Punggol East Gem Smile Nov 19, 2012
Categories : Singaporean Chinese | Restaurant | Seafood | Zi Char

We were invited by OpenRice for this food tasting session at Uncle Leong Seafood last Saturday. It was our first time here. What a surprise to find a cluster of eating places behind Riviera LRT (PE4) station. Among them Uncle Leong Seafood Restaurant is hidden behind a Billiard Room and along the jogging track of Punggol East waterway. There is a prawning pond beside it.

Ambience

As we enter the Restaurant, you will notice there is a lots of huge crabs shells decorated around the place. It has an air-con section and a second door led to a covered outdoor patio which overlook the jogging track of Punggol.

Golden Beancurd

Golden Beancurd

The tofu was a combination of seafood and beancurd lightly pan fried to golden brown. The texture is soft and suitable for both children and elderly folks. It look like pieces of gold bar which is Auspicious to order during Chinese New Year. To me the taste of this dish is average and dipping the tofu into the plum sauce greatly enhanced it.

Chineses Spinach with Eggs

Chineses Spinach with Eggs

The Spinach is cooked with 3 types of Eggs. The chicken Egg helps to thicken and gives a smooth gravy. The Salted egg and Century Egg gives it a contrasting taste and texture. It has crispy Anchovies sprinkle on top for added dimension.

Fortune Chicken

Fortune Chicken

A whole spring chicken is used for this dish cooked in Chinese Herb. It has a light herb taste with lots of gravy cooked with mushroom and fish maw.

Chye Poh Steam Fish

Chye Poh Steam Fish

The Steam Red Garoupa with Chye Poh (Preserved Vegetables) has a light Soya Sauce and sprinkle with light golden brown crunchy chye poh. This dish could be improved if more ginger is used when steaming the fish. This will help get rid of the slightly fishing taste.

Guinnnes Pork Ribs

Guinnnes Pork Ribs

The pan-fried pork ribs is tender and nicely fried with a thin batter coating. Then a yummy liquid black gold sauce made from Guinness Stout coats the pork ribs. This is one of the best Guinness Pork Ribs that I have tasted.

Claypot Crab Bee Hoon Soup

Claypot Crab Bee Hoon Soup

This dishes looks like a relaxing crab sitting in a Sauna Bath with it claws up in the air. It look pretty impressive and the taste matches it. This Claypot Crab Bee Hoon Soup has a sweet and tasty broth made from the crab and served with thick Bee Hoon. It can be a meal by itself.

Shimmering Sand Crab Delight

Shimmering Sand Crab Delight

Their Signature Crab is the Shimmering Sand Crab Delight. It is a light creamy sauce made of butter, white pepper and curry leaves. It is sprinkle with oats which gives it a sandy look. This is the owner Uncle Leong's creation. I like that the sauce is not a heavy based cream and the curry leaves and oat add a nice touch to the dish.

Yam Paste and Longan Sea Coconut

Yam Paste and Longan Sea Coconut

We were served with 2 types of desserts. Yam Paste with Gingko and Longan with Sea Coconut. I found the Yam Paste too sweet, especially the coconut milk.

Service
The service could be improved if they provide finger bowls when serving crabs dishes instead of just wet tissue. They should change plates for each customer half way during the meals and not at the end of the meals.

Overall their Signature and Recommended dishes are very well cooked and executed but the other dishes we tasted were average to me. They seem to specialized in Crab dishes. I noticed one of the table nearby ordering Black Pepper Crab which looks very good. Even the boss son Jeff mentioned they do a very good Chili Crab. He was attentive and receptivity to our comments and suggestion for improvement.

As a suggestion for more business, they could create a Special Crab Banquet Menu with their Signature Crab dish and other dishes using crab meat at Reasonable Price . I am sure it will be popular with those Crab lovers in Singapore.

We enjoyed the food very much that we ordered Fried Mee Sua and Guinness Pork Rib as takeaway for our parents to try. We paid for our takeaway.

Thanks to the Generousity of Uncle Leong and OpenRice, I found another Seafood Place where I can take my family and overseas visitors.

