed to serve one person are about $5, or you can order a bigger size for sharing. There's no Singha beer since it's Halal, but they do sweet Thai iced tea and lemongrass juice.