Value for Money Set Lunch Smile Nov 15, 2012

Categories : French | Restaurant

This is one of the restaurant that I have wanted to try for a long time. A good opportunit presented itself when it was part of the dinning week Restaurant. I managed to secure a lunch booking when they open up the BMW day for public to booked.
RW Menu

RW Menu

At $25++ for lunch, it was value for lunch with a choice of Appetizer and Mains. It even serve coffee or tea not like some places where we had to order expensive mineral water. This places even provide free plain water. Thumb up lol

The ambience is more of a bistro as the name suggested, so do not go expecting it as high end Restaurant standard. Normal day prices are reasonable with the portion size they served. The place is decorated like a cafe with simple table and chair. Food is better than Delifrance.

As there were 4 of us, we get to try the 2 different Appertizer and the 2 different Mains.
Butter and Bread Roll

Butter and Bread Roll

Complimentary bread roll and butter was served while we wait for our 1st course.
Salmon & Cod Fish Terrine

Salmon & Cod Fish Terrine

The salmon and cod terrain has a pink and white combinations sitting on top a herbed tartar sauce. The taste of fish is not fishing when eaten with the creamy white sauce. It comes with a side of salad.
Snails baked Herbed Garlic

Snails baked Herbed Garlic

I prefer my choice of baked Escargot in herb. It came piping hot in a special escargot plate which has hole for the little snail. It was covered with lots of herbs that look like hot green moss. The snails were chewy and the melted hot butter herb combinations, make this appertizer a pleasure to eat.
Halibut Steak with Pilaf Rice in White Sauce

Halibut Steak with Pilaf Rice in White Sauce

Sis ordered the Halibut Steak with Pilaf rice. The tasty and fluffy rice was served in a mini red pot and a huge portion of lightly pan fried fish to go with it. I like the slight crisp of the fish except that I find the fish too bony.
Crispy Roast Pork Belly

Crispy Roast Pork Belly

The rest of us ordered Crispy Roast Pork Belly which we get a slice. It may look small but was filling for me as it came with creamy and smooth mashed potatoe. The pork was crispy and meat very tender. I really enjoy this dish.
Opera Cake

Opera Cake

For dessert it was the yummy Opera Cake. Cake was decent even though it was simply decorated with a pocky stick.

Categories : Bakery | Brunch

This is the 1st Time we are ordering from them. We decided to order the Mini pies options as we can choose 2 flavours. We picked the Dad's Home Classic Chicken and Dad's Chilli Pie Chicken extra spicy. We also ordered the large Chicken Country Captain. Since the total cost is above $50, we do not have to pay the $5 delivery fee.
Mini Chicken Pies $$26

Mini Chicken Pies $$26

The Shepherd's Pie comes in 3 different sizes; Standard Tray of 8"x 8" x 2", Set of 6 Mini tray 3"x 5" x 1.5" & 15 party cup of 2.5" x 2". The prices are $24.90, $$26 & $28 respectively.

It comes in 4 different flavours and either in chicken or beef. They are Homemade Classic, Oriental Chicken, Black Pepper Pie, Chilli Pie. Note that only Oriental is available in Chicken.

Homemade Classic
The minced meat with slice button mushroom is cooked with herbs, light tomato based gravy topped with smooth creamy mashed potato and pumpkin. This is non spicy.

Oriental Chicken
This minced chicken is cooked in Oriental Sauce and served with the same potato and pumpkin mash,

Black Pepper Pie
This comes wit either chicken or beef minced with black pepper sauce.

Chilli Pie
This has 2 levels of spiciness. We ordered the more spicy no 2 chicken. The filling has the chilli kick and comes with the same smooth potatoe and pumpkin mash that was lightly browned.
Large Chicken Country Captain $27.

Large Chicken Country Captain $27.

Chicken Curry Captain
This is a mild curry made of chicken wings, drumlets, potato and sausage. The curry gravy is thick and a drier version. A small portions cost $15 is for 3-4 pax and the large portion at $27 is enough for 6 to 8 persons. The family enjoy this non spicy curry which you can eat with bread or rice. As we are fan of curry potato, wish it had more curry potato chunks.

They also sells Oven Grilled Chicken Wings at $4.80 for 3 pieces and 6 pieces at $8.90. For some green, you can order Garden Salad at $3.50.

The delivery service was prompt. We requested for delivery between 5 - 6 pm. They arrive just before 5pm and the food was still warm.

If you cannot decide what to order, you can always select one of the combo meal ranging from $29.90 to $59.90. Note Yishun area only pay $2 for delivery for order below $50. This is a great option for party.

Tantalizing Thai Smile Jul 06, 2012

Categories : Thai

This place always has a queue during meal times. The wait is not too long as they have a system. You can queue at the side of the shop and a waitress will take your order. When a table is available for the number of people you required, you will be led to the table. A wait of about 5 mins and your order will start to arrive on the table.

Ambience
The place has indoor and outdoor sitting. The place is simply decorated with a counter that has a Thai Style roof. This act as a cashier as well as a dessert counter. Simple wooden table and wooden chair inside the shop. It is more like a cafe.
Tom Yum Soup

Tom Yum Soup

Tom Yum Soup.
I love the spicy and sour taste in this clear broth. It has mushroom, prawns, & squids. It cost $6 and is enough for 4 person.
Crispy Fish with Thai Chili Sauce

Crispy Fish with Thai Chilli Sauce.
The fish is fried until very crispy untill the bones can be eaten. The Thai Chilli Sauce is sweet and not very hot. The fish is of decent size and is crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. It is really cheap at $22. Highly Recommended.
Red Curry

Red Curry

Red Curry Chicken.
They serve the usual Thai curry like Green, Red and Massaman Curry. We ordered the red curry Chicken which is slightly spicy and has cut chilli and Kaffir leaf. The yummy curry gravy encourages you to eat more rice.
Green Fanta

Green Fanta

Drink.
They serve mainly bottle drink like different colour Fanta drink, Thai Soya Milk as well as Thai Ice Tea. The Fanta drink are small bottle like those in Thailand.

Overall
The food is very tasty and prices are very reasonable even for seafood. It is one of my favorite casual Thai Cafe.

Upmarket Sushi Smile Jun 15, 2012
Categories : Japanese | Sushi/Sashimi

This is one of the newer Japaneses Restaurant in Changi Airport T3. It sells upmarket Sushi, Sashimi, Hand Rolls, Tempura Udon, Tonkatsu Don etc.

We order a mixed of sushi, noodles and rice bowl to try.
Curry Prawn Sushi

Curry Prawn Sushi

I ordered the Tempura Prawn with curry which has nice crunchy prawn coated in batter with mild curry powder for you to dipped your sushi. The Roasted Egg with Lobster is one of my favourite , you actually get cubes of lobster meat coated in curry sauce stuffed between egg omelette. When you bite into this combination, the egg is soft and the lobster has a nice bit and the curry sauce is not spicy.

We also ordered smoked duck sushi and tofu with crab meat sauce. The tofu dish was a bit plain, it has fish roe and crab meat which is better if you bit it together with the tofu.
Roasted Egg with Curry Lobster

Roasted Egg with Curry Lobster

This place sells upmarket Sushi with different type of fish, for example a piece of Roasted Blue Fin Fatty Tuna at $7.50 each. To try assorted sushi, you can get the Natsu Sushi set at $30.90. You can get cheaper sushi such as Spicy Salmon at $1 each.
Tempura Udon

Tempura Udon

Mum order the Tempura Udon which comes with a bowl of pipping hot udon and a separate plate of Tempura consisting of 2 crispy battered prawns, egg plants and mushroom.
Tonkatsu Don

Tonkatsu Don

The Tonkatsu Don and Grilled Eel with Scrambled Egg is similar except the topping is different. The Tonkatsu has pork cutlet while the latter is Grilled Eel. The dish is tasty but too much sauce topping were added making it too salty even though I eat it with rice.
